Do you like it?

I'm conflicted - it's a truly classic ageless scent or not?

@RosaRoja I'm shocked by perfume inflation too. Some perfumes seem to have doubled in price in the last few years. They're crazy expensive now.

RosaRoja · 06/06/2024 08:53

@WhereAreWeNow exactly, I’d always found them just that little bit out of reach, enough to feel special when you buy and use them. But this is getting ridiculous. I buy for Xmas etc and, thankfully, DDs are still into ‘celebrity’ perfumes (Ariana, Billie Eilish), which are still ok. But my old faves are so expensive. OTOH not much more than a “top-up” shop in Tesco which only has cat litter and such.

No. Absolutely awful. To me it smells exactly like 1970’s fly spray. Vapona, I think it was called. I was shocked the first time I smelled Chanel no.5!

Having said that, I love Tuberose - the purer and stronger the better, which most people seem to hate.

I love Tuberose too!

I have the Diptyque reed diffuser in Tuberose and I find it intoxicating.

BodyKeepingScore · 06/06/2024 09:09

I like it on some people and not on others, or on myself. I know it has a reputation for being "timeless" but it wouldn't be to my taste

It smells very old lady to me

This! I used to love it...thought it a real classic. However over the last couple of years I've totally gone off it as it just reminds me of old ladies and smells very musty
I'm an 'old' lady too by the way 😂

RosaRoja · 06/06/2024 09:44

I love tuberoses too. Reminds me of a holiday in Cyprus. I’ve just looked up the Chanel tuberoses one, starts at £215, so that’s out of the way. I can see a Givenchy limited edition at £93 for 50 ml, but only the same few (excellent) reviews on all websites.

Absolute classic and I love it. Is there any similar? To that floraly clean soap smell it has? I've never found one even close
My great aunty always wore no5 and I loved it as a child. Got my first bottle as an 18th birthday present from my mum (it lasted me 3 years!)

Have you tried Flower by Kenzo? Its a powdery floral scent

Deathraystare · 06/06/2024 10:08

I like it on other people but used to 'cheat; and use Coty L'aimant instead!

twoandcooplease · 06/06/2024 10:58

I haven't smelled Kenzo for years @CassandraMusk do you think they are similar? I will give it a spray when I'm next in the perfume shop - thank you ☺️

When did perfumes get so expensive? I saw this in duty free last week, I thought it must be the mega-volume bottles. But I’m looking online and everything is closer to £100, I’m sure prices have gone up massively in the past year.

I don’t know about Chanel as I haven’t bought any of theirs in years but LbTy is £225 for 100ml, and I’m sure its about to go up. Byredo perfumes just went up to £150 for 50ml. Shocking.

Pallisers · 06/06/2024 14:46

it smells like cheap old-fashioned perfume on me. None of the chanel perfumes work on me.

Does that smell like it then?

TheCourtierTapsHisFan · 06/06/2024 15:04

I’m not a fan. I find all aldehyde notes really unpleasant and with the addition of the powdery iris note, no, definitely not for me.

I admire its longevity and it still seems to have an ongoing young adult fan base. The note profile is very different to so many modern floral and gourmand perfumes.

Yes Coty L'Aimant was made in 1927 and Chanel No 5 was made in 1924. They are definitely similar, but one is under ten quid

That was my go to, as well. Loved that scent.

Katiesaidthat · 06/06/2024 15:41

I used to love n19. No5 i thought was old fashioned even back in the 90s.

Marshfritillary · 06/06/2024 16:59

I used to wear No 5 as my late DH used to give it to me. I find it very heavy now and do not like it much.

AngryLikeHades · 06/06/2024 17:14

No one is asking for this, but if people are withholding from buying no. 5, Vogue by Milton Lloyd fragrances is an extremely cheap and strong, good copy of it.
You can buy it from Amazon.
There are a few people that don't think it's a good enough dupe (check the reviews and also look at Fragrantica because it has its own listing.
It's around £5 per bottle and mine lasts a year of daily, heavy use.

FloofPaws · 06/06/2024 17:32

Love it but overall favourite is mademoiselle coco - I always get compliments, men and women

They are great little dupes. My son absolutely loves their Heavenly Spirit one which is a dupe of the men’s Angel!

It reminds me of baby powder. Not nice
