Polyester makes me sweaty, so I can't wear it. Angela Rayner looks pretty creased!

That suit is a wool/viscose blend so the viscose will be why it's creased.

Peregrina · 08/07/2024 11:52

I am not sure about that - viscose is a semi - artificial fibre made from cellulose i.e. wood chips, typically beech and now often mixed with bamboo.

I don't think her suit is very flattering though, with a too short jacket and baggy trousers.

I think it’s the way she’s wearing it, it doesn’t look great I agree.

im surprised they are wearing so many me and em clothes, it is moving into advertisement territory.

maltravers · 08/07/2024 16:16

I think Rayner is generally well presented, I thought the green suit looked awful though. The expense of the suit is not relevant, nobody asks the men how much their suits cost.

WhatWillIWear · 08/07/2024 16:22

(It is only on MN that women whose husbands are swanning about in £2,000 suits set themselves a strict budget of £100 for a dress … )

See I don’t. I think she tries very hard, but I think she struggles and doesn’t know what to wear. The green suit was Ill fitting on her and would have looked much better styled with a close fitting top .

in my view she struggles to be elegant, where as Victoria starmer or rishis wife inherently know how to do it. Irrelevant of if you like their style or not.

I don’t judge her for it though, but do think she’d have learned by now. I don’t doubt she’s mentally smart so would have expected her to be more comfortable in how to dress by now.

someone needs to teach her less is more. She should do th4 talking, not her clothes,

Myblindsaredown · 08/07/2024 16:30

The clothes always (unless the wrong colour) look ‘nice’. And make the women who wear them look pulled together and composed and smart (unless crumpled).

I suspect they have some sort of discount deal going on, maybe even free clothes, but labour needs to be carful as I think it’s now breaching advertising.

angela didn’t get the green suit right, she styled it all wrong, and she needs more tailored clothing. If she wanted green and she’s getting thrown freebies, something like this would have made her look fantastic.

Have I failed as a woman if I ever (ok, let's admit this, always) appear "in a very specific role" but I haven't "carefully thought out" my outfit?

FFS, don't many women struggle to be elegant? There is a kind of middle class poise that comes from being brought up by a poised middle class mum and going to a school full of similar girls brought up to be elegant. That inherent you talk about - that's privilege speaking.

I certainly don't have it and neither do many of my friends. I probably could acquire it if I was willing to put the effort in and spend a lot of money. But it's not really part of my core values.

Angela always looks beautifully made up and has fabulous hair. That green suit wasn't the most flattering thing she's worn. But honestly, she's looks pretty good and she's trying to run the country here, give the woman a break.

WhatWillIWear · 08/07/2024 16:47

If you decide to appear in front of the world’s press, on a day that will be talked about for a decade, without having given any thought at all to what you’ll wear - then you’ll have missed a lot of the fun of being in the spotlight. But if clothes don’t matter to you - I guess that’s fine too.

(When I was in the early training stage of my previous rather fancy career, one or two of the most successful woman I knew in the profession appeared as if they had dressed under a burst feather mattress, outside, in a hurricane. They earned more in a week than I will probably ever earn in a year now …)

Don’t lash out and be angry, it’s just a discussion. And no it’s not simply privalge, I grew up poor, I learned from copying successful women I admired, whilst developing my own style. And it’s fine for you not to wish to be elegant, who cares, but you’re not the deputy pm,and in front of the worlds cameras, you are not her, you cannot equate yourself to her.

rhere is no need to be angry and indignant really.

MidnightMeltdown · 08/07/2024 17:07

I don't think that Victoria's dress is particularly nice tbh. It works on her because the colour suits her, but I don't like the dress itself. The fabric and the sleeves are hideous, and I don't like the neckline. Angela's crumpled green suit is an absolute monstrosity.

Mind you, I don't really get the hype over Me+Em in general. Lots of people rave about it, so I've looked on the website a few times, but their clothes just don't appeal to me at all - OTT frills and bows, horrid prints, too low necklines, Mormon dresses and too baggy trousers. I just don't see the appeal, particularly at their prices.

WhatWillIWear · 08/07/2024 17:22

@MidnightMeltdown - I described it as ‘nice’, not nice. (Because I thought we were over ‘naice’ here.) I’m sure you’re aware of the distinction!

maltravers · 08/07/2024 17:30

I’m not sure you need poise (although no doubt it’s nice to have it), a business suit is there to be smart and unremarkable. Rachel Reeves generally seems to wear a dark suit, something of that order would be more suitable IMO

MrsWhattery · 08/07/2024 18:06

I like Victoria's dress a lot, at least on her (agree it's less appealing on the model) - shocked it's polyester though. For that money it could be a beautiful cotton/linen or cotton silk fabric. I like how it's red-ish, but doesn't scream "I dressed in Labour bright red!" and has a slightly boho vibe. I've never bought anything from Me+Em as it's mostly too formal and expensive for me, but they do the odd thing I like.

Re Akshata Murty's I applaud her making a bold style statement, but don't like the dress as much.

MrsWhattery · 08/07/2024 18:09

I do think it's interesting, and OK, to discuss the clothes of people in the public eye - I like fashion and style, I like to notice it and talk about it, just as with other kinds of design. And discussing men's as well as women's outfits is to be encouraged (when they do anything interesting - there's not much to say about Keir's and Rishi's suits and ties on this occasion).

But I agree with PPs, if someone isn't into clothes and style, male or female, that shouldn't be held against them.

I know what viscose is. I sometimes sew with it and some of it creases badly.

RestlessSparrow · 08/07/2024 20:51

I didn't like Angela Rayner's suit much but will happily give her a pass as a working politician who had a very long night and probably doesn't have the resources of Ms Murty or the time Victoria Starmer had. She looked a lot better than I would have looked after an all nighter, it would take me about a week to recover,

Peregrina · 08/07/2024 20:55

Sorry, yes, like linen also creases badly. Although I have to admit that none of the viscose clothes I have do crease. That's the trade off - synthetics don't but are not usually comfortable to wear.

Rainydayinlondon · 08/07/2024 23:49

Did anyone watch the BBC election news on the Friday morning? I’m sure Sophie Raworth’s pink dress was Me and Em as well.
I thought Victoria Starmer looked fantastic in the red dress and liked the short sleeved white jacket too.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 09/07/2024 07:55

Hannah fry looked stunning in a green suit on election night.

Such a strange question, @Rainydayinlondon. But the dress you mention was discussed earlier in this thread.

Not such a strange question really, bearing in mind we were discussing the prevalence of Me and Em clothes in the media around Election night.
Are you usually this critical?

Edited

You do know BBC news was not the only channel covering the election results? No need to be bitchy on Style and Beauty - in fact there's never any need, but it's more prevalent on AIBU.

Rainydayinlondon · 09/07/2024 09:57

Thank you! Also whilst lots of people watched the coverage overnight, the majority did NOT watch the coverage from 9 am on the Friday ( because they were at work and had seen the results overnight!!)
