What would you do with a bunch of Hermes scarves

So, interesting problem to have, but I have inherited around ten Hermes scarves from an old relative. I don't want to sell them, but have no idea what to do with them either. Does anyone wear silk scarves these days?

I hate to keep them in the boxes for the next 50 years to give them to someone, but any idea what else can be done with these

I'd sell any I dislike, and keep the rest as an investment.

Ariadneefron · 29/04/2024 20:08

They normally sell for 150-250 each although I've seen a few for sale for several thousand each. I guess it's up to you if you want to put that kind of money in a box or cut it up but I'd sell them to someone who appreciates them. Yes, there are people who wear silk scarves these days and many of them are young and fashionable. It's a fashion blogger - Emily in Paris thing to wear.

loropianalover · 29/04/2024 18:23

What would I do? I’d box them up, message @loropianalover for her address, and send them first class.

Jokes aside, pick your favourite one or two and have them framed - upstairs and downstairs hallway? Living room, dining room? Does your relative have any living younger relatives that would like one each? You could have them sewn together into a robe, blanket…

Too high maintenance...

I'd be fine with second class 😉

Joking aside, keep a couple back because you don't know how your style will change. Sell the rest and use the money for something by which to remember your loved one is my advice.

CreedMungbean · 29/04/2024 20:35

Frame them, they make beautiful pieces of art to hang on your wall!

Do you remember Emma Forbes from Going Live and Live and Kicking ? (showing my age now).

Her daughter buys them and makes them into some stunning clothes. Her instagram page

Those are beautiful. TBH even though I know Hermes scarves are expensive, I've never got on with scarves (love them on other people) and would far rather have one of those jackets. And I'm in my 50s so unlikely to change now.

radishpatch · 29/04/2024 21:02

Surely your relative would have wanted them to go to another enthusiast or would have wanted you to get enjoyment from them? If you don't get enjoyment from them as scarves, sell them to an enthusiast and get enjoyment via them by spending the proceeds?

rongy · 29/04/2024 21:10

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies I'd also love to see them
@LoraPiano can you post any pics?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 29/04/2024 21:10

What a fabulous inheritance! Some are absolutely gorgeous and others a bit more of an acquired taste.

I would keep the best of them....do you have daughter's or perhaps future DILs, park one each for them?

Frame one that works best with your color scheme.

Less the rest and do something with the funds to honour your relative, or buy something more to your taste with the proceeds.

Ouch

You'd never ask a jeweller to cut up heirloom diamonds because the piece of jewelery they're set in isn't to your taste. They would devalue instantly and never ever be as stunning as the originals.

If you're a scarf person, keep your favourites (which you will wear/display, whatever) and sell or regift the rest. Hermes are heirloom pieces - if you don't wear them there is zero point in just keeping them in a drawer - and no value to you just sitting there. Sell them and buy something just as fabulous that you will wear everyday and remember the person who gave them to you that way, rather than cutting them up!

Meh. Plenty of people have stones reset in a more modern setting. What’s the point of owning something you might never wear. Life is for living and stuff is for wearing.

LondonFox · 29/04/2024 21:41

I'd sell unless I know close family and friends would really love to own one. I'd gift some to them.
A lot of people don't like sacond hand, or that type of scarves so they may just sell themselves.

If you want to give to charity I know British Heart Foundation will note brand and send you thank you note if your donations generate good income (think above 100 or something they let you know). That way you know they were not sold for rags and helped a cause.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 29/04/2024 22:13

Wear them? I wear a Hèrmes scarf most days.

I wear Sarks and Mencer knickers everyday. One of us is living a much more glamorous life than the other 😂

Edit: cheeky buggers sticking a link on the M and the S. I'm changing it!

Sorry but that's horrible. A complete waste of what started off as a beautiful scarf.

Not sure what your point is.

Scarves are made to be worn - not stuck on walls or turned into things like that horrible jacket. Not sure how many I've got - more than a dozen, less than 20.

Bimblesalong · 29/04/2024 22:26

I absolutely adore my Hermes scarf collection and add to it every year. There are many lovely ways to tie the scarves. Such an elegant accessory.

learn how to care for them and wear them. Otherwise you’ll have to dish them out to me. Erm to the mn who have expressed interest.

You could use them on handbag handles? I think they call them Twillys??
I know you said you didn’t want to sell but Hermes prices as they are I would be inclined to sell a few

Edited

They sell small twilleys for that. You can't really wrap a big a scarf around a handle

BresciaBike · 29/04/2024 23:03

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I was musing on the different lives we have 🤷‍♀️

This - ive seen them framed too and they can look amazing!

I was going to say the same - display them as art work. But I'd leave them in tact. They could lose value if you cut them up or sew them together.

An Hermès Twilly is a different type of scarf. It’s long and narrow, almost like a tie, which is why you can tie it around a handbag handle. I’m guessing these are 90cm squares.

Ok , thanks. I wondered if you were being sarky.

I've been caught out by that automatic link creation.

I think it's horrible because the scarf was horrible to begin with

skilpadde · 29/04/2024 23:28

What a spectacular inheritance!

Assuming it's unbecoming to add my name to the list of willing gift recipients, please could I ask that you post photos?

EricHebbornInItaly · 29/04/2024 23:33

Oh my heart, I’ve always wanted a Hermes scarf. What a lovely legacy and bequest.

Enjoy them, store them somewhere clean and dry, but some fresh desiccant bags off Amazon, with protection from moths (pheromone traps) etc (this is a good time of year to put them in a ziplock bag and freeze them to prevent eggs hatching (may grubs hatch and chomp natural fibres).

Can you share some photos, they must be beautiful vintage ones, I’d love to see ☺️

Stopmotion24 · 29/04/2024 23:34

Keep your favourites and auction the rest for charity

bagelsandlox · 29/04/2024 23:35

I bought quite a few Hermes scarves in my 20s and sold most of them on EBay about 5 yrs ago. I got around £300 per scarf, and that was without any of the boxes.
