Isn't it such a cliche though that the men wear red ties and the women red dresses?

(Or blue, or green, or yellow.)

It would be a refreshing change to see politicians' wives buck this silly trend of displaying their loyalty by the colour of their dresses.

Can you imagine if she turned up in a blue dress on the day her husband was elected?

The media would have a field day.

I thought AM dress was possibly a nod to Labour getting in for 5 years then Tories making as come back 🤣

BobnLen · 06/07/2024 10:53

The dress was £275, many women would spend that on a dress for a special occasion, which it was.

Maybe she should have bought a bench instead...

She probably had it gifted

beatrix1234 · 06/07/2024 11:20

I don't remember the people speculating on Theresa Mays husband clothes or how well dressed he looked... and that's because the way a PM husband looks or dresses doesn't matter or is not important. When the PM spouse is a woman the way she dresses and looks is all that matters, she will be scrutinised by the press and the people constantly. The patriarchy really did a number on us.

TimeandMotion · 06/07/2024 11:21

Displaying loyalty by the colour of your clothes is hardly “a silly trend”!

there is absolutely no way someone in that position would accept a gift.

I think you’re confusing her with an influencer

NashvilleQueen · 06/07/2024 11:27

But it's not just a 'what do we think of the dresses' thread tho is it? Within a few posts it's about whether it's more or less than she should be wearing based on her or her husband's assumed wealth. Sticking it in S&B doesn't change that some people here are furious about a Labour government, don't like the PM and by default anyone associated with them.

There were two women supporting their husbands yesterday. They aren't the story. What their husbands did/do with the power they have been given is the issue. Comment on the dresses all you like but all this 'Lady Starmer' bollocks is ridiculous. She's not an aristocrat.

Lady Victoria is her title according to the Official Rules. But it's a bollocks rule that the wife of a knight gets a title but the husband of a dame doesn't.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 06/07/2024 11:46

Is that the same land he bought his mum so she could keep donkeys from a donkey sanctuary there?

what an utter bastard he was doing that.🤔priced out all the locals.

hmmm I’m not sure it’s that simple. If the pm’s husband was dressed in scruffy dirty clothes, or a bright red (/other party colour) suit, that would get commented on. The reason men’s clothes get commented on less is largely because they’re generally dull and uniform. However, Jeremy corbyn’s and Boris Johnson’s clothes and appearances were discussed at great length on the media and by the public.

it’s an interesting question how and why women in our culture are the ones who society expects to dress up and wear make-up and be colourful, while men are. expected to stick to a narrower range of looks (at least in formal wear). In some countries women aren’t allowed to do that and that’s also seen as the patriarchy oppressing them. (which I agree it is… )

I also don’t think having your clothes discussed - whether you’re Boris, Jeremy, Theresa or Victoria - means nothing else matters and you can’t be discussed or judged on other topics.

Actually I would also still describe someone who worked for Clifford Chance (HQ in Canary Wharf) as a “City lawyer”. It’s just a synonym for being a lawyer who has corporate and financial institution clients. Conversely if a firm specialising in human rights law happened to have an office near Liverpool Street I would not describe their solicitors as City Lawyers.

In other words, it’s not really a geographical term at all, it’s a descriptive one which just happens to be derived from the traditional geographical location of financial institutions.

Unlikely that someone who is doing civil liberties work in Camden is specialising in corporate clients.

I find it very odd that people are trying to portray the Stammers as loaded having just come out of years of genuinely rich PMs like Sunak, Boris Johnson & Cameron!

As others have said, their lifestyle is pretty normal financially for professionals Londoners, most of whom happen to have million pound houses but do not have millionaire lifestyles.

I don't recall a single news piece on it, Starmers wife is "First Lady" since yesterday and she's been turned into the medias favourite new flower pot already because she's wearing some silly red dress.

They made a point of it when she first got the job.

i think they got bored of it pretty quickly though.

She's Lady Victoria Starmer or Lady Starmer. Not Lady Victoria.

Truth is they're both a good looking couple. I bumped into Starmer (and his body guards!) last week while shopping in Covent Garden and he is handsome but was much shorter than I thought ha ha

Both women looked good - slightly prefer the chevronny one - but mostly as the red wouldn’t suit me. I’m afraid I like Carrie’s style too..

No problem with Starmer and family being wealthy - he’s in his 60s, he’s been a lawyer for decades, is married to an lawyer and a homeowner, I should hope he HAS made some money. It’s not illegal to be a success financially or even morally wrong.

You don’t go to Oxford with dreams of bouncing along the bottom of your overdraft in middle age.

This
I hate that we encourage education , hard work and ambition and then criticise people when it brings them wealth. Are we genuinely saying anyone who has a high earning capacity should give it all away?
I totally appreciate many people study and work hard and don’t end up wealthy but some do and always will. Of course there is often a massive dollop of privilege that allows some to get in that bracket when others don’t but surely becoming a labour politician suggests he is keen to address this?

1m in Kentish Town wouldn't get you much at all. 1.5m would get you a modest townhouse at best.

It’s worth about 2.8m today.

Hmm. Really wasn’t sure about that one. Mrs. Sunak (can’t remember the name she goes by 🥴) is tiny with delicate features and I think it absolutely swamped her.

Not that it matters, of course.

I know, that’s exactly what I said @Stowickthevast . I was explaining to the pp what “City” meant, and why Hodge Jones & Allen never was and never will be a City firm.

TimeandMotion · 06/07/2024 09:42

But that’s not what people mean when they call someone a “multi-millionaire”. For a start they’d need assets of more than 2 million. But even if the assets do reach that level, the expression is really a figurative one used to describe people who have liquid millions that they can spend freely.

They do have assets of at least £2m. The difference between their original mortgage (presumably paid off) and the current value of their house is over £2m.
