Got taken to c & A in Nottingham, a day out about twice a year, lived in Lincoln, about 3 outfits each time, the rest I don’t remember, probably m and s.
Prob mid 60s to 70s, I’m 62

Great Universal catalogue, we lived very rurally so twice a year we would go to a city and get things from C and A, BHS and M & S. There was a small independent department store in a market town about 10 miles away where we bought things inbetween.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 11/07/2024 22:00

Charity shops and jumble sales. Mum wasn't political but she said the local Conservative group's jumble sales had the best quality stuff!

Evenstar · 11/07/2024 22:02

Ladybird clothes from Woolworths too.

chattyness · 11/07/2024 22:02

Bit of a mixture really, I got a lot of hand me downs from two older sisters and an aunty, some granny hand knits and crocheted clothes and then the rest were bought from jumble sales ,charity shops, market stalls, Marshall ward's catalogue, occasional clothes party and we had a black bag lady that used to come round once a month with all kinds of stuff so we could have a root through that too.

Ruelzdontapply · 11/07/2024 22:04

Charity shops
Hand me downs from my older cousin

When I was a teen
New look and the market

Lotsofsnacks · 11/07/2024 22:08

Great Universal catalogue, local market or boutiques, C&A, M&S. As a teen; Chelsea Girl, clockhouse, Topshop :)

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/07/2024 22:09

School uniforms from John Lewis, or Goldbergs ( remember them, Edinburgh people), shoes from Clarks. She made quite a few too.

unsync · 11/07/2024 22:10

Hand me downs, home made, jumble sale and school uniform from the PTA uniform shop. The only new stuff we got was underwear, swim kit and shoes. My mother worked too, which was unusual for where we lived. I can remember her knitting and also unravelling jumpers when we grew out of them, so they could be reknitted into something else.

Lotsofsnacks · 11/07/2024 22:13

And shoes from Freeman, Hardy, Willis and Curtess’s!

Merrilydancing · 11/07/2024 22:16

We lived rurally so mostly from Kays catalogue but every once in a while we went to the city and then it was C&A, what everyone wants and goldbergs.

AliceMcK · 11/07/2024 22:16

Market stalls
Local imported ethnic minority shops along the lane that sold a mix of cheap clothes, pots and pans, spices etc
Ethel Austin
Catalogue for fancy.

A fancy boutique shop for extra fancy. My mother would secretly put things on layby then try passing them off as bargains she picked up from the market to my Dad.

Princessfluffy · 11/07/2024 22:18

A Large Suitcase of clothes sent over twice a year from the USA full of clothes my cousins had outgrown. These clothes were REALLY COOL and much more fun than anything sold in the UK at that time.

They originally came from US catalogues.

purpleme12 · 11/07/2024 22:19

Tammy Girl
C&A
Adams
At least they're the ones I remember anyway

Anunymus · 11/07/2024 22:21

Ladybird in Woolies.
Marks.
John Lewis.

But mostly hand me downs from my siblings.

Scissorsisters · 11/07/2024 22:22

C&A a couple of times a year
M&S for basics and school uniform
The local 'dress exchange'
And we could all sew and made our own stuff, choosing patterns and fabric in the local shop or John Lewis

Mum had a Grattan catalogue but I don't remember getting anything from it.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 11/07/2024 22:23

Mothercare and M&S
when I was a teen I shopped at Tammy Gurl and Snob

Twoshoesnewshoes · 11/07/2024 22:23

Oh and C&A

ThePoshUns · 11/07/2024 22:24

Kay's catalogue, BHS, C&A

Mrsjayy · 11/07/2024 22:26

From cousins and the catalogue I think it was great universal I'd get birthday and Christmas clothes.

goingdownfighting · 11/07/2024 22:26

Pollards

theeyeofdoe · 11/07/2024 22:26

I remember shopping in C&A, Debenhams, Tammy Girl, Etam. Then miss Selfridge and Top Shop when older.
Dorothy Perkins too.

Pleaseleavemealone0 · 11/07/2024 22:26

Bhs, c&a, tammy girl. But mostly hand me downs.

Mrsjayy · 11/07/2024 22:27

As a teenager. It would have been C&A and whatevery woman wants. It was the primark of the 80s and 90s.

Boating123 · 11/07/2024 22:29

Tammy girl, C&A, BHS and M&S.
