Lovely people I have just ordered the Hobbs Rena plain knit dress in berry red.
The length , neck, colour are all very me, but the sleeves are not me!
Please do you have any ideas of what I can wear over it? Must cover the bingo wings! ( they actually blow about in the breeze!)
I was planning on wearing on a non formal river cruise for dinner, possibly for a few dinners out in the late summer, early autumn. I have both navy and black heeled courts that I can wear with it.
In the picture, John Lewis, the model is wearing a cardi, that might suit me, but I can't find it, and I wouldn't want a mismatched colour.
I would keep the cover-up on, so a jacket could not be too heavy.
I have classic cashmere cardis in navy and black, but would that make me look frumpy? I am in my 60's and look it.
Thank you in advance.

Very hopeful bump.
I found and ordered the cardi, It's called the Reena cardi, but it looks cropped, so I am not hopeful. I am tall and long bodied - just looks as if I have outgrown anything cropped!
Any ideas gratefully received.

Assuming you are happy with the fit of your black cashmere cardi, wearing it with your black court shoes and the dress sounds perfect OP.

I also like navy and red on those with the right colouring, but to me it has more of a business or daytime vibe.

gardenmusic · 23/06/2024 09:52

Thank you, Poetry, The black cashmere fits, it's just a classic cut, rather than shaped, if you see what I mean.

I do, and I understand that you want something that works with the lines of the new dress.

The cardi you’ve ordered may be a pleasant surprise. If not, could you look for something black and return it if successful?

gardenmusic · 23/06/2024 10:12

'you want something that works with the lines of the new dress'.
Thank you, that's what I wanted to say, but I am so far out of my depth that I didn't have the words.
The dress arrives today (John Lewis delivers to Waitrose) The cardi from Hobbs itself in a couple of days. I am ever the optomist!

Fingers crossed! Please let us know what happens

I picked up my dress today, having bored everybody with my in depth descriptions and anticipation.
When I opened the bag I found a navy gingham mini dress.
I have rung JL and told them that the bag says Reena red berry dress, but that it is this monstrosity. They are arranging an exchange, but I don't think the guy understood that the code on the bag is wrong.I am expecting a second navy mini dress...

Just ….. ouch. So sorry, OP

gardenmusic · 25/06/2024 19:16

Thank you poetryandwine, in the great scheme of things it's nothing, I am just thinking of the hassle of explaining it all over again.
I have discovered a lovely site, Ceffin. Special occasion, maybe.

Oh, is it Cefinn, Samantha Cameron’s company? I browse the site and like the styles very much. Some lovely silks, and the synthetics are supposed to travel very well. She makes a big point of that in interviews.

If you buy something I would love to hear what you think

gardenmusic · 25/06/2024 21:49

I think I will have to wait for a special occasion! Yes, it is her company, I had the spelling wrong.
Might have a browse in the autumn for a jumper.

OP posts:
poetryandwine · 25/06/2024 21:52

I am still waiting gor an occasion to buy!

gardenmusic · 27/06/2024 14:14

Well, the Hobbs Reena dress came, and I couldn't ask for a better fit or style. I love it. The colour is a lovely soft rose red shade.
Problem is the cardigan that is supposed to go with it - it's all over the place, looks like it has done multiple rounds on the wrong wash - won't hang together in any way shape or form. Up at the back, down at the front cannot even drape over my shoulders as it's still all over the place. The sleeves appear semi batwing!
I have tried cashmere classic cardis in navy and black, but it looks like I have my school jumper on with it.
I have a black tie cardi from Lauren, but it is a very stark contrast. An after thought rather than part of the outfit.
I have pashminas, but I am very angular, and I look like a granny in a shawl. I only wear them as scarves.
What I need is a top that goes with the line of the dress, and I cannot find one.
I think it has to go back, as I can't wear it with no sleeves.
So disappointed.

Do you live near a John Lewis, OP? They have personal shoppers. Could you bring the dress in and ask a PS to find a cardi that works with it?

gardenmusic · 27/06/2024 16:49

Thanks, Poetry. I had not thought of that. My nearest is 1hr away at Bluewater, but I think I will give that a go.
I have a beautiful quilted jacket from Wonderland Boutique (Do not google that! You will end up in some very strange places) it's gently padded with a black outer patterned with exotic birds and foliage in many colours, and is reversible to a plain fuchsia pink - the black side goes with it, but that's for outside wear.

@gardenmusic What about a neutral colour cashmere? Look at offerings by M&S, Brora, Denner, Pure etc. you can wear good jewellery that will look great.

gardenmusic · 27/06/2024 22:27

Tizer (oh that brings back memories!)
I would need it to be other than the classic cashmere cardi, which I have - the lines do not work with the dress. Neutral is a good idea - I need to have it sort of shaped, though.
I don't wear much jewellery, but I have an enormous silver locket which might go.

TizerorFizz · 27/06/2024 22:30

Would a cropped one work? Some are.

TizerorFizz · 27/06/2024 22:31

I think with a fit and flare style in a knit you don’t have lots of options.

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 07:34

One french egg, yes, that's it. It looks nicer in real life!
Tizer, Saxendi, you are quite right in that I need cropped, but I am tall and long bodied, and most cropped - including the Kettlewell (I am always disappointing myself there!) are too short.
I am sorry, and thanks for the help, I am such an awkward fit, it's unbelievable.

OneFrenchEgg · 28/06/2024 08:23

I would probably wear a cropped jersey jacket, I have a few and they look great as cover ups.

It sounds like something will work now, OP. I am glad.

The jacket sounds lovely! Thanks for the warning. It would not have occurred to me. BTW a few on this board have said recently that JL personal shoppers are not on commission, which I find a big relief. I had not realised
