Do you like it?

I'm conflicted - it's a truly classic ageless scent or not?

We also had one elderly gent who’d come through the hall often and spritz a little on a handkerchief and he’d smell it. He said his wife who had passed away always wore it and whenever he had a whiff of it he was always taken right back to thinking of her.*

🥺

thedendrochronologist · 05/06/2024 16:57

Wow it's pretty divisive!

I have tried it in the past and not liked it, thinking it was the preserve of older ladies!

I tried it on holiday this year and could see some the appeal. There was a woman in the shop who spend £700 on Chanel (it was buy 2 get one free) and she was young and stylish.

Now I wonder if I am missing out!

Yuk. Old lady perfume. Bit like that estee lauder one..youth dew or something like that?

thedendrochronologist · 05/06/2024 16:59

I used to wear Mademoiselle. It went of it as about sweet and love and always will love allure.

I really can’t stand it - It’s so cloying.

LiterallyOnFire · 05/06/2024 17:00

I love it. It's elegant and classic.

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 16:51

All that matters is whether you like it. I have never considered whether strangers like my perfume!

What's the point in any post?

It’s one of the very best, the EDT is an easier wear personally.

No.5 L’eau is also very good. Try the new Comete from their Les Exclusifs collection for something different but still very Chanel.

Paris-Paris and Venise are fabulous too.

Miriad · 05/06/2024 17:02

Chanel is tested on animals. So if you feel comfortable with that, then go ahead 🤷‍♀️

Mytholmroyd · 05/06/2024 17:04

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 16:52

@Mytholmroyd the fuss is because Marilyn Monroe wore it so it has a kind of cult status.

Yes I know, but they also promote it heavily over all the other ones and I don't know anyone who likes or wears it!

mewkins · 05/06/2024 17:07

I really like it but I like a lot of Chanel perfumes. It smells of almonds and bubble wands to me. It is definitely wintery and woolly to me, not a hint of summer.

Oddly, lots of perfumes make me feel queasy but this one never has .

DramaAlpaca · 05/06/2024 17:09

No, it doesn't suit my skin. I'm a No. 19 woman.

Viviennemary · 05/06/2024 17:13

Mytholmroyd · 05/06/2024 16:31

I have never liked it - prefer No. 19 (before they changed it!) or Coromandel or Bois d'Isles - I never have understood why so much focus is on No.5 when they do some many much better ones!

I love the bois d' isles. But I only had a small sample. I've got a bottle of the No 18 which was one of those specials. Thats really nice but again a bit overpowering. I think they might be discontinued now. Not sure.

Lenoftheglen · 05/06/2024 17:14

I don't get the 'old lady perfume' comments but it is all subjective I suppose.

I love it as do my tween and teen daughters. I only wear it in the evening though. For me it is a dress up scent!

paulhollywoodshairgel · 05/06/2024 17:14

My daughter declared Chanel number 5 smells like pee and like the toilets at school so I don't think I'll be trying it 😂😂

Typical ageist type comments that proliferate on these boards all too often

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 17:23

Yeah. You’ll all be ‘old ladies’ if you’re lucky! Very rude to write off a scent that way. Marilyn Monroe doesn’t quite fit the image does she???

JulesJules · 05/06/2024 17:37

Not really a fan, I far prefer no. 19

TheChosenTwo · 05/06/2024 17:38

It smells like wee on me and I find it quite cloying, heady and overpowering on others so no, not a fan!

Fontainebleau007 · 05/06/2024 17:38

Yes I love it though coco is my favourite

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/06/2024 17:46

I got given a bottle for my 21st and have had a bottle (not the same one!) on the go ever since. I am now 51, so I suppose it is right that I smell like “old lady”, per pps, whatever that means.

My favourite Chanel is 19, and I also love Cristalle. I can’t bear Coco or any of that “family”.

Almahart · 05/06/2024 17:48

I love Cristalle, it's my all time favourite scent.

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 17:50

Used To love Cristalle but it’s changed.

LoreleiG · 05/06/2024 17:53

I love it. Reminds me of my DM.

JeepJeepJeep · 05/06/2024 18:03

Perfume smells differently on different people.

I dislike most perfume, but love no5, which smells warm and baby powderish on me.
I don't feel like me, without it on.
