Only wear black!

collann · 17/04/2024 11:08

Hi all
As the title says I only wear black clothing, occasionally I wear black and white but is mainly black.
I'm not a goth, as I don't like that kind of music or heavy makeup I just like wearing black.
I have tried to wear colours in the past but always feel like a clown I prefer to blend into the background.
Although my house is full of colour like a little vintage cottage.
Is anyone else the same or am I just weird 😂

You can dress exclusively in black if you like. I doubt anyone can object!

I used to wear very expensive black suits in my former profession (Law, not funerals) so tend to actively avoid buying black now - but it often looks elegant on other people.

Though I cannot stand the ubiquitous, cheap ‘black work trouser’. And it’s astonishing to look down a Tube carriage and see every single man and woman dressed in a short black puffa jacket.

Each to their own.

KateMiskin · 17/04/2024 11:40

Don't you get bored? I guess not. I wouldnt say weird as I do know people who dress only in black. Must get a bit hot in summer? I see the appeal of a Zuckerberg type uniform though. Frees your mind.

Infectiousdisease · 17/04/2024 11:42

But you won't blend in if you wear all black all the time? You'll actually stick out more!

InAMillion · 17/04/2024 11:55

Just add colour accessories like a scarf

Don’t do that. Irredeemably naff.

The most sensible advice I know of for getting out of a black wardrobe rut is to gradually add white. White t shirt, white jeans or denim skirt, white slip dress, white Birkenstocks … All safely under the protection of an oversized black jacket or parka or whatever.

You could try that.

mondaytosunday · 17/04/2024 12:18

My 'uniform' (I always think of Jackie Collins, who said pick your uniform and stick with it - hers was black base layer and blazer, often in her trademark leopard print) is black base layer and a long cardigan in winter or shirt or kimono style jacket in summer. If neutral coloured then I add a colourful scarf. I never wear solid black as it's draining, hence the scarf. And very occasionally I'll wear white instead of the black!
When younger (and far slimmer) I was all about colour, mind you it was the 80s/90s!

londonmummy1966 · 17/04/2024 12:52

I'm similar although I also wear navy and almost always over a white t shirt. I struggle to wear anything pale since I've gone grey as my winter colouring (pale skin and previously dark hair) needs a strong contrast otherwise I look washed out. I do have some skirts which are either red and navy or black and green tartan patterns.

Tessisme · 17/04/2024 13:14

I started wearing all black when I let my hair grow out silver/grey a couple of years ago. All of a sudden black really suited me. But I do tend to get a bit obsessed when I discover something suits me, so I'll probably start easing up on the all black look, when the novelty finally wears off. I wore all black in my teens and into my twenties and had naturally black hair and pale skin, so it was always assumed I was a goth. Not that I minded as I thought it was a cool scene😆

collann · 17/04/2024 14:26

Thank you all for your interesting comments 😊
I do add white dark green and occasionally red but the majority of the time it is all black and I feel quite comfortable and happy in it.
I did try and follow the latest trends when I was younger but never felt comfortable in light colours or bright colours apart from white and also found it quite expensive keeping up with the latest fashions.
I'm also trying to go grey gracefully and find that wearing black can be quite smart
I think it depends on what type of clothing you wear.
Also my tattoos and jewellery are my accessories x

I do love that combo of silver hair and black clothes. Elegant!

snowlady4 · 17/04/2024 18:23

I love people who only wear black. I think its a very stylish look. Like Carla from Coronation Street!
Do you mix it up at all over the Summer though?

ChaoticBag · 17/04/2024 18:25

Yep I really only wear black and some white, with a recent addition of green. And I like a black and white striped top sometimes.

collann · 17/04/2024 18:26

I tend to stick to black dresses, vest tops and shorts in the summer but I have got a couple of black and white patterned kimonos that I wear to feel more feminine

Have you ever tried having your colours done to see what colours actually suit you? It might be more eye opening than you think.

I haven't had my colours done (whatever that is🙈)
But I'm happy wearing black. I just wondered if there was any non goths out there that like wearing all black or just me x

I'm the same. Although just do listen to metal music as eel but I prefer to wear black even at work. I just feel a bit silly in colour. I do occasionally opt for burgundy or khaki.

My house is also a riot of colour!

SalGoodwoman · 17/04/2024 20:11

I used to wear more colour in my twenties and thirties, but I've always been partial to black. Also not a goth.

Now I wear a lovely palette of black, crisp white, navy and grey. If I want colour I will reach for my small stock of shocking pink or cobalt blue, I have a tiny bit of leopard for when I'm feeling brown. Only black, white or silver footwear & bags.

I feel more confident and put together in (mostly) black. I'll wear silver jewellery and occasionally red lipstick to be more dressy.

I absolutely agree that I too feel like a clown in bright colours and floral prints, I like it on other people but definitely would not be able to recognise myself in the mirror if I tried anything like that on.

My home is quite subdued too, I'd lean to a minimalist scandi look if I could.

autumn1610 · 17/04/2024 20:17

Not a goth but love black, I will also always gravitate towards it. I have started buying some neutrals too now. Apart from the odd dusky/pale pink or leopard print anything coloured remains unworn. I just don’t feel comfortable in colour

To me, they all look awful. And the OP is happy in her all black. She doesn't want a jaunty pink horse scarf.

This is tempting. The simplicity of it appeals to me. Having said that, I have to say I get the most compliments when I wear deep pink, deep blue or emerald. I am darker skinned.

stayathomer · 17/04/2024 20:31

I wear pretty much all black too but every so often decide I want a bit of colour and add a colourful cardigan so still all in black technically so not outside comfort zone!!!

I was a goth and never got out of the habit. And as an old goth, I can wear darker jewel tones. Dark green, red, purple, teal. I still default to black.

Every now and then I shock everyone and wear something out of character. But then, the next day, Back to Black.

pholonx · 17/04/2024 22:27

I really love colour/print, but also wear more and more black these days - I have olive skin, hazel eyes and pitch black hair so it sets all my features off. I get so many compliments in black that I naturally gravitate towards it now as a easy go-to to pick me up/when I don't know what to wear, but worry that colour/print is starting to feel out of my comfort zone now!!

lyrapie · 17/04/2024 22:58

Yup, same. Not a goth and also feel clownish in colour and stick to black pretty much all the time. I find it calming. Might go for Summer Black aka navy in the Summer to brighten things up :)
