Grey hair regret

I've been growing out my grey...only now I don't think I like it! I'm so very very reluctant to go back to dying it dark brown (it literally needs roots doing every fortnight)

So, could I dye the whole lot a dark blonde? Obviously this wouldn't show on the remaining dark bits, but would it cover the white parts?

I'm a bit sad to be thinking about doing this as I've grown out over half of my bra-band level hair, but I just can't get used to it!

Oooh I like it, you look great,
Honestly, own it!

Weird white blobs on top are part of a hair band thingy

Maybeicanhelpyou · 12/04/2024 01:04

Yes, it’s obviously a hair band.
Have you tried wearing different/ coloured tops, for a different look? You’re all grey from what I can see

@Maybeicanhelpyou But it feels raccoon like Grin thank you tho

I love it but know that’s not what you asked. I think anything you do will likely add in warmth, that’s fine if it’s what you want but is ultimately why I decided to go grey from my dark brown, none of the other options suited me. I have seen people and hairdressers using demi colours or toners to add a bit / blend greys though.

Maybeicanhelpyou · 12/04/2024 01:06

🤣🤣
I guess you can’t help how you feel.
At least put a temporary 6 week conditioning on it to start with then? Just in case…..

raffle · 12/04/2024 01:06

That's the other thing - it probably requires a wardrobe overhaul, and a re look at my makeup (which is stuck in the 90s so just adds to my old fashioned feels!)

Might be cheaper than colour and roots!
And probably more fun

raffle · 12/04/2024 01:09

@Maybeicanhelpyou what is this temporary 6 week conditioner of which you speak? I'm interested if it means not going back to the dark brown dye!

OP posts:
Maybeicanhelpyou · 12/04/2024 01:11

My hairdresser offers 6 week temporary conditioning colours, so they fade out with shampooing rather than growing out and leaving you with roots. Their coverage on grey is about 50% I think

@BusStopNumber3 I have used a toner (I think that's what it was) to blend in the white, I did like it but it only lasts a couple of washes. It was called Brite something or other. Do you have one you could recommend?

It doesn't look as though you are very grey so going blonde might not be the answer and you could have to have it bleached for that to be successful. Maybe a mix of highlights and lowlights would be an alternative? I used to have naturally very dark brown hair but found my roots were showing about ten days after dyeing the grey so grew it out. It's so liberating not having to colour it. There's still negativity around grey hair, but it usually suits the natural skin tone much better. Tbh we don't look any older than our faces! Your hair looks to have a lovely natural mix of dark and differents shades of grey. But you have options if it's not for you now.

@Maybeicanhelpyou Oohhh, that sounds longer than the tube of temp toner thingy I used. I just hate the hairdressers tho, it's all that time just sitting Blush

You could try having your colours done( for clothes) then try a few things out( not necessarily buying) and see if you feel differently about your hair then. Seems a shame to have spent so long growing it out to be disappointed

raffle · 12/04/2024 01:15

@NigelHarmansNewWife Yeah my temple hair grows at an alarming rate! I used to dye it dark brown and like you say...10 days later the silvers were poking through. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go to the hairdresser aren't I?

Yes it takes a while!

@Maybeicanhelpyou I'm flip flopping so badly Confused Maybe getting colours sorted re clothes and makeup might make me more keen on the greys! I'll look into that before I go slavishly back to the bottle Grin

I felt the same when I "embraced the grey" first time around, at first I liked it, then I hated it cos it wasn't the soft grey I had envisioned . I went a bit off the rails and had every colour known to man put in, having to correct it all by stripping and going brunette again, Im now one cut away from having the soft grey I want

This time around if I get sick of the sight of it, Im going for the toners made for grey - sold in superdrugs etc , sold as semi permanents , 6 weeks, less if you use head and shoulders

I think I should have been a pensioner in the days of a blue rinse :)

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 12/04/2024 01:20

I think it looks gorgeously…. But I agree with a pp maybe not a grey top or a red/orange scarf with your beautiful skin tone

Divebar2021 · 12/04/2024 01:20

My friend was dark brown and changed to quite a light shade of blonde to try and lengthen the time in between hairdresser appointments. I think she can stretch an extra week or two but it hasn’t saved her a huge amount of time / money ( maybe she would disagree ). I don’t think the blonde suits her as much as her natural brown but I would never say anything to her about it. I do like the grey on you…it’s a nice silvery colour.

UpsideLeft · 12/04/2024 01:21

I've just dyed my grey roots for the hundredth time with Clairol nice and easy 8

I think you could try 7CB or 7A/7C

@suki1964 Have you tried any of the Superdrug 6 week jobs? If so (and they covered your white) could you link? Pretty please! You are correct, I'm sick of the silver but might just kick myself long term if I cave Confused

@UpsideLeft does it cover stubborn silver? My grey is so wiry too, it's hard cos it just feels like my Mum's hair stuck on my head Blush
