Do you like it?

I'm conflicted - it's a truly classic ageless scent or not?

Just make sure it doesn't give you a headache.

Almost all the Chanels have a strong aldehyde element which triggers headache in susceptible people.

Which is a shame as I like the scent.

Is that what it is. I really can't stand Chanel fragrances they smell off to me

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 17:23

Yeah. You’ll all be ‘old ladies’ if you’re lucky! Very rude to write off a scent that way. Marilyn Monroe doesn’t quite fit the image does she???

It was very popular with women back in the day so obviously it reminds people of the women who continue to wear it who are now ild

ThingsWillOnlyGetBetter · 05/06/2024 20:24

Adore it. Goes with every outfit (from jeans and a t-shirt to full on glamour) and with every occasion and I’m never without a bottle of the EDP. I also have a bottle of the parfam which is divine.

It’s a beautiful blend of cold, white florals and aldehydes with a deep warmth that’s enhanced when it comes into contact with the skin.

Alittlefrustrated · 05/06/2024 20:29

I wore Coco in my 20's - 1990's. Even then, I found No 5 old fashioned. I don't find Coco smells the same now. The price of perfume has sky rocketed in the last few years.

stayathomer · 05/06/2024 20:29

Personally I find all Chanel too overpowering!!

ImWearingPantaloons · 05/06/2024 20:43

Have worn it for nearly 40 years.

Smells amazing for hours on me

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

My comment is not ageist.

Well we will have to disagree.

SloaneStreetVandal · 05/06/2024 20:49

I like it.
I always preferred/used Coco though, my husband bought me Mademoiselle in error once and that is my fave scent now (it's weird, I'm not terribly keen on Coco now).

WorriedGCSEMum · 05/06/2024 20:50

Love it but prefer older version

  • 2 unconnected people have told me it smells very different on me in a nice way

Love the Gardenia - I have to wait for JL to have 15% off though as it's very pricey .

Wimbledonmum1985 · 05/06/2024 20:57

Love No 5, I’ve worn it for years. I’ve also worn at various times Cristalle, No 19, Allure, Chance.

Also love Youth Dew. It’s a beautiful classic.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 05/06/2024 21:05

No to No.5. Too floral

I love Coco but it triggers my migraines like nothing else, so I just lovingly smell the bottle once in a blue moon.

I also love Mitsouko (Guerlain) but the original one in the tiny bottle. The parfum.

WhereAreWeNow · 05/06/2024 21:37

I do like No5 but not enough to wear it myself. I prefer Coco and Mademoiselle. I also love some of Les Exclusifs especially Cuir de Russie.
I don’t think Chanel produce any bad perfumes. It's just a question of personal taste which ones you like best.

Persus · 05/06/2024 21:45

Gorgeous as is Coromandel and Sycomore

Lemonademoney · 05/06/2024 21:47

I like it but only use a tiny bit as it’s a strong fragrance. It’s timeless.

NotMeNoNo · 05/06/2024 23:16

Don't like it, too sweet. I love Chanel No. 19 but DH can't remember numbers and bought me a big bottle of No. 5 for Christmas one year.

Catnipcupcakes · 06/06/2024 02:03

I hate no.5 but like CoCo. I can’t wear it much though because it makes DH feel ill. Its the sandalwood.

He loves coco mademoiselle. So do I, actually, but its so ubiquitous atm that when I had a bottle I had strange men actually say ‘Coco Mademoiselle?’. On meeting me. Creepy.

For evening I wear LbTy Wild Rosinda or Fracas. For daytime I wear Philosophy Amazing Grace.

ColdGirlWinter · 06/06/2024 02:05

Why are perfumes changed? I've heard complaints about Poison, Opium and other YSL perfumes not being the same, now this!

Its usually to do with ingredients being put on ‘banned’ lists (because they’re deemed unsafe by modern standards or they’re from endangered animal species, like ambergris) or becoming too expensive.

Mitsouko apparently used to be much more deep, dark and gorgeous but then a moss that was in it was named as a toxic substance so they had to take it out and it lost all its ‘mystery’. I like Mitsouko, but I’ve never smelled the original.

Peonii · 06/06/2024 02:20

I don't like it, it gives me a headache. Whatever that component is, it's in other perfumes which also induce a headache.

PurpleWhirple · 06/06/2024 05:58

I love it but use sparingly. Have just this week finished the first bottle of it I ever bought. I remember buying it when pregnant with a baby who's now nearly 15.

Also love number 19 but they are very different scents. I have coco too which is nice but doesn't quite hit the love note like the other two. Tried coco mademoiselle but it's too sweet for me. I do like Chanel perfumes in general, as a PP said they are strong enough but not overwhelming. I don't sample new ones as I can't afford to buy them any more and don't want to fall in love with a new one!

RosaRoja · 06/06/2024 06:16

Always loved it. I’m inching towards old lady age now, so quite legitimate 🥹

NewMe2024 · 06/06/2024 06:18

I love it because it reminds me of my mum, but that also makes me feel like it isn’t ‘my’ perfume iyswim. I occasionally buy a bottle but then revert to my usual Diptyque choice which smells like ‘me’.

LePetitMarseillias · 06/06/2024 07:18

Hate it. Prefer No19.

RosaRoja · 06/06/2024 08:22

When did perfumes get so expensive? I saw this in duty free last week, I thought it must be the mega-volume bottles. But I’m looking online and everything is closer to £100, I’m sure prices have gone up massively in the past year.

HysteriaOfTheWanderingWomb · 06/06/2024 08:43

Perfumes are so personal.
I always used to wear Poeme by Lancome and was always getting compliments and it really felt like me.
Then one day a colleague was wearing a perfume and the same people who had complimented me in the past were not enjoying this scent, I didn't like it either... It was the same perfume - but on a different individual it just smelled completely different!
