I've just discovered dungarees, I want to buy them ALL

I'm 45, 'too old' for dungarees I expect but I've bought 2 pairs and I love them! They're so comfortable, so practical.

I'm eyeing up summer ones, autumn ones, winter ones. How many pairs is too many? This is all I'd wear now if I could get away with it!

OP posts:

@mynameiscalypso I find them practical because they don't ride down at the back when I'm gardening. In jeans this happens and I get a 'gardener's tan' i.e. a sunburnt strip across my back between jeans and tshirt. Also, they're very comfortable, like you say, no waistband.

This is exactly why I'm tempted, I want them for the allotment 😂

TammyOne · 07/05/2024 09:13

My teenage son has just told me “no, please do not….. “ so I think I have to get a pair now!!

Haha! You definitely must. My teen son is wandering about in a blouson style sweatshirt and a headband and yet it’s me that’s the embarrassing one apparently 🤔

So dungarees are both ‘try hard’ and an indication that someone’s ’given up’ - schrodinger’s dungarees? I can see why you’d struggle with them if you’re a person who thinks that people of a particular age should act or dress in a particular way - I happen to disagree with this. I see people of all shapes, sizes and ages wearing them and most of them look great, even if they don’t if they’re happy it doesn’t matter in the slightest.

I’m really interested to know what clothes someone ‘should’ be wearing in their 50s and 60s, which demonstrates the exact correct level of caring about their appearance including what they weigh.

"schrodinger’s dungarees"
Brilliant! I want a pair. Will they still be there if I put them in the wardrobe?

The correct clothes for someone in their 50s and 60s?

Neat skirt and blouse in National Trust anorak beige.
Size 14 but obviously trying and failing constantly to be size 10 again because that's all that matters.

Neutral tights and a medium heel court.

Subtle dusting of blue eyeshadow and lipstick like The Old Queen would have worn. See also Queen for handbag.
Tidy bob (no grey/but also no sign you've been near the dye - most important for people to see you keep trying, but never to the extent where it looks like you're trying because that is WRONG).

A general air of 'I accept I'm an invisible husk and spend my weekends sobbing into a mirror that no longer reflects the image of Felicity Kendall circa 1978'.

Put on your dungas, eat a cake, do your shit and fuck 'em all.

I'm 60 short and busty but have three pair now and love them as long as the shirt underneath doesn't roll up. I don't think I'm trying too hard, rather I have no f**ks left to give what anyone else thinks.

I find those with a panel crossover thing at the back, rather than the straps which come straight off the waistband, stop that roll up thing altogether.

Disturbia81 · 07/05/2024 09:27

God people are nasty. Wear what the hell makes you happy OP, we'll all be dust one day.

Illfollowthesun · 07/05/2024 09:30

@Churchview ”most important for people to see you keep trying, but never to the extent where it looks like you're trying”
Yes!! Sod that!

Horrendous.

Im pleased you said that as your posts on Mumsnet are always such absolute bollocks that I look out for them.

Dungarees must be great.

TammyOne · 07/05/2024 09:41

I’m considering a name change to InvisibleHusk now..

KnittedCardi · 07/05/2024 10:24

My 26 year old daughter, bought me for my 56th birthday, a pair of Lucy and Yak, as she thought they would look cute on me. I never would've thought of buying them myself. I love, love, love, them. I am going to buy more. I don't care what anyone else thinks. I am big boobed, and small hipped, so they actually balance me out!

DrJoanAllenby · 07/05/2024 10:31

This thread keeps crashing h and I can't see if my last post came out or not!

It was about Hale and Pace. That's all you need to know about Dungarees - Billy and Johnny!

Princessfluffy · 07/05/2024 10:48

Dungarees are the best.
I have:
4 different blue denim pairs
4 corduroy
5 pairs of the Ziggy ones at Free People in bright colours
2 summer shorts versions

This seems about the right number to me so maybe aim for 15

fettybord · 07/05/2024 11:35

I love dungarees! My favourites came from sainsburys!! Go for it!

fettybord · 07/05/2024 11:38

@Churchview I bloody love this!!!

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 07/05/2024 11:44

savoycabbage · 07/05/2024 08:22

And this is a thread on Style and Beauty on a talk forum.

It’s not a list of dungarees to be given to the police.

@savoycabbage
No need to get tetchy.
Anyway some of us know our jumpsuits from our dungarees. I wouldn’t have wasted my time opening the link if I’d know they weren’t dungarees.

