Can I wear this to a wedding?

Can I wear something like this to a wedding (with heels)? I suit slightly 50s styles and this colour, and I'd like sleeves (it's an autumn wedding, and a Catholic one). Is it too teacher like?
And any idea for accessories?

Bit boring and casual for a wedding. How about something like this & it's also available red:

For the posters who are decrying polyester that dress is polyester too. It's not nicer than the OP's choice for a lot more money.

I don't know anything at all about fashion or which materials are better. I just think it's a really pretty dress, but can totally accept that for someone who knows a lot more about these things than I do, it may not be good value for money!

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/07/2024 09:33

Mate, come on. You can't wear an elasticated polyester shirt dress to a wedding.

AhBiscuits · 21/07/2024 10:14

I think it's too casual too. I'd throw this on for work, and we have no dress code and half the office are in jeans.

thehappyotter · 21/07/2024 10:49

i love it ! heals and a nice hand bag and your hair done will glam it up .
if it suits you and makes you feel good - go for it .You can always get your hair done with a facinater to make it look more formal.

Edited

i like it ! anything can be glammed up with hair and make up . Pair of heals and a handbag.
unless of course they have a black tie theme , last wedding i went to was outside and we were sat on hay bails .
I guess it depends on it the couple are wanting it formal ? most say on invites . i was far too dressed up for the last wedding !

And to be honest I did think to myself that I can keep it to wear to the office after the wedding 😅

great idea , why waste money ? at least you can wear it again . heals matching handbag .
sometimes the most simple dresses look the best .
i would make a big effort with my hair .
job done 😀

To use that overused MN cliché no one would have batted an eyelid at that dress at the wedding I was at yesterday.

It's fine. It's not dressed up glam but it's perfectly smart. And much more appropriate for a church than many of the things people do wear for weddings.

You don't have to be wearing something that looks like an evening dress to count as appropriate. Casual is better than nightclub

i agree , and you want to be at ease . All the other dresses she picked seem similar so i think she should dress up the first one . i wouldnt of been offended at all if she turned up to mine in it.
not a fan or all this satin floral looks personally ,but each to their own.

Yes, although I think it's possible to find a dress that's a bit more formal, but also can be dressed down for work. I definitely don't agree with the idea of buying an expensive dress just for a special occasion that you can maybe never wear again.
I think it's probably easier to dress up and down the same dress with summer dresses than autumn dresses though.

urbanbuddha · 21/07/2024 12:29

almost free and very wedding-y

Given the choice of only the OP's dress or that one, the OP's choice is a gazillion times nicer. If that dress were the only option I'd stay at home. Each to their own, it's all subjective ,etc etc but that is awful.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/07/2024 12:50

There is nothing wrong with the colour and shape per se, but it needs to be longer and fuller in the skirt and not polyester elastane which is not a forgiving fabric at the best of times. I suspect it will look pretty cheap in real life.

I find with wedding/parry wear if you want it to be multi wear it is easier dress something nicer down than try and dress something cheap or too casual looking up.

blackcherryconserve · 21/07/2024 13:26

No it's not dressy enough for a wedding unless you wear it with s fancy hat, jewellery and high heels lol

SkySmiler · 21/07/2024 16:43

Too causal

Sussurations · 21/07/2024 17:05

The Pretty Dress Company one linked upthread is very nice, although not hugely versatile. in general it’s a mistake to get a really ‘weddingy’ dress as a guest, unless you know you have several things lined up to wear it for, or you will sell it afterwards - thinking of which, you could try EBay. I got a lovely unworn Hobbs dress in an only slightly dated style for £15 to wear to a wedding recently. I needed something specific for the wedding ‘theme’ and really didn’t want to spend much. Hobbs and LK Bennett are great labels to search for and they both do quite a lot of 50s-ish styles.

Priekebejen · 21/07/2024 17:27

It’s lovely, although I agree a little plain for a wedding. Perhaps a hat/fascinator in the same colour. Definitely need a clutch and heels too.

The Pretty Dress Company dress is an ordinary, everyday dress, as is the OP's original choice, but both of them could be worn to a wedding. I don't much like either of them but neither of them would have looked out of place at the wedding I was at yesterday.

I don't however see anything which justifies the difference in price between them.

RuthW · 21/07/2024 18:07

Bit casual for a wedding (more office wear) but with your fascinator or hat and buttonhole it would prob be ok

I wouldn’t spend £150 on polyester either, but it’s not an everyday dress - even in black it’s not office wear. I agree that both dresses are perfectly fine for a wedding.

I think were talking about different dresses. I meant this one. There is another one which is far more dressed up. I don't think either of them are worth £159

I think it could work with either black or strong contrasting colour stilettos and fascinator.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/07/2024 06:27

Not a fascinator. They're awful anyway but on such a plain dress will just look silly.

GoldFrame · 22/07/2024 07:41

Black would look awful with it too
