Shampoo & conditioner for curly frizzy hair - advice pleeeaassee

I'm beginning to look like crazy hair woman.

I have long curly (aka frizzy) hair that if I don't find a remedy for soon will all be chopped off (I might do it tonight with a pair of kitchen scissors such is my desperate need)

I have thrown money at this particular problem, and already tried:

Phillip Kingsley - useless; Redken - makes my head itch; John Frieda - horrible; Waitrose organic - useless.

One of you lovely groomed MN stylistas must be able to help? Or am I getting too old for long hair anyway (I think I know what the response will be here..)

TIA

Herbal Essences (in the reddy-orange) bottle works well on mine. Then I use Charles Worthington straightening balm which makes my curls ringlety and bouncy but not frizzy.

Have just got Tresseme (sp) and that is working really well too.

Everythying else is rubbish.

Aveda- Be Curly Range-shampoo,conditioner and curl enhancer balm.
Pricey but worth it imo.
It's good for sensitive scalps too.
I think it's necessary to have hair trimmed every eight weeks or end up like Crystal Tips.

Am using Tresemme and Aussie 3 minute at the mo... but am waiting to return to Oz to buy a salons worth of Joico Kpak which always works wonders - found nothing as good since...

Thanks Arctic Roll - I will look that out, I didn't realise they did a curly range.

underrated - thanks - I'm going to try the Charles Worthington straightening balm - they do good travel sizes I think, so perfect for trying out.

In a few weeks I'll be qualified to write a codpiece about shampoo for frizzy hair, when I can sit at my lap top with sleek groomed hair. Unless I give up and have it all cut off.

another vote for the Aussie 3 minute frizz control. It's the best conditioner I've used.

I also use the purple frizzease serum for very frizzy hair.

I have long curly hair that is impossibly frizzy unless well managed. I haven't noticed a difference between different shampoos and conditioners, I use anytihng for dry/danaged hair.

What I've found stops the frizz is to only brush hair when wet, never when dry, never ever ever. Also, the boots creme already recommended is good but I use this and it doesn't cause any lankiness. You only need a tiny amount to tame the mane .

If I ran out (that will never happen) I would not leave the house.

OverMyDeadBody-agree about only brushing hair when just washed.
Actually I only comb it (with wide-toothed comb)when still coated in conditioner.

Ooh, glad I found this thread, my (curly)hair is driving me crazy at the moment.
Going to try Boots curl cream tomorrow, thanks!

Yes, I use the Aveda curly creme (have tried the boots one but it made my head itch - bah!) or the frederick fekker glossing creme mixed with serum.

Shampoo wise I hav etried them all, and atm am loving HEADS AND SHOULDERS. It is ace, cheap, smells nice, lovely.

And one thing that makes mine look better is if after I've washed it and put the goo on I twiddle the curls to make them stick together. And I never use a hairdryer. I do straighten occasionally tho.

Oh yes lenny, never use a hairdryer.

My hair does look a bit better if I use a hairdryer, strangely enough. But then you have to be very careful that it doesn't look frizzy and boufonny (IYKWIM) which is a terrible look.

It's expensive but when your hair is a dry, frizzy mophead like mine, worth it - Kerastase products specially for curly hair. It used to be called Elasto Curl, is now called Oleo Curl and is slightly different, but there's a shampoo, conditioner and leave-in curl cream.

Don't hack it off, tame and beautify your curls!

Vintage is that the orange Kerastase one? I think I have tried that and it made my head itch. Was a while ago tho' so I might try it again.

Another one here with curly, touching the shoulder but fine hair. I made a promise/new year resolution to myself to NOT straighten my hair anymore; just accept what I've got etc, etc. The main thing I've learnt is, like others have said, not brush it when dry. Also, when you have washed it, don't towel it dry by rubbing it; apply as little/no heat as possible. Be kind you your curls and they may just start to look all right i.e. smooth and ringletty (sp?) and not candy-floss fluffy aka Crystal Tips!!

OK another voice here... If I use hairdryer, whatever product I've used, I end up worse than crystal tips. Gives you some indication of what I'm working with. Have found the only style that works for me is a layered bob - any longer and its unmanageable, all one length it sticks out too much even when smothered in product, too short and it just sticks out. Ideal hair care routine - wash max. 1x per week (any more and it starts to get out of condition) with a shampoo for dry hair. Then Aussie 3 min miracle left on for at least 3mins. Then, once combed, Paul Mitchel supersculpt. Sometimes use one of the Bedhead ones (Pink, triangular) which is great for adding shine, but not so good on the hold. Then, in the morning I use a styling comb (more like a rake really) and comb through, then run wet hands through my hair - reinvigorates the Paul Mitchel and gets hair to stick together into locks again. Even my hairdresser has bought a special comb to deal with me!

Nice to meet other frizzy, curly women!

I recently tried Unberto Giannini "Flirty Curls Scrunching Jelly" which is brilliant, much better than Frizz Ease, but I can't seem to find it now in the shops - I hope they are still selling it. I have to wet my hair every morning, then put gels/creams on it, and if I get time I twirl a few curls into corkscrew shapes and they seem to stay all day.

Yeah, thats another I do - spray my hair in a morning to get rid of the fluff that occurs in the night - sort of re-knitting it I suppose! I'm getting mine done (highlights and a snip) on Friday - I like the idea of a layed bob. If I grow mine all one length I look like a spanial puppy with big lolloping ears!

This are wise words, ladies, thank you.

But I don't think I could get away with washing only 1x a week, and I need to brush my hair once a day because otherwise it just looks even worse? I like the idea though of putting product on every morning and the wet hands through hair idea.

Saythatagain - do you have highlights all the time? I used to, then grew them out when I stopped working and couldn't afford them anymore! But now I'm wondering if I might have some more done - altho' I had a semi permanent colour after christmas, and I think my hair is in worse condition after that, so I don't want to fork out for more colour if I only end up more frizzy.

MTH I find that brushing adds volume (which is definitely a no no!!!!) and takes out the texture which is what I try to aim at. Mind you, I have very thick hair in addition to the curl which is the problem. TBQH, don't actually need to wash hair 1x per week - if not swimming with ds, can leave it much longer and usually only do it when it starts to get too dry and needs a good condition!

I have very thick hair too. But mine goes greasy at the top by the scalp if I don't wash it every other day? I try and put product only two thirds down, but it always ends up the same.