My teenage son has just told me “no, please do not….. “ so I think I have to get a pair now!!
I found nice 100% cotton ones on Amazon (that might fall apart) but look really comfortable and are inexpensive.

I really don’t get saying things like too “try hard”. Most posters are saying they love them because they are comfortable. But even if they were trying to be trendy or create a fun look, what’s wrong with that?

Which ones? I'm also looking on Amazon but not willing to part with money until I see reviews.

Startingagainandagain · 07/05/2024 12:29

Love jumpsuits and dungarees. I am 53.

I found a pale green cotton pair in a charity shop that look like this for £6

https://lucyandyak.com/products/original-dungaree-organic-cotton-olive?variant=40294074220647&currency=GBP&istCompanyId=dcc139a6-53e9-4b17-a0c2-b8ccc374bc87&istFeedId=7171bd12-5f0c-4560-84c9-f51392775295&istItemId=lmirtrrpa&istBid=t&srsltid=AfmBOopsy0LYr1YPF3TY06EoNYfm9cOCRXVC3ERFnIIycQ4bQDjCq5OAp8Q

I wore them on Saturday for the first time when it was sunny with my favourite teeshirt and loved it! It just made me feel so happy.

I also wear dungarees to garden and do craft work.

I never understand the mentality of women (and men) who try to police what other women should wear based on their age or the concept that a woman should always concern herself about looking 'attractive', which invariably seem to involve skirts/heels, make-up and dresses.

Well, sod that.

I wear clothes that make me feel good about myself, reflect my personality and suit my lifestyle.

Startingagainandagain · 07/05/2024 12:33

''@DrJoanAllenby · Yesterday 22:21
Dungarees on a mature woman just look like you've given up.''

Given up on what?

In my case I have given up worrying about what judgemental, narrow minded people have to say about my appearance and clothing and I feel much happier for it...

Triceratopsiosis · 07/05/2024 12:41

This thread has been a delight Grin I also love them. I'm 38. Perhaps that makes me a desperate, old, fat has been. But I always feel slim and good in mine Smile

Livingtothefull · 07/05/2024 12:43

I don't think I could be bothered with any clothes - dungarees, jumpsuits etc - where I have to get fully undressed to go to the loo. Even the Victorians (despite their cumbersome clothes) thought the same; their drawers were open at the crotch.

So for me I think life's too short; but appreciate that is just me & many people like them...certainly wouldn't seek to 'police' those who want to wear them (or indeed any other garments I don't personally like).

Princessfluffy · 07/05/2024 15:46

These are my favourite Ziggy design from Free People.
Worn by me in my 50s and also by my DD in her 20s.

Have I given up?
Well I have given up dressing to please men, yes.
I have given up trying to look thinner than I actually am.
I have given up dressing to blend in or to match what I think people's expectations of me might be.
I have given up wearing make up because men don't feel it necessary to wear it and I don't enjoy wearing it.

Instead I wear clothes that I love and feel good in, in colours and shapes that I love.
Getting dressed is a source of joy to me every day and it boosts my mood. This doesn't feel like "giving up" as it feel great and makes me happy. I recommend this approach to getting dressed. Don't wait until your 50s to discover this.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 07/05/2024 08:24

Jambats and Run and fly are my favourite the jambats are more nipped in at the waist I also usually wear mine with docs and currently have purple hair. Also don't give a shiny shite about others opinions on my clothing 🤷🏻‍♀️

I discovered jambats last year. I have quite a few of their pinafores and a couple pairs of their dungarees (bats are my favourite) but I prefer the fit of run and fly. I think I look cool in them, I’m not in my 50’s or 60’s, also my 20 year old dd loves them too.

juniorspesh · 07/05/2024 16:36

I'm more of a boilersuit girl myself but I am surprised at the hate because my main problem with dungarees is their ubiquity. Lucy & Yak or similar has been very much the default uniform for women in their 30s and 40s round my way for a while. Like, the goes to festivals with the kids "6 Music Mum" look. It maybe peaked a year or two ago but it's still going pretty strong.

Me too, I'm 45 but have always loved them! Mine are like Buffy's 😍

DungareesAndTrombones · 08/05/2024 20:17

Well I love them! And I think they can look sexy too, and husband agrees. I've got a sunflower pair from Lucy and Yak, a pink cord pair, a plain black pair and an orange polka dot pair.

AND I have tattoos that are "meaningful" 😲😲😲😲 No blue hair just at the moment, must book that in to complete my kerayzee look.
