Mango does great, well cut clothes.

DSD9472 · 24/03/2024 23:36

Budget? Size?

brainsbrains · 24/03/2024 23:42

Size 14

No budget limit

I also need a little head piece with a net

you've not mentioned your age but Hobbs does classic funeral suitable wear and fascinators.
black or navy dress on Ted Baker or L.K. Bennet.
dark shoes and a wallet on a chain.

DSD9472 · 25/03/2024 00:20

John Lewis or Hobbs

BranchGold · 25/03/2024 00:26

A black midi dress, filter on somewhere like John Lewis or marks and Spencer by colour will be fine. No cleavage, length not too important with black opaque tights.

I think unless you’re a chief mourner a net head piece would be overkill/look at me.

I wore this to the most recent funeral I attended. I felt nice in it though did add a camisole under to avoid being too booby. It's in the sale now and a real bargain at sale price. I'm a size 14 as well and particularly liked the sleeves as they felt flattering. I hope the funeral you're attending goes as peacefully as it can and that your loved one rests in peace Flowers

@munchmagic Did you not think the mini skirt was rather short for funeral attire?

No. But I'm short so it didn't sit like a mini skirt on me anyway.

This Ghost dress is lovely, I wore it for my husband's funeral.

Funeral attire

Is there a dress code? I would suggest that if you're over 40 and really want to look seriously classy at a traditional British funeral in April in the UK then you need long sleeves, knee length or longer, and no hint of cleavage. Wear with a black coat and smart shoes or boots with a medium heel. High heels are impractical for walking across grass to the graveside.

You need a hat, not a fascinator, for a serious funeral look. See photos of the Camilla, Kate and the royals at the Queen's funeral to get an idea of the look. Fascinators are for fun events such as weddings, not funerals.

For something classicly classy — Kristen Scott Thomas rather Mob widow — try this

and a couple of other options from Me&Em.

Or the Fold: they have quite a lot of choice in dark navy, which should be acceptable for a formal funeral unless we're talking very grand.:

Sorry to be nosy OP, and feel free to ignore if this is too personal a question, but whose funeral are you attending or what is the situation such that you feel the need to “dress to the nines”? Of all the requests for help with funeral attire on this board, I have never seen such a request. Mostly people want help on looking appropriate and smart, but not glamorous per se, as your post suggests.

As I say, don’t reply if that’s too personal.

munchmagic · 25/03/2024 13:23

@pearpporridge with all due respect, who is giving that much attention to what anyone else wears to a funeral? I am mid-40s and wore the dress I shared above. I couldn't tell you what anyone else wore at all, and if anything I'd say wearing a hat could be seen as OTT at any age. I'd say wear what is comfortable and in-keeping with your normal style as long as it's respectable and not super glitzy. Anything that doesn't draw attention to the mourner is generally a good rule of thumb, keeping the day about the person not the congregation's fashion choices. I realise you weren't suggesting it be a fashion parade of course, I'm just on a ramble now.

This is what the OP said:
I want to be classy, stylish & dress to the nines yet simple.

I gave my response to that request, focussing on the classy yet simple aspects. The OP will have her own reasons for wanting to look classy, stylish and very 'dressed'. Perhaps it's a very smart funeral. Perhaps she wants to leave everyone thinking 'There's a well-dressed woman.' Who knows?

The dresses I linked to are all classy and simple as requested. IMO yours didn't fit that profile: I'm sure you looked lovely in it but above-the-knee dresses for people over 40 at funerals is not what would widely be considered as classy. Neither is a fascinator. Hats for funerals, particularly at this time of year: and a bit OTT (dressed to the nines, classy) is what the OP asked for.

How you can honestly say 'Anything that doesn't draw attention to the mourner is generally a good rule of thumb, keeping the day about the person not the congregation's fashion choices' and then propose that she wears a dress with a short skirt and a very deep, cleavage exposing neckline I don't know. None of the dresses I proposed were anywhere near as eye-catching or revealing as yours!
