50+ , what do you do?

Just over 50 now and can no longer ignore the signs of ageing. Keen to know what others do to battle these out? In particular, how do you combat the face and chin? All these loose bits, pigmentation, dark circles and general lack of vitality! What is your go-to treatment, cosmetics, or a piece of make-up you can not imagine without in your 50s? What do you swear by?

I've just started using skin + me but have only done it for 3 weeks so can't really comment!!

Meadowfinch · 17/04/2024 08:49

I focus on fitness and good posture.

I run 5k twice a week, which has the blood & perspiration flowing through my skin, opening all the pores, keeping it fresh looking.

I do an hour's karate/yoga a week, that maintains my suppleness.

I drink two litres of fluids a day to stay well hydrated, and I aim to eat 30 different fruit & veg a week, to maintain general health.

I wear an SPF moisturiser all the time to protect my face and neck, and I have my hair coloured every six weeks.

Really basic but it seems to work.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/04/2024 08:56

I don't think of it as a battle, I just look after my skin and accept that I'm not going to look like I did 20 years ago.

I use whichever moisturiser is on offer, drink lots of water and always use SPF.

IMHO Botox and fillers age you even more. I'm late 50s and have a relative younger than me who's gone the Botox/fillers route and she looks much older than she is - her face is so hard.

I don't care what anyone says, tweakments don't look good. And they are obvious!

To me, a soft, naturally aging face is beautiful. Just embrace it.

Tret is an absolute game changer but its a long game that can take months.

suki1964 · 17/04/2024 09:13

Good diet and exercise is a must. What is going on inside shows on the outside

I dont bother with sunscreen, sun damage already has happened and where I live we see so little its rare to need it. I do wear sunglasses though to stop from scrinching up my eyes

I use a moisturiser , vit c serum and hyaluronic acid serum

Im 59, developing crows feet, have lines around my mouth and the jaw line had definitely dropped but wth, Im still active and living a good life and Ive lost too many family and friends who never made it to my age

Ageing really is a privilege

This. I have had grandparents live into their hundreds, and they honestly looked beautiful. Soft wrinkles, bright eyes. They looked how they were supposed to look!

I don't use anything expensive or invasive. I use No7. No extra anything. No additional sunscreen, or acids, or Botox, or facials. I wash my face in the shower. I have a slack neck, but that's due to too much sun as a teen, and I had terrible allergies to anything on my neck. My face looks pretty good..... Not many lines, I am slightly overweight, walk every day, eat well. Good genetics help.

ASighMadeOfStone · 17/04/2024 09:15

Vitamin C in the morning
Retinal in the evening
SPF 50 always

Cleanser and moisturizer (both cheap as, and varies as to what's on offer. If skin is feeling dry, Astral and Nivea)

Floisme · 17/04/2024 09:33

I hope to live an annoyingly long life so I've upped my exercise regime, eat more healthily and cut right back on alcohol. (I already didn't smoke.)

Other than that, I recommend focusing on the things you enjoy. For me this means clothes.

If you try and treat this as a battle you will lose.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/04/2024 10:18

Lots of water
lower alcohol
a good night cream on the neck
sun protection
and
Face Yoga - my jowls have improved no end.
I remember someone showing me how to firm up a turkey neck years ago and I scoffed (as you do at 23), but oh my, she was right.

kindletimeisfinetime · 17/04/2024 10:29

@Lentilweaver I will stick with it a while!!

By the time you notice all the stuff you've listed prevention is no longer an option (and prevention is key). Now you need the big hitters; lazer and resurfacing treatments, botox and what have you. Also you write like a fishing journalist.

Took me while to realise this has nothing to do with angling 😂

doubleshotcappuccino · 17/04/2024 10:35

One drink a week gwyneth style. Intermittent fasting, Pilates five times a week

HullaBallu · 17/04/2024 10:36

Ha! I also reading fishing journalist as... someone from the Angling Times. (In my defence there are a lot of copies of Angling Times lying around our house and for all I know there could be a regular ten-page feature on Bankside Beauty.)

suztheobscure · 17/04/2024 12:40

My mum turned 55 last week (not that you would know it) and looks amazing- all my friends comment on how youthful she looks.

She has used sunscreen since her twenties and exercises/eats well etc. She has used retinol for the past couple of years and she thinks that has helped enormously.

