Shampoo & conditioner for curly frizzy hair - advice pleeeaassee

moodlumthehoodlum · 01/04/2008 17:51

I'm beginning to look like crazy hair woman.

I have long curly (aka frizzy) hair that if I don't find a remedy for soon will all be chopped off (I might do it tonight with a pair of kitchen scissors such is my desperate need)

I have thrown money at this particular problem, and already tried:

Phillip Kingsley - useless; Redken - makes my head itch; John Frieda - horrible; Waitrose organic - useless.

One of you lovely groomed MN stylistas must be able to help? Or am I getting too old for long hair anyway (I think I know what the response will be here..)

TIA

Ooh great thank HC. Another vote for KMS, and someone I met the other day mentioned the sebastian stuff, so am going to try that.

this might turn out to be expensive....

Another one here - Kerestase Oleo-curl shampoo and conditioner are the best. Not the gel masque, it is shite.
Aussie 3 minute miracle is great conditioner but you can't leave it in. I often use kerestase shampoo, then 3 minute miracle conditioner, rinse that out, blot my hair of excess water, and then put in the kerestase conditioner and leave it in (it isn't meant to be leave in but there you go). Never blow dry unless in a complete crisis and need hair to dry a bit quicker.

For other leave in options the Paul Mitchell "The Conditioner" is great but makes me break out in little whiteheads (doesn't with everyone though), worth a try because it is the best - holds curls together but doesn't feel heavy or producty or greasy - you wouldn't know it was in there.

Otherwise Pantene is quite good (Dry hair shampoo but normal conditioner - the dry conditioner is too heavy and sticky). You can leave that conditioner in as well.

I've never got on with the John Frieda stuff - too producty, too crunchy and obvious - I don't know, it just doesn't work for me.

Used tresemme shampoo once out of necessity and it stripped my hair bare of any semblance of moisture. Took about 3 months to recover. Don't go anywhere near it!

That's all for the moment...

OOOh and never ever brush my hair

Sometimes comb it through wet in the shower but mostly just take my fingers through it. The point is to have ringletty curls not frizz, no?

moodlumthehoodlum · 03/04/2008 12:29

I tried to kick the brushing my hair habit this morning and failed, so just tied it back with an attractive halo of frizz to greet the first day of term.

Am off on a mission to spend money on hair products this afternoon. And a big comb.

Mission successful. I am now the proud owner of..... Aveda be curly - shampoo conditioner and curl enhancer and a big toothed wide comb.

Am poor but hopeful. Thanks for the recommendations all. Will report back.

aye, I have been fighting thick, curly, frizzy hair all me life. Asda "Curly Locks" curl cream though is magic, and very cheap. We had a temp at work a while go who had beautiful, long ringletty curly hair and I asked her what shampoo she used. She said she used whatever was around, but ony washed her hair once a week. This was about 3 years ago. I tried it, and it works! Luckily I live in the countryside and drive to work, so my hair stays fairly clean. Not sure if it woould be a great idea if I lived in town and got a train to work.

MrsMattie · 04/04/2008 15:30

Has anyone mentioned Aveda Be Curly? Use this on DS's ringlets. Fabulous.

hoxtonchick · 04/04/2008 16:57

bated breath moodlum .

moodlumthehoodlum · 04/04/2008 17:27

Yay Yay Yay

Gooooooood Well, better at least. I haven't brushed it, but combed it with my lovely new comb, and I think it looks better. Lovely and shiny. Smells delicious and even better, no itchy head. Still doesn't look amazing, but if I have a decent cut I think that will help a lot.

Thanks wise ones for your advice. I now have an expensive new habit to add to my list.

hoxtonchick · 04/04/2008 18:12

hooray! did you comb when wet? makes a big difference. and get all the frizzy bits cut off .

moodlumthehoodlum · 04/04/2008 18:20

I did comb thru the conditioner and the curl enhancer - is that what I should have done? I used a lovely big comb from Toni & Guy that was only £3.

Dh (when prompted obviously) commented on how it looked better from not brushing.

hoxtonchick · 04/04/2008 18:21

i comb conditioner through, then blot it dry & work products through with my fingers. god knows if that's the 'right' thing to do.

well done dh... will you post pics of your curly hair now?! if you do, i will!

moodlumthehoodlum · 04/04/2008 18:38

I think blotting hair is the way forward - I did make the mistake of vigorously rubbing it dry which kind of undid all the Aveda goodness, but at least I know now.

I might put photos of my curly hair on my currently empty profile! I currently have half of it pinned up, and actually it looks quite good as a just above shoulder length bob.... controversial I know. I'm a bit scared to make my rubbish hair public!!

Bathtime calls..

hoxtonchick · 04/04/2008 18:47

vigorously drying roughs up the hair cuticle. or something. it is kind of logical i guess.......

your hair sounds v. elegant. mine needs cutting, 'tis a funny length. but will try & find a half way decent pic.

onefootinthegravy · 04/04/2008 19:12

I am the queen of this problem !! And have tried evrything going after trying 100's of thing, I use ;-
Shampoo Redken - Smooth down it can be pricey but you only need a little bit goes a long, long way (btw get it on Ebay you can save loads)
Conditioner have tried everything even the most pricey and by far the best is a cheapy ! Herbal Essence Silk n Shine (baby pink bottle) it's really good - I always use a 'wet hair comb' - the one where the wide teeth sort of intertwine to comb it through before rinsing
If my hair is really dry and I have got 10 mins - I get a plastic shower cap ( like the type you get in a hotel) stick it over your hair with the conditioner on and put the hairdryer on warm - the heat intensifies the conditioner - then stick a towel over it and keep it on for a little while while it cools down - I know it sounds mad but it really works !!
If you want a good serum but don't want to pay a fortune Boots 'Expert heat protection taming serum' (in a clear bottle) its really good for the price - think its about £2.50 - I've tried John Frieda, Charles Worthington, Nicky Clarke and even Redkens but this one's better !

CountessDracula · 04/04/2008 19:14

dd has this
I use Toni & Guy curl shampoo and conditioner (you can buy in boots not the one from the salon) in a pink bottle it seems pretty good (but only if you are going for a curly look clearly)

I take it you have tried frizz ease

I haven't tried a leave in conditioner for ages, but when I have done, it has felt a bit unwashed and heavy.

LOL at my hair being elegant. Scrappy, yes, frizzly, yes - elegant - only in my dreams!

Have heard that Bumble and Bumble is good. And I think it smells delicious, which is obviously important

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 04/04/2008 21:22

bumble very good, but ££££ (even more so than aveda ). if you buy one thing from them, make it the conscious curl creme - there are 2 different kinds i think.

this thread is making me realise what a hair products junkie i am .
