New clothes? Unheard off when I was growing up :)

We got new undies, socks and pyjamas at Christmas and new shoes from Freeman Hardy and Willis come September

Clothes were home made, came from a jumble sale, or passed along from friends, family and neighbours

butwhatabouttheroses · 11/07/2024 22:32

Jumble sales and hand me downs from my cousins. I remember getting my first brand new outfit. It came from Dash in Debenhams and I felt so fancy! I think I was about 12

Littleguggi · 11/07/2024 22:34

Yes catalogues
Local footwear shop that also sold clothes
Mark one (I think it was called)

Nellieinthebarn · 11/07/2024 22:34

Homemade, 4 dresses a year for school, 2 for summer 2 for Winter, 2 cardigans home knitted. Hand me downs from cousins. Jumble sales. I do remember getting a new duffle coat for school, it was bought big and worn until too small, so I had it for about 3 years. Socks and knickers were from Woolworths, shoes were from Clarks, again 2 pairs a year for school. At home I wore wellies or plimsolls, depending on the season. Style wasn't a thing for kids when I was one, not where we lived anyway.

Freeman's catalogue
Co-op department store
As young teen C&A and M and Spencer

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/07/2024 22:35

We had 'Ladybird ' or home made clothes.

stringbean · 11/07/2024 22:38

Mostly homemade, including school skirts/tunics, party dresses and nightdresses, knitted guernsey jumpers. Shop bought eg jeans came from M&S and occasionally John Lewis when I was a bit older. My grandmother lived in Yorkshire and had some great markets nearby which did all sorts - remember buying some lovely summer shirts there and there was a stall which did M&S seconds so our school jumpers were always bought there. School shoes came from an independent shop - I had huge feet so they only ever had one style/colour in my size, no choice. I hankered after Benetton in the 80s - it was the height of European chic as far as I was concerned - but never had the money to buy anything there.

LemonySnickets · 11/07/2024 22:39

Kay's and littlewoods catalogue. Never ever knew of her to buy us stuff from a clothes shop.

Friendofdennis · 11/07/2024 22:40

Laura Ashley ( factory sales in Cardiff) Howells Cardiff, Top Shop, C and A and handmade by mum

Judd · 11/07/2024 22:42

Ethel Austin. There wasn't a changing room so my mum would push us into the middle of the clothing rails and make us try on there!

Evenstar · 11/07/2024 22:42

My DM did make a few dresses for me, and I can remember some hand knitted jumpers made by DGM and aunts. My clothes were always passed on to my cousins, I had a few items passed on to me by an older cousin on my dad’s side.

newrubylane · 11/07/2024 22:44

My mum worked in BHS so that was basically where everything I owned came from until about age 11.

C&A a couple of times a year
M&S for basics and school uniform
The local 'dress exchange'
And we could all sew and made our own stuff, choosing patterns and fabric in the local shop or John Lewis

Mum had a Grattan catalogue but I don't remember getting anything from it.

My mum variously had Kays, John Noble, Great Universal, Littlewoods and Grattans, that I remember!

BlueSoul · 11/07/2024 22:47

M&S, Tammy Girl and some independent children's clothes shops. The Sweater shop! We went to America a few times and would get loads of clothes from shops at Florida Mall! In teenage years Miss Selfridge, Topshop!

supercatlady · 11/07/2024 22:47

Mum made a lot of ours - or we got them from jumble sales or had hand me downs. Occasionally we would get something from Ladybird at Woolworths but I think that was a gift from grandparents.

AzureAnt · 11/07/2024 22:48

My mother was a professional seamstress so made all the clothes for the whole family. Even my dad's work jeans. Coats, jackets, even sleeping bags for our camping trips. Occasionally after helping at the church jumble sales she would bring stuff home

Motherrr · 11/07/2024 22:50

Jumble sales, lots of hand me downs, and the odd nice posher things from gap/benneton

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 11/07/2024 22:50

The market in town, C&A (but only in the January sales) and my mum would make tops and jumpers for us.
Mothercare for longer than I wanted to.

Summertimer · 11/07/2024 22:51

M and S, John Lewis and local shops and department stores

bellsbuss · 11/07/2024 22:52

Kay's catalogue and C & A

mrsmacmc · 11/07/2024 22:53

Grattan catalogue / M&Co / M&S for school uniform and undies

gingercat02 · 11/07/2024 22:53

Wow, that's a question. As little kids, Dunnes, Premark (Ireland never Prymark) M&S, Woollies.
As a teen River Island, Tammy, Chelsea Girl, Top Shop mainly.

soundsys · 11/07/2024 22:55

Asda, C&A, M&Co

And when I was old enough to have a day Tammy Girl 😁

Talipesmum · 11/07/2024 22:55

Lots of hand me downs (my favourite! We had some nice ones and I liked the people passing them down)
C&A
Ethel Austin and Ladybird when we were little
Dash, Benetton (fancy)
And a fancy party cool outfit from tammy girl.
Probably M&S as well, not sure.
