50+ , what do you do?

Just over 50 now and can no longer ignore the signs of ageing. Keen to know what others do to battle these out? In particular, how do you combat the face and chin? All these loose bits, pigmentation, dark circles and general lack of vitality! What is your go-to treatment, cosmetics, or a piece of make-up you can not imagine without in your 50s? What do you swear by?

I don’t use expensive products but I do use a sunscreen. Cleanse, tone and moisturise and I use a serum at night. That’s it really.

StridTheKiller · 17/04/2024 07:21

By the time you notice all the stuff you've listed prevention is no longer an option (and prevention is key). Now you need the big hitters; lazer and resurfacing treatments, botox and what have you. Also you write like a fishing journalist.

Girlintheframe · 17/04/2024 07:23

Have a decent skin care routine.
Botox
Good diet
Make up that gives a glow and address what you perceive to be your problem areas.

Zonder · 17/04/2024 07:25

Moisturise and accept that aging is a fact of life - I've always thought getting older is better than the alternative!

This. Also, if you have botox I reckon you'll look 50+, with botox.

useitorlose · 17/04/2024 07:31

I'm 56. I use Olay day and night cream, ensure day cream has SPF, L'Oreal under eye cream, Boots retinol, cleanse with micellar water. No botox, filler etc. and apparently I look early 40s (from a distance, at any rate - magnifying mirrors paint a different picture).

I used to date a plastic surgeon, he told me that the factors influencing ageing were genetics, sun and smoking - two of those we can do something about.

kelsaycobbles · 17/04/2024 07:36

Take glasses off before looking in mirror

Smile

RunnyPaint · 17/04/2024 07:44

@useitorlose, I once heard a plastic surgeon on the radio saying that another thing that ages women is wearing uncomfortable shoes, as the discomfort shows in our faces and that look starts to stick 😁

60andsomething · 17/04/2024 07:46

whenever I am complimented on my skin and asked what products I use, or have used, I point out that no products make any difference at all, I have never put anything but sunscreen on my face, never have and never will

RaininSummer · 17/04/2024 07:47

Moisturise and eat well. Use sunscreen and wear sunhats in summer. Accept you are lucky to get old enough to have these issues.

FrannieGallops · 17/04/2024 07:48

I’m 52. I use good quality skincare only, including retinol and daily SPF. I have a really good facial every 4 weeks.

I have Botox, but only about once a year as the lines I started having it for have almost given up coming back.

Lentilweaver · 17/04/2024 07:56

I use Tret, moisturiser and sunscreen. Nothing else. I don't claim that I look a decade younger but I think I look OK. I have a lot going on in my family, career and side hustle so I have no time to think about it.

IntermittentFarting · 17/04/2024 08:06

Drink lots. Good diet, lots of veg, low sugar. Minimal alcohol. Good moisturizer and EXERCISE!

LateMumma · 17/04/2024 08:11

Tretinoin and a good pigment reducing facial sunscreen - Nivea do an ok one. I also use hado labo gokujyun hyaluronic acid gel and rosehip oil. Vit c was good for getting rid of pigmentation for me, I used superfacialist vit c oil cleanser and then a vit c cream. I found them a bit stripping for long term use though I've also got a nu face and a microneedle that help I think. Would you consider Botox?

Lentilweaver · 17/04/2024 08:14

I also eat well- only veg, almost zero UPF- don't drink and walk a lot. Not sure if any of these have any impact on my face though.

PollySolo · 17/04/2024 08:14

Bag on head? Honestly, I think I look fine. Better in some ways than in my 20s. More definition. I wear expensive clothes and use Vaseline overnight.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 17/04/2024 08:15

Nothing except wash face, Nivea at night and a lighter moisturiser in the day. I don't I have pigmentation or dark circles. Don't have wrinkles either.

elevens24 · 17/04/2024 08:16

I have Botox once her year and a monthly treatment of either hydrafacials, microneeding or chemical peels. I'm currently doing a course of BBL and moxi (laser) and the results have been great for resurfacing and pigmentation. On top of that the usual serums, vit c, night creams and spf's.

I never assume fishing journo as I always get accused of sounding like one on MN and I'm certainly not!!! I think some people just write in that style.

burnttoad · 17/04/2024 08:26

OP, tretinoin, vitamin C, SPF50 365 days of the year (a proper quarter teaspoon not a tiny dab),hat in summer.
I dabble randomly with niacinamide, azelaic acid, hyaluronic acid and other actives with good evidence but really stick with the first list

Profhilo is amazing but it needs to be done every 4 months and it's pricey. Botox twice a year to soften not eradicate lines.

Hopskiplou · 17/04/2024 08:30

Divorce. Mostly, I look like someone who is having the time of her life 🤷‍♀️

LunaNorth · 17/04/2024 08:30

No alcohol.
Sunscreen.
CC cream instead of foundation.
Cream blusher instead of powder.
Botox and fillers. Sorry, but there it is.

lechatnoir · 17/04/2024 08:35

Be interested to hear any practical ideas for the loose neck thing that seemed to appear overnight when I turned 50 Confused. My skin is ok but looks awful after heavy nights or if I'm not drinking enough water.
Daily I use various serums and retinols layered up (most from The Ordinary) then at night I've recently started slathering myself in Cerave moisturising cream (big blue and white pot)- it feels amazing like a great big drink for the skin and I definitely don't look or feel so tight skinned and parched in the morning. It's cheap as chips and I use it all over my body and face would highly recommend.

HullaBallu · 17/04/2024 08:38

SPF, No7 retinol, Vict C serum, decent haircut, regular gym classes (weights/yoga), red lipstick, fresh air (dog walking), sense of proportion. HRT has put a stone on me but it's also restored my brain function so I can see that it's not the be all and end all.

henlake7 · 17/04/2024 08:39

I use BB cream, which is a game changer for me (after a life time of using no make up at all!LOL).
TBH though biggest thing is a total lifestyle overhaul.....diet, exercise, supplements, weight loss. Im going into my 50s looking and feeling better then I have in the last 30 yrs!😁
