Grey hair regret

I've been growing out my grey...only now I don't think I like it! I'm so very very reluctant to go back to dying it dark brown (it literally needs roots doing every fortnight)

So, could I dye the whole lot a dark blonde? Obviously this wouldn't show on the remaining dark bits, but would it cover the white parts?

I'm a bit sad to be thinking about doing this as I've grown out over half of my bra-band level hair, but I just can't get used to it!

I grew out my all over brown dye during Covid and after. Then took a while to decide what next. I didn't want to go back to the all over brown dye which needed constant root retouching.

I also hated the grey. Really ageing.

In the end, my hair colourist convinced me to go for high & lowlights.

Pleased with it. It's not perfect but the best solution in the circumstances.

Still has to be maintained but the grey roots far less noticeable.

@PivotPivotmakingmargaritas I've nothing red or orange, I'll maybe make use of my day off and the last day of the hols and drag the bin lids into town tomorrow for a mooch around the shops 👍🏽

I was a dark blonde and now have my grey (Really grey around the temples, some everywhere else) "blended." On the one hand, it looks really good, and you can't see the grow-out (I go in about every 12 weeks. If I wanted it always perfect, I would probably go in every 8) but it is so much time and expense at the hair-dressers. I have highlights, a smudged root, plus a scandi hair-line, so all the hair around my face is white, so the roots don't show. You can't tell if it is white or very light blond, so it works. But it is so so much effort.

Looking at your skin-tone, going blonde might not be right for you. Even if you have it toned quite cool, quickly it will pull back to warm. And, as you still have a lot of dark, you will probably then have roots, just a different kind of roots. Plus it's kind of hard on your hair, if the hair-dresser isn't super careful.

I would say, either learn to love it (It does look amazing) and balance it with some cool new clothes and some updated make-up, or go back to just a little lighter than your original color (with highlights, perhaps) but cool-toned, but also prepare to have your roots done fortnightly.

As it is now is REALLY lovely. But if you don't love it, change it. Just worried that blonde (particularly blonde that pulls warm) will wash you out and will feel odd if you've always been darker.

@suki1964 Have you tried any of the Superdrug 6 week jobs? If so (and they covered your white) could you link? Pretty please! You are correct, I'm sick of the silver but might just kick myself long term if I cave Confused

I havent yet, as Ive not quite got to 100% grey and still have a bit of a ginger halo of the stripping going on

However my hairdresser was quite helpful with suggesting colour codes from Sallys for toners - not that I took the slightest bit of notice

Silver hair has no colour so it should colour

Caving in for me was a huge mistake. I did go a tad wacky mind and went blue and purple and all sorts. Then I got it toned back and it went green , highlights also went green so I had to strip and go brunette. Thats why this time Im sticking to the silver toners IF I fancy a change

@Ruthietuthie Thank you! You and the others are making me feel a bit better about my premature greyness. I'm 45 so perhaps it's not mega premature but it's so bloody hard to get used to! I don't really understand the warm/cool blonde stuff so I think I'll steer clear like you and others have advised 👍🏽

@suki1964 Don't tell me Green Horror Stories at this time of night! You have convinced me...no crazy colours, just 6 week wonders

Don't hate me but in your photo I thought you were in your 60's

sandgrown · 12/04/2024 01:54

I was dark brown with lots of grey . I now have blonde highlights about every two months . The root growth is not very visible and I love it .

raffle · 12/04/2024 01:55

@UpsideLeft I do not hate you. That would be absurd. I do feel like a 60 year old, aided and abetted by my pass times of choice...bingo and car boot sales Grin

OP posts:

@sandgrown Do you need bleach to get the blonde highlights?

OP posts:
UpsideLeft · 12/04/2024 02:02

You could dye your hair either of the colours I posted below and then if you wanted add a darker toner on top of that if you feel the colour isn't quite you.

I can get away with doing my roots every 2 months

My roots are quite dark and grey now as they years have gone on

I'm a natural dark blonde / light brown but my roots from lack of sun are quite dark

I used to get my hair highlighted but once I had DC I stopped going because it was hard to find the time

I then started dying it a block colour at home which looks great and have carried on ever since

Aswellisnotoneword · 12/04/2024 02:06

I get highlights (blonde) and lowlights (brown) at approximately the same ratio of my grey/brown natural hair, that blends in very nicely. I only need to go every 12-14 weeks, using root spray to eke it out for a couple more.

