Do you like it?

I'm conflicted - it's a truly classic ageless scent or not?

Chanel is tested on animals. So if you feel comfortable with that, then go ahead 🤷‍♀️

This. If you you're OK with the idea of animals being tortured then crack on ladies.

Wow it's pretty divisive!

I have tried it in the past and not liked it, thinking it was the preserve of older ladies!

I tried it on holiday this year and could see some the appeal. There was a woman in the shop who spend £700 on Chanel (it was buy 2 get one free) and she was young and stylish.

Now I wonder if I am missing out!

Oh heaven forfend that anyone could be old and stylish.

The usual, casual ageism rears its head again- not just your comment.

I don't like Chanel No 5. I didn't like it when I was 22 and I don't like it now. I don't like any Chanel perfume.

Just make sure it doesn't give you a headache.

Almost all the Chanels have a strong aldehyde element which triggers headache in susceptible people.

Which is a shame as I like the scent.

That's so interesting! Most strong perfumes give me a headache, and I rarely wear any scent as they never smell right on me.

KitKatChunki · 05/06/2024 19:15

It's memorable. My issue is, does it remind him of someone else...
I really don't like the idea of smelling like an ex, smell is too personal for me.

It’s one of the very best, the EDT is an easier wear personally.

No.5 L’eau is also very good. Try the new Comete from their Les Exclusifs collection for something different but still very Chanel.

Paris-Paris and Venise are fabulous too.

Paris-Paris is my favourite at the moment.

Ozanj · 05/06/2024 19:20

I love it but if that’s the scent you like you can probably find some collectable ouds for cheaper.

WayOutOfLine · 05/06/2024 19:22

I think it smells of 'old ladies' because it was popular at a time there were few perfumes compared with now when there's 100's, and so it was a common scent amongst older people. I do think it smells dated compared with other scents out there, it's not a modern fragrance at all. I prefer no 19 or something else. I don't think it's ageist to point out that many people associate it with their mum or grandma; it's of its time, it's not timeless.

Tarkan · 05/06/2024 19:22

I love it. I wore it on my wedding day as my something borrowed as my mum had some and it reminds me of that. She then gave me it as a gift afterwards and just the tiniest bit is enough to last without being too strong. Even if we both wear it at the same time it smells totally different on each of us so I think that can affect how people feel about it as it.

Thursdaygirl · 05/06/2024 19:22

I love it, people always make nice comments when I wear it

Catnipcupcakes · 05/06/2024 19:30

No. Absolutely awful. To me it smells exactly like 1970’s fly spray. Vapona, I think it was called. I was shocked the first time I smelled Chanel no.5!

Having said that, I love Tuberose - the purer and stronger the better, which most people seem to hate.

muddyford · 05/06/2024 19:32

I can't wear it. It turns to a rancid, acidic smell on my skin.

Benjina · 05/06/2024 19:38

JeepJeepJeep · 05/06/2024 18:03

Perfume smells differently on different people.

I dislike most perfume, but love no5, which smells warm and baby powderish on me.
I don't feel like me, without it on.

Yes, Chanel No. 5 is one of the few perfumes that doesn't smell nasty (sweet and cloying) on me. It has a nice dry, non-floral smell. But several people on here seem to describing it as sweet and cloying. So obviously your skin chemistry must make a big difference!

ZenNudist · 05/06/2024 19:40

No never liked it. My DM used to but long before she was an "old lady". (Nasty thing to say calling it an old lady perfume)

I think Allure and Coco mademoiselle EDP are my faves.

Love Allure Sensuelle for a night out. Very strong fragrance.

I find Chance and Gabrielle and Coco Noir a bit meh but still nice scents.

Don't like 19 Or 5.

I'm a real Chanel fan. I find it hard to find new scents I like. Chanel perfume is strong enough I can actually smell it but not overpowering.

thedendrochronologist · 05/06/2024 19:49

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

My comment is not ageist.

I have a bottle and love it but conflicted due to her being a nazi sympathiser.

maw1681 · 05/06/2024 19:56

No I don't, too heavy for me. I like Chanel coco mademoiselle though

Josette77 · 05/06/2024 19:59

No but I love Chanel #22 and #4.

#5 is too aggressive for me.

I read though that Kate Moss sprays it on after her bath at night. I like that.

FindingMeno · 05/06/2024 20:01

Love it, but can't afford it!

Clarice99 · 05/06/2024 20:04

Typical ageist type comments that proliferate on these boards all too often

I agree. The casual ageism is more sickening than any perfume on the market.

darksigns · 05/06/2024 20:05

Nope, though one of my relatives used to practically drown themselves in it, so I associate it with being an overpowering scent.
I do wear No.19 sometimes and much prefer it.

bruffin · 05/06/2024 20:09

Hate it, makes me feel sick, and i'm old!

CheerfulBunny · 05/06/2024 20:11

I love it and have some but every time I use it I'm reminded that it doesn't really suit me. It smelled gorgeous on my late mum and if I catch it on someone else it's lush but obviously there's something off in my skin chemistry. As it wears off it goes 'yucky', sort of musky and soapy. No 19 and Christelle are nicer on me but don't have that same iconic status as No 5.

drainthebath · 05/06/2024 20:12

Didn't like it when my mum wore it in the 80s. Still don't like it now. Don't really like any Chanel fragrances. Not sure what it is but there is some common underlying base note I can't stand

Eurydice84 · 05/06/2024 20:14

I love it!!!!
