Evening everyone. I'm starting this new thread at a bit of a sad time, and I know we're all thinking of Kate and her family. Let's hope that as we continue in our lighthearted way, good news arrives for her, and others who are in a similar situation, either themselves or loved ones.🌷

I think I read in one of her biographies that previous fashions had suited her much more - that first pic Serenster’s posted makes it very clear!

Bertie wrote about how well she’d done a meet and greet shortly after their marriage and that she knew exactly what to say to everyone and how wonderful she was. A little bias, undoubtedly but she does seem to have had the knack of charm and tact from the off. She had a very happy loving childhood which seems to have been absolutely key. She told Bertie if she died he wasn’t to raise their daughters the way George V had raised his sons as they all disliked him. He seems to have been quite unpleasant as a parent.

Maireas · 27/04/2024 14:47

I think also Elizabeth understood how damaged Bertie was, and how critical a happy family life is. Bertie did refer to himself, Elizabeth and the girls as "We Four", which is sweet and indicates closeness.

Yes she caused a great stir in France with her all-white mourning wardrobe (which was such an inspired idea). They must've thought her quite chic or else I don't think they would have given her high praise.

On a side note I've always thought that Wallis' nasty/demeaning/dismissive ways of referring to Elizabeth was about much more than just her looks or fashion sense and actually belied the sort of envy that bitter people often feel toward those they can tell are happier and more charming/better liked by others.

Yes they were a little unit of 4, weren't they. I think she definitely was his rock.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 27/04/2024 15:46

Ahem I think a torque/torc is a necklace

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torc

and Q Mary wore toques:

Maireas · 27/04/2024 15:49

Interesting, @MmePoppySeedDefage !
I have that in a book about Queen Mary! Maybe a typo, although I have seen Tudor headdresses called the same.
Maybe they're all toques!

I don’t think it was just Wallis - allegedly Princess Marina looked down on her too.

I’ve heard that George V said he was terrified of his father, his father was terrified of his father and he’d be damned if his children weren’t terrified of him! Not exactly the healthiest attitude towards child-rearing but again, different times.

Maireas · 27/04/2024 16:01

Oh Princess Marina was such a snob! She was sorely disappointed in the choice of spouses of Edward and Alexandra - she eyed up European royalty for both!
I think she may have been pleased with Michael's choice, though.

Who wore an all white mourning wardrobe in France @AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras ?

The Queen Mother, in 1938 when she had to grapple with a very important state visit to France just after her mother had died. Norman hartnell pivoted and remade an entire wardrobe for the tour in white rather than colours, to reflect the fact that socially she was expected to be in mourning.

The White Wardrobe - Royalty Magazine

The pre-war year 1938 proved to be a defining moment for Queen Elizabeth in her role as consort to King George VI. Late 1930s Europe was clearly heading for war and the monarch needed to act as focal point for national unity. With public opinion strong...

I'd have had to dress like Queen Mary, basically Edwardian until 1953. With a torque and seven diamond necklaces.

My great granny appeared to do just that (less the diamonds). I was admiring her Edwardian/ Mary Poppins style in the photo when I realised it was her with her grandchildren, including the youngest one who was born in '49.

LadyEloise1 · 27/04/2024 18:03

Thank you @Serenster for the explanation.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 27/04/2024 18:10

Yeah sorry, wasn't very clear there!

Anne at Hinchinbrooke Hospital, visiting the maternity unit. She's wearing a dark coat with a patterned shawl, but I can't see much detail. The new parents look pleased to see her, or they could just be a bit zonked!

Nice picture! Love the russet and greens.

Yes lovely colours. More autumnal than spring but perfect for the weather we and presumably they have been having.

It appears the youngest daughter Ariane is now taller than Alexia. The middle daughter seems quite petite amongst all her tall family.

Choux · 27/04/2024 19:48

Scratch the petite bit. Now I've looked again she's only a couple of inches shorter than the others. It's more that her younger sister is now taller than her. But it's the same in Spain.

KillingMeDeftIy · 27/04/2024 19:50

Just judging from that photo I’d say the youngest daughter is the most like Max personality-wise. Amalia always looks very self-conscious and the middle daughter always gives the impression that there are other places she’d rather be!

Maireas · 27/04/2024 19:55

Poor Amalia. True about her sisters!

Willem always looks besotted by Max.
Hard to believe their girls are 20, 18 and 17.
