Littlewoods and Kays catalogues. It was very exciting when the White Arrow van came 😁

HolidayAtNight · 11/07/2024 21:39

Adams! I haven't thought about that shop in years. Also, when I was a bit older, Tammy Girl, which seemed very glamorous. Although maybe I just wanted stuff from there, can't remember if I got it or not!

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 11/07/2024 21:40

Next catalogue and St Michael's (Old Marks and Spencers)

And a local second hand clothes swap.

Catnipcupcakes · 11/07/2024 21:41

Littlewoods catalogue (1970’s).

There was a clothes chop called ‘Bambers’ that I was once lucky enough to be bought a wool skirt from once. It was amazing.

BingoMarieHeeler · 11/07/2024 21:42

Freemans catalogue and charity shops I think. Then as a teen the usual high st stuff, mainly New Look. My mum LOVES shopping and doubly loves a bargain so a charity shop is her dream.

My friend always got the Next catalogue (hard back!!) and was allowed to write Xs next to things she wanted. Was jel!

keylimedog · 11/07/2024 21:43

New Look! I used to love it 😂 river island or top shop for cool clothes.

When I was little it was anything Boden / Barbour / hand knitted 😂

WindowViper · 11/07/2024 21:45

Cloth Kits and Oxfam mostly.

Mumof1andacat · 11/07/2024 21:46

Comedycook · 11/07/2024 21:46

When I was older, Tammy girl and The one and only at BHS.

Mairzydotes · 11/07/2024 21:47

Marksies. Edited it because I don't like how it highlights their name.

C & A

JustPleachy · 11/07/2024 21:48

M&S, BHS, C&A, Littlewoods catalog 😀

Runnerinthenight · 11/07/2024 21:48

Catalogues and small drapery stores that did kid's clothes.

I was very trendy as a child, looking back! I'd white patent boots in the 60s, and red hotpants when they were all the rage!

Changingplace · 11/07/2024 21:49

Mostly bags of clothes that were passed around between my aunties and my mums friends of stuff other kids had grown out of, and then passed back around once we grew out of them - I don’t think I really had a lot of ‘new’ clothes except school uniform & pjs/underwear.

AstonMartha · 11/07/2024 21:49

Everything was either handmade and/or handed down (multiple times!). I hated it.

mnahmnah · 11/07/2024 21:50

M&S and a children’s wear boutique in the local high street

NorthernMouse · 11/07/2024 21:51

Jumble sales

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 11/07/2024 21:51

Car boot sales and church jumble sales.

MigGirl · 11/07/2024 21:52

I remember shopping in places like Marks and Spencers, John Lewis, wollworths and Materlan (but you had to have your own business in those days to shop in Materlan).

As a teen, we shopped in top shop, New Look and Next oh and river island.

I think my mum did get the Littlewoods catalogue as well but more for toys and presents.

AuschwitzHistorian · 11/07/2024 21:52

What Every Woman Wants, Grattan, Empire, Kay’s and Littlewoods catalogues. Like a PP I remember the white arrow van.

C and A

Cheap discount shoe shops.

Second hand when I was very young.

MigGirl · 11/07/2024 21:54

I actually I should say a lot of my clothes where hand me downs from my sister. So often my mum bought good stuff for her and kept it for me. I did get some new stuff but not as much as she did.

cortex10 · 11/07/2024 21:54

C&A for 'best', market stall and jumble sales

RosesAndHellebores · 11/07/2024 21:55

M&S, Ladybird before it became part of Woolies, D H Evans which had a fabulous children's department and some independent local shops. there were also hand knitted cardigans.

I remember a red cardigan, to hip length with cable stitch (fine) at the front and brass buttons. I loved that cardigan. Also swimsuits with a row of buttons and piping at the front and a white nylon pleated skirt. Everyone had one and they came in lots of colours.

1960s/v early 70s.

DelphiniumBlue · 11/07/2024 21:55

Selfridges, M&S, or a boutique in Carnaby Street called Kids in Gear. There was also a shop in Hampstead I had some very trendy clothes from , but my mum made a lot of my clothes herself.
