Lovely people I have just ordered the Hobbs Rena plain knit dress in berry red.
The length , neck, colour are all very me, but the sleeves are not me!
Please do you have any ideas of what I can wear over it? Must cover the bingo wings! ( they actually blow about in the breeze!)
I was planning on wearing on a non formal river cruise for dinner, possibly for a few dinners out in the late summer, early autumn. I have both navy and black heeled courts that I can wear with it.
In the picture, John Lewis, the model is wearing a cardi, that might suit me, but I can't find it, and I wouldn't want a mismatched colour.
I would keep the cover-up on, so a jacket could not be too heavy.
I have classic cashmere cardis in navy and black, but would that make me look frumpy? I am in my 60's and look it.
Thank you in advance.

If you're handy with a needle or have a local seamstress you could cut sleeves off something else you think matches or contrasts and sew them in?

minipie · 28/06/2024 09:56

Or this

might be a bit hot for summer, depending on where you’re going to be

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 10:31

minipie,
Yes, and my friend has just looked, and laughed. She thinks there is something amiss with the cardigan. I would not have noticed, and just put it down to me.
Going to try another of the same.

Thank you all for your kindness and help. It is so soul destroying when nothing fits!

OP if you’re tall ( I have major height envy ! ) I think you’d look stunning in that dress .
I honestly wouldn’t even glance at your arms , I’d look at your profile and the striking colour of your dress .
just wondering if you’re thinking a lot about your arms and not appreciating your great points /assets ?

in any case have a great time .

gardenmusic · 28/06/2024 19:57

babbi

You are a sugar plum. However, the bingo wings do flutter in the breeze.

I'm also thinking I might need a cover up for autumnal use.
I have reordered the cardi after my friend fell about and said it was the cardi, not me. I will report back, and perhaps give up.

Hi OP if you are a size 8 or 12, The Outnet has a similar dress from Joseph but with elbow length sleeves. Reduced from 425 to 128. I agree with others, if the Hobbs dress in otherwise OK, I wouldn’t worry about your arms. Also, possible dresses on the Outnet from Victoria Beckham and Sandro.

gardenmusic · 29/06/2024 08:25

JaceLancs, Thanks, I love that cardigan. While the colour goes with the dress, it won't go with me. I have been stalking that cardi for about 3 years now, really want them to do it in a colour that suits me.

LadyLapsang,
Thank you. I vary between a 14/16 or M/L. Except in Marks where I am a 12.

The Outnet is a new one on me, so I will have a browse.

I think as the dress is knitted it will look odd with a non matching knitted cardigan, at least it will look intentional with the red one.

I would keep the cardigan and see if you can get it tailored. It is possible to narrow the sleeves of cardigans and even adjust the shoulders. A small adjustment could make it hang better. Take a cardigan that fits you better as a guide.

gardenmusic · 29/06/2024 08:49

NotMeNoNo,
Thank you. Yes, that seems to be the better look. I have ordered the same cardigan again, as I think I may have been sent a misfit!

Butterflysunshine01,
Thank you. I love Phase Eight and have been lucky with their knitwear before. I have something very similar, but it was too much of a contrast, more an afterthought than part of the outfit.

Thank you all so much for your input, in the end the dress went back because I just couldn't style it with anything that fitted me. (Long and Gangly).
I'm back on the hunt.

How frustrating! I hope you enjoy the hunt. Perhaps we can help

gardenmusic · 09/07/2024 15:13

Thank you Poetryandwine I have seen something in Sea Salt, on line. It is the same shape, with long sleeves and is navy blue, it's called the Folk Song.
It has poor reviews, but I am going to try it. I just wish they would put the length on their descriptions.

Seasalt do put the length. Click on size guide and it gives the actual measurements of their garments. Good luck with your quest!

gardenmusic · 09/07/2024 15:31

Quinque, Thank you! 119 cm would be just about a midi for me.
Ordering now.

Sorry that you felt you needed to send it back. I was going to suggest that an ombre cardigan might work - this is probably cheap and nast bu so long as one of the shades was a red in the right ballpark it should work and look considered. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Evening-Cardigan-Lightweight-Leopard-Clearance/dp/B0CNP12SLW?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2PXR8ZJB43M3N

I sympathise re wanting to cover your arms as I have mild psoriasis and basically now only buy sleeveless things in black or navy as I have a number of undersleeves in those shades I can add. The one place that did a decent range in other colours has closed sadly.

Thank you londonmummy1966. I think that might have toned in.
It's the bingo wings in my case...

Mumsy of four and a half and proud etsy shop owner, DD2 (Chardoneigh) was a big fan on the green, it worked miracles! Let me tell you, DD2 needed a miracle. As a former hourglass myself, let me tell you my husbands bussin' roast beef has not been kind on the 'ol waistline, but still made me feel like a fair maiden once again! In fact, i felt so confident I left my husband all together lol

DS1 - the gay one - (Sauvignon-blonk) however tryed it on himself, and I think he was tell me something! oh how a dress can bring a family together.

DD1 (Prozeco) tryed it on and made it look ugly fugly, but what did I expect! Lol mumslife.

DS2 (Tylernol) didn’t want to try it on so I took away his iPod touch. Goodness gracious the impact of screens on this generation! Really makes you think! Back in my day, we just played outside all day and bullied the gay kid! Ah what a laugh! As my DD would say Oh Em Gee.

Ever since we bought it we've been living, we've been loving and we've been laughing!! (Other than my husband ofc, who now lives in the trailor park and has been arrested for public urination whilst drunk lololol).

Whilst I’m here, any tips on dealing with a whale like daughter????? Her circumference is frankly terrifying! We had to introduce an open plan downstairs so she could get around!! Not cheap!!! Reminds me of my uncle, Derik, he died of a stroke!!
