What would you do with a bunch of Hermes scarves

So, interesting problem to have, but I have inherited around ten Hermes scarves from an old relative. I don't want to sell them, but have no idea what to do with them either. Does anyone wear silk scarves these days?

I hate to keep them in the boxes for the next 50 years to give them to someone, but any idea what else can be done with these

If you wanted to sell them, they might be worth a great deal. I have been looking for a particular Hermes scarf design, in a particular color, for the last few years. I very occasionally see it, but never for less than $600, so haven't yet pulled the trigger.

This is what I was thinking, can they be made into tops, dresses etc?

Yes they could. Have you got a good local seamstress?

Sell them to a vintage specialist. Don’t get then
sewn into something else! Or frame them, they’ll fade.

Pleeeease don't do this. Some of them may well be very valuable and this will destroy their value. They are classics.

If you really, really don't want to keep them, then sell them through a vintage / pre-loved site or even an auction house (NOT a charity shop). Gift a couple to.people you know would appreciate them. But I agree with those who suggested you keep them.

They’re all valuable in the financial sense, but if they’re sentimental and she wants to keep them she might as well create something she’ll get use out of. Hermes scarves aren’t sacred artefacts and are relatively easy to buy/pretty mass produced, she can use them as kitchen rags if she pleases.

EmmaEmerald · 29/04/2024 18:57

If you feel uncomfortable about selling them, you could donate the money to charity?

I realise you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed with MNers wanting to buy...was I first? 😂

@DrJoanAllenby that is stunning, thanks for the pic.

BlackStrayCat · 29/04/2024 18:59

I wear mine as a belt in my old and faded jeans.

Belt is a cool idea!

Isabelle70 · 29/04/2024 19:13

If you don't want to wear them, how about framing them? Do you have any female family members that you could gift to?

doublec · 29/04/2024 19:16

I inherited some from my mother. They're beautiful and couldn't imagine selling them. Initially, I occasionally wore them in lieu of belts when wearing trousers, particularly jeans. And then I got cancer.

The 90cm scarves have proved incredibly useful. I tie/wrap them in many different way to cover my head as I have little hair. They're surprisingly warm during the winter and will continue to wear in this way once my hair regrows. Have also used them as a scarf/cravat under loose knit turtleneck sweaters so you see an inch or two of the scarf peeping out.

Am due a second mastectomy, and as I'm not having a reconstruction, will be knotting a few scarves together to wear as a top on holiday!

So, lots of uses. And if you don't want to sell them, you can always gift them to friends. They're a lovely gift to receive.

AnotherCountryMummy · 29/04/2024 19:17

I would be thrilled if somebody gave me one, absolutely lovely gift.

I'd use some as handbag twillies or wrap around an Alice band to make an interesting hair accessory. Or maybe even tie them in my hair as a bow. Or put them in my car, kind of tied like shoulder shawls round the front seats 😂

Vastlyoverrated · 29/04/2024 19:22

Although floaty scarves aren't massively in fashion right now, they always come around. A colleague of mine had a lovely scarf on, just a neck-tie one, the other day and it really made the outfit. My late teen/early twenties daughters also wear scarves, one goes for a bohemian, hippy vibe and they look great on her, even the floaty ones.

I'd pick the couple you like the best, give a couple away and see how you feel. I wouldn't give away any you genuinely liked, there's always ways to sneak a great scarf into an outfit.

Shangrilalala · 29/04/2024 19:25

I loved them in my 20s and have amassed a lovely collection - all stored away in their orange boxes for now as I’ve dressed in a much more casual way since I stopped working.

I fully intend to adopt a classy ‘grande dame’ style as I age. Or for now, black polo neck, black jeans and a colourful Hermès is a great look for all sorts of occasions.

Agree with others, don’t do anything to them. Store them and when the time is right, you’ll be so glad you did!

mitogoshi · 29/04/2024 19:27

They can be used with many outfits, at a restaurant on Saturday there was a lad in wide leg trousers, waistcoat (no shirt) and a scarf, gorgeous print. Looked stunning as an outfit

HawaiiWake · 29/04/2024 19:30

Frame them like prints. Google this and you can see what others have done and the interior decor styles.

CrushingOnRubies · 29/04/2024 19:35

If any of with your home decor could you frame some of them ??

BloodyAdultDC · 29/04/2024 19:38

MsFaversham · 29/04/2024 16:48

Could you get someone to make something out of them for you?

Ouch

You'd never ask a jeweller to cut up heirloom diamonds because the piece of jewelery they're set in isn't to your taste. They would devalue instantly and never ever be as stunning as the originals.

If you're a scarf person, keep your favourites (which you will wear/display, whatever) and sell or regift the rest. Hermes are heirloom pieces - if you don't wear them there is zero point in just keeping them in a drawer - and no value to you just sitting there. Sell them and buy something just as fabulous that you will wear everyday and remember the person who gave them to you that way, rather than cutting them up!

BotterMon · 29/04/2024 19:40

Oh how wonderful. I often wear a silk scarf with a plain thin sweater. Always wear one round my neck when skiing - they keep you warm and can be pulled up over the face. The French still wear them! Either sell them via a specialist and donate the money to charity or keep them and wear them.
What a lovely problem to have!

unsync · 29/04/2024 19:43

Which ones are they? Before you do anything, you need to do your research. Some of the older ones are really rare and highly valued. I'm happy to ID them if you want.

Please don't chop them up, you can rehome them to collectors if you don't want them. There's also lots of ways to wear them that are not 'old lady'.

Byth · 29/04/2024 19:46

Do you remember Emma Forbes from Going Live and Live and Kicking ? (showing my age now).

Her daughter buys them and makes them into some stunning clothes. Her instagram page

mondaytosunday · 29/04/2024 19:54

I'd sell them! I've seen them at auction and they'd get a good price especially if original boxes.
As you don't want to you could make them ( or have them made) into a quilt or clothing. Frame them?
And yes people do wear scarves!

Brillenbar47 · 29/04/2024 19:58

There are so many ways of using them if you don't want to know around your neck - frame them, use as a belt on jeans, tie onto hanback particularly with a really pared back outfit, use as an evening bag, use one or 2 together tied to makr an evening top.