There's a shade of blonde to suit every colouring, and going grey doesn't necessarily change whether you are cool or warm. You might need more depth of colour/more contrast to liven up your complexion, rather than different colours altogether.

Don't hate me but in your photo I thought you were in your 60's

Oh come on. Look at her forehead and around the eyes (that we can see). Those are the light wrinkles of a woman in her 40s, not 60s.

UpsideLeft · 12/04/2024 02:11

@Aswellisnotoneword

I can't help that that's what I think

I'm 53 and don't have those wrinkles or any for that matter or grey hair so yes that is how it looks with a whole face crossed out

@Aswellisnotoneword Appreciate it, was wondering if I the old Aldi dupes had let me down 🤣

Unlike the earlier poster, I didn't think sixties!!!! I looked at your lovely skin and thick hair and thought you late thirties, early forties.

You could talk to a really good hairdresser if it makes you unhappy. The best way to think about the warm/cool thing is that each of us has an undertone, a tone to our skin, that means that some colors really flatter us, and some don't. So your hair and your undertone need to match. That's why sometimes, people have a hair color and it just makes them look unhealthy or sallow.
If you were to add lots of blonde, because you still have lots of dark hair, your hairdresser would have to use something that lightens. As hair goes from dark brown to blonde, lightened by bleach, the middle-stage can be rather orange toned, which is warm. Even when you have bleached, the hair-dresser might add a toner to blend and make the blonde more cool or ashy, but the toner washes out after a while, so you are again left with too much warm. It can be quite tricky to get a cool-toned blonde (although possible for a good hair-dresser).

Your natural hair-color tends to match your skin-tone. Some really great make-up and a slightly edgier wardrobe and you might feel that the grey is really you. But if you don't, why not dye it? Maybe it's not your time yet? Dye it until, say, 50 and then consider again.
You have to wear your hair every single day, so you should really love it.

UpsideLeft · 12/04/2024 02:13

However what I can tell is that OP appears to be a very beautiful woman regardless of hair colour etc

asquideatingdough · 12/04/2024 02:13

Were you ever blonde as a child? I think unless you have that at least , your skin tone won't look right with blonde hair. And I am naturally dark blonde but have highlights/lowlights twice a year in part to cover my white hair. It is a different tone to the white so you still have the regrowth issue, it's just less noticeable than with dark hair.

BusStopNumber3 · 12/04/2024 02:14

I assumed 40s. Not that it matters! I’ve used a few different ‘glosses’ - most recently was a Loreal I think. The warm and cool thing is whether red warm tones suit you as most hair dyes fade out to a warmer tone. If you tend to suit gold jewellery then you’re likely warm and silver cool (very broadly).

asquideatingdough · 12/04/2024 02:15

I also love seeing women with natural silver/dark hair like yours and you do not look like you are 60 or anywhere close to that!

raffle · 12/04/2024 02:15

Confused @UpsideLeft You say you have grey hair? Then say you have none? I'm glad you have no wrinkles tho, share your skincare routine? Must be fab!

@Aswellisnotoneword, I'm with you!!! Look at the poster's skin. Isn't it a shame we can't all be like @UpsideLeft, so perfectly un-grey and unwrinkled? 🙄@UpsideLeft, I am not sure your personality is as lovely as your visage.

@Ruthietuthie thank you for that explanation re warm/cool, it make sense now 👍🏽

I've been dying my hair for years

It's grey under the dye so yes I have grey hair which I dye blonde otherwise I wouldn't need to dye it Confused

As for the lack of wrinkles I think that's due to wearing foundation every single day of my life since age 14 which has had spf in it since they started adding sof to it

I had a bit of acne as a teen hence wearing foundation which seems to have protected my skin from the sun. I just don't have wrinkles

I do have an excellent skin care routine but no idea how much that contributes which includes tretinoin

raffle · 12/04/2024 02:22

@asquideatingdough Never blonde! Totally dark brown almost black so I guess what you and @Ruthietuthie are saying is DONT TRY IT! Grin thanks, I'll avoid, never imagined myself as blonde so I'll give it the swerve
