Can I wear this to a wedding?

Can I wear something like this to a wedding (with heels)? I suit slightly 50s styles and this colour, and I'd like sleeves (it's an autumn wedding, and a Catholic one). Is it too teacher like?
And any idea for accessories?

Oh, never wear bright red and black together, you will look like a 1980s radio as a friend once memorably put it.

So memorable yet I've no idea what she's talking about. There's no reason not to wear red and black together.

Red and black together makes me think of Paloma Picasso.

Those radios must have made zero impression on me. I don''t recall ever seeing them.

Op the first one is way better than the polka dot etsy one, I think with heels, make up, hair, you can get away with it.

Holandcleo · 22/07/2024 11:04

Work or casual. Not wedding. Definitely. I don’t think any amount of dressing it up or accessories would change that.

Grammarnut · 22/07/2024 18:04

It's attractive but more work than wedding. Even if you dress it up it will not be formal enough.

GoldFrame · 22/07/2024 22:48

Just go to a shop and buy a dress that’s actually suitable for a wedding. Preferably not in scarlet

The original dress is suitable for a wedding. Being smart but not glamorous doesn't make it unsuitable.

And red is fine. Nobody in the least bit sensible will object to a woman wearing red.

BluntPlayer · 23/07/2024 00:23

Nice but too plain Jane😶

Totally agree. The original dress wouldn't have looked out of place at the wedding I was at on Saturday. Totally agree about red or even "scarlet"

Mate, come on. You can't wear an elasticated polyester shirt dress to a wedding.

This.

I wouldn't think twice wearing that to Tesco.

Boring & bland. Just looks like you've made minimum effort if you wore that to a wedding! (Sorry, you did ask)

Try quiz or oh Polly OP, they have lovely dresses!

Each to their own but given the choice between the OP's plain and completely appropriate if she doesn't want to stand out dress and the horrible , in my opinion , dresses on these sites, OP's choice beats these by miles. There are horrendous dresses on these sites.

Agree actually, I opened the oh polly website and most dresses seem to have ridiculous cuts in random places, or show the belly button, or be covered in sequins...I'm going to a day wedding and I think I'd rather wear something a bit more plain than stand out for the wrong reasons!

Too casual. Maybe this?

Holandcleo, I am with you on this one. Lovely dress but nothing can be done to make it fit for a wedding.
Look on the bright side though, it’s a good excuse for poster to treat herself to another outfit that WILL be appropriate. Win, win!

Educator66 · 24/07/2024 13:33

If it is clean and smart then wear whatever you feel comfortable in - it is for someone's wedding so your best contribution is to be happy for everyone - not walk around worried if you have dressed correctly

BorisJohnsonsWigGlue · 24/07/2024 14:44

There's actually plenty of gorgeous dresses on Oh Polly, if you actually shop by occasion and click wedding, that don't look matronly / casual down wear, that also don't have lots of cut outs in the fabric.

www.ohpolly.com/collections/dresses-wedding-guest-dresses-7cf056

It's always better to be over dressed than under dressed IMO!

Like PP, I agree that no amount of accessories and make up will dress the OP's dress up. I would happily wear that now, working from home in front of a laptop

SwimmingintheSeine · 24/07/2024 14:53

I think yes definitely, with the right accessories, heels, statement jewellery etc. I don't think too casual at all.

Each to their own etc, etc but those drrsses are awful.

I think the opposite. As long as I'm not scruffy then I'd always feel more self-conscious being over-dressed than under-dressed. Under-dressed stands out far less.

Agreed. It's said often enough on here that the guests shouldn't try to upstage the bride. The OP's choice is a plain, inoffensive dress which is fine. If any are inappropriate it's the dresses on that Oh Polly link .
