I've just discovered dungarees, I want to buy them ALL

I'm 45, 'too old' for dungarees I expect but I've bought 2 pairs and I love them! They're so comfortable, so practical.

I'm eyeing up summer ones, autumn ones, winter ones. How many pairs is too many? This is all I'd wear now if I could get away with it!

OP posts:
CharlotteLightandDark · 06/05/2024 23:16

I have 2 pairs, a khaki coloured cord pair and a pale denim pair that look like I’m about to do some sort of job with a wrench but I like that!

funnily enough I said to my partner yesterday they must make me look a bit like a giant baby/lesbian mechanic and he said well sort of but I can see they make you happy ☺️

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 06/05/2024 23:14

Proves my point. Most of the women on here wearing them are in their 60s. It’s a bit try hard.

Im 52...ive always worn them. My dress sense has always been a little different but it suits me. Im never going to wear elasticated waistbands or sketchers

spookehtooth · 06/05/2024 23:27

Hah, yes, I discovered the strong feelings about them last year, but someone somewhere thinks everything is shite. So what's a person to do exactly? Whatever they want 😁

Oy mate, I'm still in my 50s for a bit longer, and the whole point is that we are not trying at all. I just want to be comfortable. Having realised far too late that I detest sleeves and anything fitted and too tight necks and being too warm, I decided to dress exclusively for myself.

I dont care if I look like a teletubby, I'm comfortable I'm a bit cooler and that makes me happy.

Gosh! The old dunga certainly brings out some strong opinions.

Firstly, OP, you can’t buy them all because I already have. 😆

Secondly - for anyone who finds them inevitably unsexy, may I refer you to Felicity Kendall in ‘The Good Life’? Often seen looking hot in dungas.

Thirdly - yes, loo visits can occasionally be a challenge. But dungas are comfortable enough to make up for it.

Fourthly - I hereby do not give the shiniest of shits about any of the following: whether people think I look ridiculous in my dungas, too old, too frumpy, too try-hard, clearly insufficiently vigilant about my weight, or just committing the heinous crime of Not Dressing For the Male Gaze. No male has ever gazed, to the best of my knowledge, and if I’ve given them something to gaze at that upsets their fragile sensibilities - good!

Except most women in their 60s don’t look like Kendall in her 20s.

prob with blue hair and tattoos that “tell a story “ 😴

ThePerfectDog · 07/05/2024 06:54

So dungarees are both ‘try hard’ and an indication that someone’s ’given up’ - schrodinger’s dungarees? I can see why you’d struggle with them if you’re a person who thinks that people of a particular age should act or dress in a particular way - I happen to disagree with this. I see people of all shapes, sizes and ages wearing them and most of them look great, even if they don’t if they’re happy it doesn’t matter in the slightest.

I’m really interested to know what clothes someone ‘should’ be wearing in their 50s and 60s, which demonstrates the exact correct level of caring about their appearance including what they weigh.

TheExclusiveSandwich · 07/05/2024 07:02

I think it’s the kind of affected all” look at me. I am kerazee” kind of thing that makes me baulk

the word DUNGAS. Is up there with cardi

BigMandyHarris · 07/05/2024 07:02

My DH chose and bought my first pair for me.
So there you go

ThePerfectDog · 07/05/2024 07:03

I think this might say more about you than anyone else

TheExclusiveSandwich · 07/05/2024 07:09

Well as I said it that’s highly likely.

Maloneyb · 07/05/2024 07:11

In my 30s and LOVE dungarees. Always have.
think there’s nothing wrong with people wearing them at any age but I do think you have to have a certain shape to wear them

i wore them last when i was pregnant and felt like a typical pregnant stereotype 🤣
if i could wear them more i would.

good on you Op

Craftycorvid · 07/05/2024 07:16

What’s wrong with blue hair if someone likes blue hair? What’s wrong with tattoos that tell a story?

