Shampoo & conditioner for curly frizzy hair - advice pleeeaassee

I'm beginning to look like crazy hair woman.

I have long curly (aka frizzy) hair that if I don't find a remedy for soon will all be chopped off (I might do it tonight with a pair of kitchen scissors such is my desperate need)

I have thrown money at this particular problem, and already tried:

Phillip Kingsley - useless; Redken - makes my head itch; John Frieda - horrible; Waitrose organic - useless.

One of you lovely groomed MN stylistas must be able to help? Or am I getting too old for long hair anyway (I think I know what the response will be here..)

TIA

I've got thick curly shoulderlength hair with a tendency to frizz .. fully agree with the never brush routine but i have to wash it every day - or spray with water else it looks dreadful!

to my surprise Fructis curl mousse was fab - i bought it in desperation as Frizz-ease was out and it was great - really textured ringletty curls!

when i last had it cut the hairdresser 9new one) suggested blow drying it staight for a change and I let her .... It did feel lovely, really sleek and smooth and I couldn't stop stroking it! wasn't sure about the look though - didn't feel ike 'me' and teh kids hated it.

Part of it is likely to be what your hair is used to, but part will be what your hair will be like whatever you do. I think if you have thick curly hair, the best thing to do is to find out what works for you and then stick to it. I've been using Aussie 3 minute miracle for perhaps 8 - 10 yrs and would not change unless there is a really good reason.

mistlethrush · 02/04/2008 22:45

Wohmum my hairdresser has never ever suggested drying my hair straight! the person doing my makeup for my wedding thought that she might be able to 'tong' it into some semblance of order, but discovered that the first curl started to move out when she was doing the second - so absolutely no hope!

fishie · 02/04/2008 22:48

moodlum i have got fine curly hair which tends to straggle. and i swim and dye it.

my rules:
only ever comb (with conditioner) when wet in shower
do not ever use anything with silicon in (byee frizzease and all the rest)
buy good sharp scissors and chop ends off regularly

hoxtonchick · 02/04/2008 22:49

you should never brush curly hair . i wash mine every day, & comb the conditioner through. i dry it very gently by patting it essentially, then put a ton of products in before diffusing it on a cold setting.

i flit around with products a lot. using frizzease shampoo at the moment which is ok. bumble & bumble or aveda are my favourite expensive choices. or a brand called ouidad from the states.

after washing i use gel then curl cream mixed with wax then mousse.... used to use serum too, but ran out & it hasn't made much difference. i very rarely have frizzy hair actually, the curls are quite regular. though sometimes it feels a bit weighted down with products!

moodlumthehoodlum · 02/04/2008 22:50

Do you use a big comb with wide teeth?

I think I am deffo going to find some Aveda. Have a good cut and then see how I get on.

oooh hoxt i got a ouidad order once it cost me £100 with postage (pre child obvo). and i got taxed on it. that shampoo is so good.

mistlethrush · 02/04/2008 22:51

HC I can't weigh mine down enough. Was looking in the mirror at work and deciding that I needed to get hairdresser to get more layers in as its looking rather wide at the moment!

mistlethrush · 02/04/2008 22:52

Moodlum I have a styling comb from Boots that's really good - very wide teeth. Haven't managed to break the current one yet!

moodlumthehoodlum · 02/04/2008 22:52

what ouidad should i buy. my inlaws live out there so I could start to import

fishie · 02/04/2008 22:54

the aveda curl styling stuff is really good but beware, there are two sorts, one for wet hair and one for dry

merlotmama · 02/04/2008 22:56

I'm with wohmum - have to wash my hair every day or it looks like a bird's nest.

Pantene followed by Bodyshop leave-in conditioner, followed by mousse, dry a little with diffuser, then naturally. Frizzease conditioning cream (called Mum's Brylcreme)if necessary. The latter great - have never found anything better.

Have never tried or wanted to straighten my hair. I think curly hair straightened looks like 'cat's sookins' to use a Scottish expression.

People with curly hair can never look really groomed, IMO, but I love my curls.

fishie · 02/04/2008 22:57

moodlum!! me.

it is so bloody heavy to post, hence impossibly expensive here.

i have got denman detangling comb from boots, really good. the more knotted hair gets the more it tears and rattier it appears. hence regular snipping and lots of conditioning.

merlotmama · 02/04/2008 22:57

...and the only time my hair gets combed is at the hairdressers. I never brush or comb - just run my fingers through.

mistlethrush · 02/04/2008 22:59

I can get my hair into a french plait though... and if I plait it, I can rub the end of the plait and then not bother to put a tie on it if I'm not too worried...!

moodlumthehoodlum · 02/04/2008 23:00

So with the aveda stuff (I'm online now looking), I'll get the shampoo and conditioner, but with the two styling products, which is better? Instinctively I want to go with the one you put on wet, but I spose you could use the other one inbetween washes.

OP posts:
fishie · 02/04/2008 23:01

get the wet one. it has lasted me ages (well about 3 m with 2-3 hairwashes a week)

bosch · 02/04/2008 23:03

I have recently had all my frizzy hair cut off, so won't loiter long but I found that getting very dry ends to my hair made the frizziness worse. I used to put conditioner (any, cheap) on my dry hair at night, it would dry within an hour and then I'd sleep in it and wash it out the next morning with my regular shampoo and conditioner.
Must admit, product wise, I've never found anything (that I could afford) to beat John Frieda - esp frizz ease serum on wet (not towel dried) hair followed up with a mouse or cream, leave to dry naturally and ease out any 'crispiness' with a little finishing cream and NO BRUSHES OR COMBS

moodlumthehoodlum · 02/04/2008 23:05

Thanks . If you buy two products online at aveda during April you get two free samples as well. And I love sample size bottles of anything, so I'll be falling for that particular gimmick.

the be curly styling one is more useful i think. but i've had the little grey one too, & just ignored the stuff about using it on dry hair....

oooh, fishie, ouidad is great. my parents were in the us before xmas so i got fab presents! the conditioner lasted for aaaaaaaaaaaages. will have to check & see which one i had. was in shock about all the different stuff they have for different types of curly hair - apparently we're not freaks .

moodlumthehoodlum · 02/04/2008 23:08

I am on ouidad.com now and deciphering the type of curls I have (apart from frizzy and annoying)

magicfarawaytree · 02/04/2008 23:10

have you considered perming your hair. I know it sounds mad but you can then influence the curl it has. It can often tame the hair. I have a friend with curly hair who swears by KMS products.

hoxtonchick · 02/04/2008 23:13

great shampoo

lovely for leaving in hair, smells scrummy

i bought this randomly & it smelt nice

moodlumthehoodlum · 02/04/2008 23:13

Magic, I haven't, largely because of the fear of looking even more electrified - BTW I love your nickname.
