Another vote for Fitflop Gracie. I have buniony feet which cause me issues but I can walk miles in these.

Meadowfinch · 31/05/2024 20:48

I've bought Paula Urban Resort sandals this year, as I need something fairly tidy for work at conferences, but I have wide feet.

They have leather uppers and have good support for when I'm on my feet all day.

Scissorsisters · 31/05/2024 20:58

Josef Seibel Tongas - look for ones with adjustable straps.

What do you use them for, OP?
Some of the ones linked to here, I would not walk far in.
I am wondering what an "old lady" sandal is.

I love Merrells (pic). I may buy mens to get wider toe box. Nothing else compares for comfort, and I can walk in them long distances over rough ground (helps that I'm < 70 kg). But they are awful in rain or for cycling. Not cheap & previously MNers called them Fugly.

My last effort to wear Birkenstocks was decades ago: stiff & uncomfy.

OMG, those are truly ugly sandals IMO.

Blacknailer · 31/05/2024 21:41

I got some Gabor ones which are pretty good and come in wide fit.
But I've just tried Merrell Terran Backstrap and they feel amazing. Went half a size up to get the width but the back is adjustable so it's fine.

I like New Look flatforms

JaceLancs · 31/05/2024 22:21

I’ve just bought some Rieker sandals for DM
they are lovely in the black or tan leather - too wide for me so assume good for those who need wide fit

These are so very comfortable for wider feet. They are stretchy so if you have one ankle a bit puffy but the other ankle is normal, both feet fit. I've bought 4 pairs in different colours for summer.

Badgertime · 01/06/2024 01:19

Sketchers do a range of sandals too. Van Dal are often wider fitting and I've worn Tamaris as well.
I have some FitFlop and the width is decent but I needed to go half a size bigger as they run a little small.

Cliedi · 01/06/2024 08:14

Ecco, moshulu, merrell and especially hotter very much ARE old lady sandals which is exactly what OP has asked to avoid!

OP why give up your Birkenstocks when they are in the middle of a revival?! Get some mocha arizonas

Dogskidsdogs · 01/06/2024 08:19

Saltwater sandals

Thistooshallpass. · 01/06/2024 08:23

You said not old lady sandals .. so not hotter , Gabor , Reiker !
I'm sure they are like slippers but definitely for an older demographic.

Air and grace are very comfortable, new look and m and s both do wide fit ones that are more fashion led .

Thistooshallpass. · 01/06/2024 08:25

Also Ecco , Skechers , fitflop ... never going to be stylish or not an older persons choice .

Smallshaw · 01/06/2024 09:12

I don't think Air & Grace offer a wide fitting though? Perhaps it has changed in the last year or so but they were just a standard width previously.

Moshulu are good for wide feet.

I recently bought some of these as Birkenstock alternatives and I bloody love them.

My go to are Hotter tourist sandals, cheap(ish) and oh so comfortable. Also Calla and sole bliss have some pretty stylish sandals for wide feet but a bit more pricey.

£79!!

Yes but compared to the sandals on sole bliss and calla which are £150, they are good value!

You can also regularly find them in the sale. I got my last pair in m&s sale for around £50.

Call me cheap but I can't imagine paying £50 for sandals either! Saying that, I've just paid £5K on the dog who broke his elbow this week and thought it was reasonable! 🤦

lljkk · 01/06/2024 12:44

I think of Merrell as sandals I would walk miles & miles in off road & around town while still having comfy feet. Great to hear that miles of walking in the countryside or city is exactly what we think "old ladies" should be routinely happy to do.

Hotpinkangel19 · 01/06/2024 12:46

Wide feet shouldn't equal old lady frumpy sandals though! I'm 40, not ready for frumpy shoes and sandals yet!

It's often all that's on offer though. There's so few brands offering wide fit. I'm limited to the wide ranges in Next, M&S and Clarks. M&S's wide section is often frumpy although I did get a nice pair of boots last year. I know New Look do wide fit but the shoes are low quality, synthetic crappy materials with no arch support.

And I'm fed up of people recommending brands 'good for wide feet' when they're not. They might be on the slightly generous side of average but they're not wide.

Shoe shopping is a total headache for me. Brands seem to have improved clothing size inclusivity so why not shoe width?

borntobequiet · 01/06/2024 13:01

I wear Menorcan sandals all the time in the summer (proper ones from Menorca). They’re the most comfortable footwear I own, even though flat and und unpadded.