Oh and ‘cardi’ - I have quite a few of those! 😆😆😆 I’ll pick one out and wear it today in honour of all those folks disturbed by its name and presence on my aged body. I’ll layer my cardi over my dungas. 😂😂😂 I also have one tattoo and wish to get more. I love playing with clothes and dressing up. Why not? The world’s a bloody bleak place.

Floisme · 07/05/2024 08:09

Well isn't this quite the thread!

I'm glad you've found them op. Clothes that give you pleasure are life enhancing.

Lovemusic82 · 07/05/2024 08:16

Can’t believe how many posts there are arguing about dungarees. Women slagging off each others fashion sense. It’s just clothes and we can wear what ever we like.

I love my dungarees, I get a lot of nice comments when I’m wearing them, I think I look good in them and I feel confident wearing them, I don’t really give a sh#t what other people/women think. I am 42 (look younger), I’m short and a size 10/12, I get sick of wearing boring jeans and tops. I have around 10 pairs of dungarees, mainly run & fly, I have tattoos, sometimes I have funky coloured hair, because that’s my style and I don’t really care if I fit in or not. I would rather look like a children’s entertainer than a plain Jane 😬.

If you want to wear dungarees then wear them, doesn’t mater what age or size you are, it doesn’t mater what others think, it doesn’t mater if your dh/dp finds them flattering or not. Wear what you like.

BigMandyHarris · 07/05/2024 08:21

They just suit some people and not others.

Personally I love them but I don’t go for a classic or chic style as it’s not me, but I wouldn’t knock others who choose to wear loafers, blazers and breton tops

savoycabbage · 07/05/2024 08:22

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 06/05/2024 21:44

That's a sleeveless jumpsuit, not dungarees.
Theses are dungarees www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-hourglass-denim-dungaree-in-mid-blue/prd/205470016

And this is a thread on Style and Beauty on a talk forum.

It’s not a list of dungarees to be given to the police.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 07/05/2024 08:24

Jambats and Run and fly are my favourite the jambats are more nipped in at the waist I also usually wear mine with docs and currently have purple hair. Also don't give a shiny shite about others opinions on my clothing 🤷🏻‍♀️

Berlinlover · 07/05/2024 08:26

Horrendous.

Thatwouldbeme · 07/05/2024 08:31

I make my own using the waves and wild heydays pattern, very easy beginner friendly, it was my first ever clothes sewing I did. I get loads of compliments when I wear them and I'm over 50😁

ByTheSea · 07/05/2024 08:52

I'm 60 short and busty but have three pair now and love them as long as the shirt underneath doesn't roll up. I don't think I'm trying too hard, rather I have no f**ks left to give what anyone else thinks.

Illfollowthesun · 07/05/2024 09:03

My teenage son has just told me “no, please do not….. “ so I think I have to get a pair now!!
I found nice 100% cotton ones on Amazon (that might fall apart) but look really comfortable and are inexpensive.

I really don’t get saying things like too “try hard”. Most posters are saying they love them because they are comfortable. But even if they were trying to be trendy or create a fun look, what’s wrong with that?

Churchview · 07/05/2024 09:04

How can a pair of denim dungarees worn with a t shirt and summer sandals possibly be 'trying too hard', 'look at me or'aren't I crayzee?'? I mean, what could be more simple, practical, comfortable, non-lookatme and easy?

If they were for women who can't control their weight they wouldn't sell them in a range of sizes starting at an 8.

TwilightSkies · 07/05/2024 09:07

Wow 😂😂 you sound like a lovely person

BestIsWest · 07/05/2024 09:07

I have lovely denim ones from Fatface. I look like Keith from the Pottery Throwdown in them. They make me very happy.

TammyOne · 07/05/2024 09:10

Proves my point. Most of the women on here wearing them are in their 60s. It’s a bit try hard.
What would be wrong with being in your 60s exactly?
Oh, but it’s S&B , where some very insecure posters think only fashion worn by very young women is in any way acceptable.
How depressing it must be to actually live in that mindset!
