The pockets are fake!!!!!!

Ugh, just having a rant. Ordered a bomber jacket from M&S and got it today. Tried it on, it's lovely and comfy and I'm pleased. Go to put my hand in the pocket and it's fake!!!! It even has the inner pocket sewed into it? Why bother? I've attached photos to show.

Whyyyyyyy 😭

When I looked at it online I specifically noted that it had pockets because...why shouldn't woman have pockets? I keep my phone and keys in my winter coat so that I don't always have to rummage around my bag for them.

I'm SO disappointed, have half a mind to return it but I already don't have much choice as I'm plus size.

I've also included photos from the website which specifically have a zoomed in photo on the 'pocket'. Oh and noticed in the description that it's described as having a zip up front, when it's clearly button up. But that I'm not stressed about as I saw it in the photos

They won't be fake, they'll just be stitched closed. Unpick them carefully.

viccat · 08/04/2024 16:57

They are probably just stitched closed as is usual with coats - the stitching is loose and easy to pull off.

TinkerTiger · 08/04/2024 16:58

Oh really? 😂 if so I'll feel both relieved and foolish. I've never seen this before

I've never bought I coat with the pockets stitched shut Blush

Is it not just stitched closed? That used to be quite common. You unpick it. Same as the tacking stitch on coat rear vents that people always forget to undo

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 08/04/2024 16:59

Are you sure you don't just gently have to snip the pockets open? I've had that before with M and S stuff.

Obviously think before doing this if you want to take it back!

thedevilinablackdress · 08/04/2024 16:59

It's to make things sit nicely on hangers

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 08/04/2024 17:01

Try quite firmly trying to pull the pocket open, holding the jacket down on a firm surface. You'll be able to see quite quickly and easily if it's a real pocket or not.

TinkerTiger · 08/04/2024 17:02

Omg I've got pockets 😂

Sorry for my rant, but I'm glad I did because I'd have never known to do this.

Thanks, off I go 🙈

Generally the stitching is to help keep the shape. My mother would never let me unpick the stitching on wool coat pockets, and it did help, especially with patch pockets which would sag with use.

I hope that is the case here, though odd, because it doesn't look like it would affect the line of the jacket

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/04/2024 17:03

Oddly I just had this conversation with DH this morning, I rolled my eyes at him, got out the stitch ripper and it wasn't the normal loose stitches in his jacket, it was totally sewn up in such a way it definitely doesn't unpick.

Makes me itch when I see this … 🤣

Yes you need to unpick.

Streel · 08/04/2024 17:04

I had this with a blazer I bought recently. I was raging at the ‘fake pockets’ until I realised they were sewn shut and I could just unpick it.

Stupid, though, isn’t it? I’d never come across this before.

DreadPirateRobots · 08/04/2024 17:05

Yep, very common for pockets to be stitched closed so that the garment holds its shape better on the hanger. I'm surprised you've never had this before.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 08/04/2024 17:05

I love a story with a happy ending although I do also look forward to people replying "You just need to unpick them" for the next three days.

This makes sense. I can beg forgiveness because I’m not from a cold climate, but I’ve lived here for over 10 years so can’t believe I’ve never come across this before

Awwww Tinker, you gave me a good laugh at how you're so happy you've now got pockets because this happened to me too 🤣 I bought a coat and only realised that I needed to unpick the pockets about two years after I bought it so you're not alone ❤️

I was going to say! There's a pocket! It's just fancy!

Yourethebeerthief · 08/04/2024 17:11

So pleased for you OP. That was a genuine panic.

Boredmum24 · 08/04/2024 17:11
