50+ , what do you do?

Just over 50 now and can no longer ignore the signs of ageing. Keen to know what others do to battle these out? In particular, how do you combat the face and chin? All these loose bits, pigmentation, dark circles and general lack of vitality! What is your go-to treatment, cosmetics, or a piece of make-up you can not imagine without in your 50s? What do you swear by?

Stay fit active and stay in my healthy bmi cardio and weights most days and mix up sports. Dye hair. Keep age appropriate current clothes wise. That’s it.

Nothing except wash face, Nivea at night and a lighter moisturiser in the day. I don't I have pigmentation or dark circles. Don't have wrinkles either.

Hi @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I like Nivea cream too (blue pot) would you mind sharing which face wash and lighter day moisturizer you use? Thank you

UmberMoose · 18/04/2024 15:12

I don't prefer expensive products but good ones which work.
Here is my routine that I follow:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Vanicream moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

Tret is an absolute game changer but its a long game that can take months.

excuse my ignorance, but what is Tret? 😬

Lots of water
lower alcohol
a good night cream on the neck
sun protection
and
Face Yoga - my jowls have improved no end.
I remember someone showing me how to firm up a turkey neck years ago and I scoffed (as you do at 23), but oh my, she was right.

How??

@UmberMoose thanks. Others also mentioned the Sebamed clear facial gel. What is it good for?

Wonderful to have so many comments. Thank you. Just reading all this makes me feel better. I've also used some of the products mentioned here but discovered quite a few ones which I am going to try.

Personally, I like the Loreal Revitalift line. The various products are (strangely) always on some kind of deal. I use some of the serums from the same line also.

Seems that so many on here swear by the 50 SPF. In the summer I use the Loreal day cream with the 25 SPF but maybe it's time to step it up to 50/365 and see what happens!? 50 always felt heavy and sticky for me so recommendations of specific products are welcome. Growing up in a hot country in the 70s, sun damage has been done. I thought Vit C would do the brightening job but I don't think it's working.

I eat well too, mainly vegs. A lot of Veg! But do enjoy a small glass of red wine almost every evening (apparently it's good for your gut).

I don't do any structured exercise but I garden often and other low-impact exercises include me being mostly restless and keeping busy. On holiday I hike a lot and swim. My weight is ok too.

Someone mentioned IPL for the face. Can you elaborate, please? I used IPL for hair removal on my legs in the past which was amazing. What's the face one doing? (assuming not hair removal 🫢)

Tret = tretinoin. It's prescription only in this country, but Skin & Me and a few others sell it. I get mine through Tret World, recommended on another thread on here a while ago.

By the time you notice all the stuff you've listed prevention is no longer an option (and prevention is key). Now you need the big hitters; lazer and resurfacing treatments, botox and what have you. Also you write like a fishing journalist.

I read that at first as a fishing journalist (for a fishing magazine) but yes, it does sound like a content writer fishing for content.

@Hopskiplou I think you mean sex 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 19/04/2024 10:13

I'm 62 and whilst I can't really hide lines or fact my eyes seem to be more watery I do find a good tinted moisturiser daily plus a lot of water and defined brows and a bit of bronzer on cheeks does help me look 'ok' .

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 19/04/2024 12:06

I use Tret and SPF50 religiously and my skin looks great with just very fine lines no wrinkles and it's clear and bright - I'm 50 BUT my jowls give me away and no cream is going to fix them 😩

I'm not keen on the idea of fillers or botox but have no issue with surgery so if I have the money in the future I'd happily get a mini facelift!!

I also feel I could improve the look with face yoga or a guasha tool but I just don't have the time (or inclination?) to add that to my routine and stick with it I'm so busy. Until then, I've noticed that if I smile the jowls improve considerably so I'm working on my resting bitch face...!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 19/04/2024 12:10

OP I buy my Tret when I'm on holiday abroad. About €15 a tube can be got in most pharmacies in Spain/Portugal/Canaries (has to be an actual dispensing pharmacy but you don't need a prescription to buy it) If you use it, start off gently and only apply once every few nights. You MUST use a high SPF on your face though as it makes your skin even more sensitive to the sun. A day cream with an SPF in it isn't going to give you enough protection, you should use a separate SPF and moisturiser. Doesn't have to be expensive and there are tons of threads on here with people recommending SPF for different skin types and budgets. The tret has really made the most amazing difference to my skin, and only I've been using it since September!

Cantonet · 19/04/2024 12:18

I've had Ipl for Rosacea.
It also reverses aging, sun damage, redness & fine lines. It's well worth doing.
I'm 60 & have no lines yet apart from one next to my lip. I do have Jowls & loose skin around my chin though. But I don't think I'm going to go the injectable or filler route. I think faces look strangely frozen but still older & it's easy to go too far. I will carry on with my simple regimen of wearing make up every day & using Rosehip oil at night & Azaleic acid/ SPF during the day.

LoserWinner · 19/04/2024 12:21

Retire, stay fit, get lots of fresh air and eat well - and accept that ageing is part of life.

Take glasses off before looking in mirror

Smile

Good grief yes this - there is a reason our eyesight declines as we age I reckon and it's to shield us from the reality! You can at a push look in the mirror with glasses on in the house in good lighting, you must never ever do it in the car mirror unless it is to help with spotting rogue face hairs to pluck.

aSpanielintheworks · 19/04/2024 12:28

My skin's not bad at 50, I use CeraVe to wash, and Clinique moisturiser- I get that on as soon as possible after washing my face, before it gets properly dry.

The only other thing that ever makes me look in the mirror and think' your skin looks good today' is eight hours sleep.

The problem with threads like this is that like most threads on Style and Beauty, we have no idea what the posters look like.

You wouldn't go up to someone with terrible fashion sense and shocking bad skin and ask for their advice but some of the people commenting will be those people 😹

Actually, I second this

BellsAndFootfalls · 09/05/2024 14:17

I have tried and tried with tret but I never seem to get past the sensitive stage, even with buffering etc etc. If I use it more than twice a week my face is a red, stingy mess.
