Is it weird to wear a cross necklace if you're not a Christian or even religious?

I saw this gorgeous black cross necklace in River Island a few months back, (which they don't seem to have anymore 🙄). I'd really love one for my birthday but I'm wondering if it'd be weird to wear one when I'm an atheist? 🤔

It was a bit like this one.

No it's not unusual for non Christians to wear crosses at all, but that's horrible, sorry!

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/07/2024 19:20

I mean goths exist. Wearing crosses is pretty widespread in the alternative world, for atheists.

Demelzatheredhaired · 01/07/2024 19:22

I think the snake is a give away you’re more goth that pious isn’t it?

CatrionaBalfour · 01/07/2024 19:25

To answer your question, no - as a symbol it pre dates Christianity. Plus, wear what you like.
However, I've never seen a snake on a cross as a Christian symbol anyway.
If you like it, go for it.

CatrionaBalfour · 01/07/2024 19:27

According to the details on Amazon, this product is "satanist", so maybe that helps.

Goldusty · 01/07/2024 19:34

if you’re not religious why would you wear this? Personally, I find it insulting to Christianity if you wear this and it means nothing to you in any meaningful way…

The Virgin Mary often has a serpent around one ankle though. I don’t know if that’s mostly in Catholicism though.

OP, they’re being sold in river island. I think that’s your answer. It’s very common to wear them as fashion accessories. Nobody will think anything of it.

HowIrresponsible · 01/07/2024 19:36

I'm a Christian. I did compliment a colleague on their beautiful cross and discovered they were an atheist and just liked it. It's so bizarre.

that black cross is hideous

Poor snakes get such bad press. They'd re lovely IRL.

fatphalange · 01/07/2024 19:38

Of course not. It's a symbol commonly used in fashion/dress/art/alternative culture/ other stuff than religion.

Singersong · 01/07/2024 19:39

I am a Christian and find it deeply offensive. I really hate it.

Would you wear a burka or a yamaka as a fashion accessory?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/07/2024 19:43

I think you uploaded the wrong picture?

Grazyna80 · 01/07/2024 19:44

I’m a Christian and I don’t find anything wrong with it. It’s a fashion accessory, doesn’t mean anything. And it’s yarmulke.

Too true.
When I was a child we had a statue of The Blessed Virgin standing on a snake. I think it's a popular representation. She's crushing evil.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 01/07/2024 19:47

I like it.

But crosses existed before Jesus' crucifixion. I would agree that a non Christian should not wear a cross with an image of Jesus on it.

Don't they just? Most unfair. It starts in Genesis and continues from there. Always a representation of Satan.
Although I believe some Satanists do use the image

CheeseDreamsTonight · 01/07/2024 19:51

I sport mine with an amethyst centre and have done for years. Not a Christian.

No, but then again my country isn't 'culturally Jewish' or 'culturally Muslim'. This stuff cuts both ways.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 01/07/2024 19:58

If it was a crucifix with Jesus on it would be weird.
A plain cross I would assume you were Christian, but wouldn't think anything of it when I found out you weren't.
That cross clearly isn't a religious symbol.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/07/2024 19:59

Wearing a cross for fashion is fine, but that one looks like something you could buy for £1.99 on a market stall.

And are selling to 15 year olds who think black nail varnish makes them edgy 😂

Goths used to be better than this. I

Ah no, let's be honest, even in the 90s most teenage goths were fairly lightweight.
