Tights in spring? Scotland

Chipsahoy · 28/03/2024 20:51

I normally switch to spring type clothes as April approaches. Mostly jeans because it’s too chilly for skirts at the beginning of the month.
However, since moving from a relatively mild part of England to north Scotland, it’s cold the majority of April and often into May. Hell last year it was chilly in July!
Are tights seen as acceptable in spring? Do you dress for the weather or the season?

I love my skirts and dresses so get kinda tired of wearing jeans from April through to summer and often in summer.

I really don't get the MN angst about wearing tights. I think bare legs look odd except with casual dresses in hot weather; and especially odd if it's a formal dress. And even more especially odd when it's cold.

I'm still wearing opaques. When it warms up I'll switch to sheer and if it gets hot I'll consider bare legs.

MaxandMeg · 28/03/2024 20:58

Of course. Blue mottled legs are never a good look.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/03/2024 20:59

North Scotland as in Aberdeen or Inverness or North Scotland as in Orkney or Shetland?

Wear tights, preferably woolly ones. I don't think it ever gets warm enough for bare legs in northern Scotland. And I grew up there.

Exactly. And I can't fathom wearing jeans when you'd prefer to wear a dress or a skirt but can't cope with wearing tights.

I live in jeans and riding boots but if I go out to do shopping etc I wear tights, unless it’s over 20 degrees of course. I use these ones in spring/summer. Autumn winter it’s full on wooly ones. I can’t cope with cold legs.

Yup few up there as well. Tights acceptable all year round. You’ll know if it’s too sunny. People tend to go for opaque or woolly ones. Sheer ones don’t cut it.

Seeingadistance · 28/03/2024 23:47

Tights are acceptable all year round.

If you're very lucky, there might be a day or two when you can venture out without your vest.

Auldspinster · 28/03/2024 23:50

I wear fishnets at this time of year. I'm in Edinburgh and they're surprisingly warm.

That remind me of a time I was in Jenners in the early noughties.

I was browsing in the haberdashery department when two ladies in their sixties came along. They had an air of being on important business.

One of them was showing her pal what had “…rekindled our spark in the bedroom.

She picked up a packet of stockings and pressed them into her pal’s hand saying “high quality fishnets, high quality” whilst looking her dead in the eye.

And off they went to the cash register, heads held high and impressive handbags in the crook of their elbows.

Northern Ireland here, it snowed yesterday. My bare legs are seen only in the three weeks of summer we may get if lucky.

Mind the teens/young girls seem to love the orange legs and short skirts no matter the weather

I havent even thought about the fake tan yet this year, probably wont until June

Lifebeganat50 · 29/03/2024 08:21

I’m in Scotland and dress appropriately for the weather, don’t care what the calendar says

watermelonsugar56 · 29/03/2024 08:49

I’m Scottish and have worn tights in July. Wear the tights 😂❤️ and enjoy the heat!xx

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/03/2024 10:01

Scottish, tights all year round. They're not really a seasonal item here!

Notcontent · 29/03/2024 10:23

Yes, of course it’s fine.

I actually think bare legs look a bit odd when it’s chilly and you are wearing something warm on top. Fine if you are doing outdoorsy things, but the “bare legs with a coat” look looks like you were in a hurry and forgot to finish getting dressed.

I grew up in Scotland and now live in another even more baltic part of Scotland, I hate the feel of tights but my thermal leggings (and vests and tops) are still very easily accessible in my wardrobe. In Scotland it's best to never completely ditch a semi winter wardrobe!

Chipsahoy · 29/03/2024 12:50

Thanks all. I’ll continue to wear my tights!
Far warmer than jeans anyhow. Also thanks for the links to the tights, going to order some.

I live in Scotland and wear tights all year round. I'm 32. My friends are the same.

PensivePeanuts · 29/03/2024 12:54

I’m another one from the Highlands who would wear tights all year round!

I definitely got a shock when I moved to the south of England 🤣

Gettingonmygoat · 29/03/2024 13:34

I am in Southern Scotland now but lived near Inverness for years, every year in April i switch to cropped trousers with with sandals or trainers if it is raining. I am never cold. I only go back into full length trousers on the 1st of October.
If you are cold wear tights ( and a vest)

mydamnfootstuckinthedoor · 29/03/2024 15:27

I have lived in Scotland for my whole life and have never gone bare-legged with a dress! If it's particularly "warm" I might switch to leggings or footless tights!

Mumofoneandone · 29/03/2024 15:52

Couldn't survive without tights!! Do sometimes wear leggings for my extra layer, if tights don't feel quite right with an outfit - also a real dress girl and only occasionally jeans!!

Toottooot · 29/03/2024 17:52

I wear tights all year round - naebody cares if you have tights on in summer!

CreateYourOwnUsername · 29/03/2024 17:56

Definitely wear the tights! I used to live in a Highland city and honestly gave up on dresses which made me sad too as I do enjoy dresses. Even in the home counties it isn't dress weather for me yet tbh, even with tights! I just get cold, even with merino tights on. I find jeans or fleece lined leggings so much warmer for some reason
