Grey hair regret

I've been growing out my grey...only now I don't think I like it! I'm so very very reluctant to go back to dying it dark brown (it literally needs roots doing every fortnight)

So, could I dye the whole lot a dark blonde? Obviously this wouldn't show on the remaining dark bits, but would it cover the white parts?

I'm a bit sad to be thinking about doing this as I've grown out over half of my bra-band level hair, but I just can't get used to it!

Gosh sorry I haven’t RTFT but I just got as far as the pic. Your hair is gorgeous!!!!

Trixiefirecracker · 12/04/2024 09:23

I henna mine! Have just started to after many years of not doing it. Leaves hair in great condition and good coverage!

Hopebridge · 12/04/2024 09:25

I tried going blond (dark) I'm the same skin tone and similar to the photos added but found my roots showed worse than being brown. It didn't feel right and missed being brunette.

I use a nice and easy medium brown. I don't have as much grey as you but get more and more weekly. This is a semi and blends better with the grey as creates dimensional colour. I then mix the colour every few weeks to top up my hairline (I get more grey in this annoyingly. This is working well so far. If I could afford the £120 for highlights maintenance maybe I would have continued but would need it every 4 weeks. I stupidly did a root smudge once. Disaster!

You may never have used purple shampoo as you’re naturally a brunette. But I’d really recommend it now for the grey hair. Get a good salon quality one rather than the cheaper ones you get in Boots, TK MAXX is good for salon quality brands.

then put a good dollop on your hair in the shower and comb through, let it sit on your hair for slightly longer then you would do normal shampoo (but not ages as you’ll end up with purple hair) and then wash out and condition as normal.

do that no more than once a week and you’ll find your hair brightens up and the grey will shine.

also if you’ve still got dark ends that haven’t fully grown out yet, I’d bite the bullet and have a good hair cut to get rid of them so it’s more even all over and less of a contrast, you’ll probably feel better about it to at that point.

@raffle

I've been using the Superdrug Colour Effects
https://www.superdrug.com/search/colour%20effects

They don't "block" colour the greys, but they blend them in a bit and soften the look. So instead of harsh Salt and Pepper, it's more multi tonal, and still very natural looking. Also the advantage that you won't get a harsh grow out line.

They're cheap as chips, so why not give it a try? It's like a half way house - embracing the grey, but more softly!

My hair is naturally blonde rather than dark, but they've worked really well for me.

I have (had) very dark hair and stopped dying it 2.5 years ago. I use the Plantur Brown shampoo and conditioner which just takes the edge off the grey and allows it to blend in a little more. It also darkens the ends of my hair that were previously dyed. Next cut will see all remaining dyed hair gone.

Takes slightly longer to wash my hair as I leave the shampoo and conditioner on for 5 minutes each, but it also stops me washing my hair as often which is also a plus.

I've used the superdrug one mentioned just above too. They work well and blend grey nicely for a while, but left a ginger/reddish tinge on my hair after the first wash which I didn't like.

RedRobyn2021 · 12/04/2024 10:11

For what it's worth, I think it looks really nice

Trinity65 · 12/04/2024 10:24

I hear You but I personally think yours looks great. .

Oblomov24 · 12/04/2024 10:25

It looks nice. Why don't you go to the hairdresser and ask for some
White and also some silver bits to be put in, to lift it, give it some definition.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 12/04/2024 10:30

My hair grew in grey after chemo and dying it blonde for over 30 years I was determined to embrace the grey. I was happy with the light silver at my temples but hated the dark steely grey so back to the box blonde but I’m so glad I did, it feels much brighter and more like me

Thatsthewayitisnt · 12/04/2024 10:33

Which box blonde is it please?

Thank you everyone, what a treat to wake up to all these amazing suggestions! I really appreciate it.

@Universalfamily Yes please to a pic of your new hair later Grin

I see a few mentions of my eyebrows, I plucked them into oblivion in the 90s and now they just don't grow. Might have to start another thread about how to deal with them!

I think the colour is great. Get a new haircut to remove all the dye then go and get your makeup done and buy some new products then get some new clothes. Bet you'll feel much happier.

whatsbestforme · 12/04/2024 12:01

I really like your hair especially in that style!

Highlights because then you can just get a T section done after 6 weeks (obviously this time frame varies for each person)
Then a half head the next time and alternate.

Carrotcake93 · 12/04/2024 12:06

If I were you I would use a toner and try to have shiny gray hair. Although it looks very good as is.

ivs · 12/04/2024 12:11

I think you look fantastic

however, if you're not happy, then you're not happy

Have a look at these, you use a small amount in the shower with some conditioner and can build up to different shades (can also mix them)
I'm not sure on the effect on grey/silver, might be more vivid - so will need a test strand but its worth a thought

DONT PAY MORE THAN £13 A TUBE

I like it, two tone grey always look great.
I think that you need a good cut and to part it on the whitest part at the front.

I'm growing mine out and I'm really loving it, if I don't love it in the future I will be playing with artic fox colours. (do a strand test though ) Lots of videos on Youtube of people using it and it washing out after 20 washes.

I use the provoke silver conditioning hair mask linked above. It really shines when the sun hits it. I also oil it weekly and do protein masks.

How on earth do you Henna over grey without going bright orange?? Unless of course that’s the desired effect.

Why would it go bright orange?! 🤔unless you can buy orange henna? There is red, black and various shades of browns…

Rowleywaykid · 12/04/2024 17:43

Your hair looks absolutely gorgeous. It would be criminal to dye it. I’d kill for hair like this. It looks in great condition too.

LizzieSiddal · 12/04/2024 18:12

I grow mine out during Covid and everyone loved it. However at the time it made me feel old so after a year I started dying it again. Another year down the line and I’m so fed up with the constant maintenance of it so am thinking of going get again. I agree with other posters that grey hair needs a good cut plus great clothes so will be embarrassing that next time!

shenandoahvalley · 12/04/2024 18:32

I think we've got it all wrong linking hair colour to age. The better metric would be skin condition, I think. Women can pull off all different hair colours; one colour doesn't automatically mean "young" or "old".

As such, I think the most important factor for hair is the cut. Old women with youthful cuts but their actual hair colour can make you do a double-take. Equally, a young woman with an "old lady" hair cut would be terribly aging.

I've never dyed my grey and white hair: once you start, you can't stop. But I've changed my hairstyles over the years. Nowadays I have a cut I would have probably looked a bit boring in when I was in my 20s. Today, though, because I have white in it, suddenly it looks cool (or so I'm told). It's a darn sight cheaper and a lot lower maintenance!