I myself use it too for acne (I'm early twenties) but hoping will help my anti age regime when the time comes. I am so happy to finally have clear skin!

We both use Dermatica - discount code below if that helps.

I will be 55; this year, I've has Botox since my mid 30's. I also have some filler and Profhilo. I have ipl a couple times a year. I have worn sunscreen Spf 50 since my 20's . I take Equi London Beauty supplement daily. My skin has always been sensitive so I have to treat it carefully, Dr Barbara Sturm products really suit my skin. I have never smoked and rarely drink alcohol ( a couple of drinks 3 or 4 times a year)..I eat a very good diet, salmon most days for lunch. No sugar( cakes , sweets , biscuits etc), drink lots of water and I maintain a consistent weight of 8 st ( I am 5 '2,)
I also really look after my body skin, I use Clarins body products and oils ( again since my 20's)
I use Orbie hair products, my hair has never been in better condition. I am not though the menopause yet so I don't know how things will be after that.

tastydiner · 17/04/2024 06:44

I don’t use expensive products but I do use a sunscreen. Cleanse, tone and moisturise and I use a serum at night. That’s it really.

thanks @StridTheKiller . I am not a journalist :) and only "finishing" for genuine comments. I decided to post this question as this week was one of the lowest I have experienced in a while. I hate everyone, feel lonely and my face is sagging 😪! I blame it all on the menopause! It definitely comes with strange thoughts and moodiness!

HRT, made a very noticeable improvement.

Lentilweaver · 18/04/2024 00:10

Well, nothing really fixes sagging but a facelift or injectables.

I like @Floisme 's comment that if you treat this like a battle, you will lose. The women in my life live till their mid 90s, so I don't fancy shooting myself full of stuff till then. I will live with the sagging.

Lentilweaver · 18/04/2024 00:11

In my family, not in my life.

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/04/2024 00:15

Morning - Micellar water, serum, sunscreen and moisturiser.

Evening - double cleanse, serum, moisturiser.

Twice a week I use a Vitamin C serum and exfoliating toner.

I have pretty youthful skin at 54.5.

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/04/2024 00:16

Oh and drinks lots of water (2l a day for me)

Be interested to hear any practical ideas for the loose neck thing that seemed to appear overnight when I turned 50 Confused. My skin is ok but looks awful after heavy nights or if I'm not drinking enough water.
Daily I use various serums and retinols layered up (most from The Ordinary) then at night I've recently started slathering myself in Cerave moisturising cream (big blue and white pot)- it feels amazing like a great big drink for the skin and I definitely don't look or feel so tight skinned and parched in the morning. It's cheap as chips and I use it all over my body and face would highly recommend.

I use the cerave too, for my legs and for my face at night (although it does make my legs itch sometimes) . BUT it's £15 a pot, I don't think that's cheap as chips. So it depends on your budget op!

I've done the sunscreen thing for at least the last 15 years and I'm 46 now and look crap.

Massive pores. Crepey neck. Wrinkles.
I exercise a lot, eat a great diet with lots of oily fish and veg, drink litres of water every day. I don't get spots or anything, though I do have excema around my hairline and on my eyelids, so that hasn't helped the general look as I'm always having to use steroid cream.

I think it's luck and genetics. My mum has great skin. Obvs mine was inherited from my dad's side!

That said, a colleague said my skin looked loads better once I started HRT. I can't see any difference myself, but she was adamant.

I think we all get like that at some stage during the menopause

I remember looking in the mirror one day, seeing my mum stare back and me and actually mourned the passing of my youth. It is a shock when you first notice the ageing

I think for me, it was a shock as I certainly didn't feel any different from how I felt in my 30's and I had to come to terms with the fact that I was in my middle years heading into my senior years. If the government hadn't changed the rules on retirement , i would officially be a pensioner this year :) Mind I still get a free bus bus and pensioner discounts at some venues :) So for me there was that adjustment of mourning the passing of my youth but now I really am embracing the next stage of my life and grateful that I am having more life ahead of me

I focus now on keeping as fit, active and healthy as I possibly can. None of my grandparents made old bone, none of my aunts nor uncles, dad - all died early. Mum is still going but she put herself in a chair in her 60's and now spends her days just sitting. She no longer has the strength to be active and is just punching time. I don't want that for me. I love being an active grandparent, I love hiking, I love working. The lines and wrinkles, they just show that Ive had a life that's all
