Who actually wears Cabbagees & Roses?

*please excuse the typo in the title!

Newbie here. I'm from the US but love British style and follow British fashion and culture. There's one question to which I can't seem to find the answer - who is actually wearing Cabbages & Roses clothing?

I've really loved Cabbages & Roses lately, but few in the US seems to even be aware of this brand. I know it's a very small brand. I'm also aware that it is not "in style" or even very practical. It would be considered really "out-there" in the US.

My question is - is this brand something that is actually worn by British women? If so, who is actually wearing this brand? Is it 25 year old "Fashionistas", "Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs?"
Rich middle aged women? Younger girls with good jobs and large available balances on their credit cards? Mom types?

Have you ever seen someone wearing one of their signature flowy/billowy dresses in public? What type of person were they? How would you describe them?

Thank you for any insight!

It reminds me of the early days of Laura Ashley, I used to float around the office dressed like a 12th Century milkmaid. Never seen anyone in the wild actually wearing C an R stuff.

Floisme · 19/03/2024 18:16

I've got a C&R wool jacket that I stalked a couple of years ago until it came down to £150 - about 60% off. I'm a 67 year-old city loving pensioner.

The brand was recommended to me on this board so I'm confident there are other wearers too.

Dresses aren't my thing any more although as it happens, I still have a Laura Ashley dress, with the 'Made in Wales' label that I bought for my 18th.

I used to wear it a bit as I had a few pieces I'd bought in sales or second hand, fairly 'normal' bits - knitwear and shirts and a Breton stripe top. I admired the coats and smocks and trousers but didn't have the lifestyle or budget for them.

These days they seem to have gone more expensive and more niche and I haven't liked the fabrics they're using very much. To me they've lost their style edge (Edwardian art student/Lady Chatterly borrowing Mellors's shirt and waistcoat) and have become a bit 'prep school mummy going to the Christmas carol concert', but it could be me that's changed rather than C&R!

Oh dear … If only I hadn’t been determined to finish the dregs of wine left over from the weekend, I might remember which BBC news programme I was watching yesterday which featured an authority on something or other - wearing an extremely fetching printed dress that could have been Cabbages & Roses or something a tad a more expensive. I couldn’t really tell you her age, but she was the best dressed person on screen all evening.

I would happily have worn C&R during the 90s, when my life was neatly divided between expensive black suits on weekdays and Droopy & Browns at weekends - but it wouldn’t really work for me now.

London, to be honest! Wouldn't be weird here!

You’re better off with American fashion. British fashion is hit or miss and can often be frumpy.

PorpoiseWithPurpose · 19/03/2024 20:49

Peak frump

BoringBoris · 19/03/2024 20:57

Some of it isnt frump- the red dresses they had a couple of years ago are amazing

DietrichandDiMaggio · 19/03/2024 20:58

I don't think most people in this country have heard of them, never mind in the US.
As for who would wear them, definitely not 25 year old fashionistas, though I'm not sure who would either.

mynameiscalypso · 19/03/2024 20:59

Not the kind of thing I would wear at all and I can't think of anyone I know who would other than some of the 'glam' women I know in their 70s and 80s. They would look utterly ridiculous on me and are, I think, very expensive for what they are.

They are amazing close up- the amount of fabric in some is impressive.

I was looking at C+R website only
today. They do good sales but it seems very overpriced, everything is made in China and it’s not always 100% wool etc.

Blessed be the fruit!

Floisme · 19/03/2024 21:18

But surprised to hear 'made in China' comments. I don't know about their dresses but my jacket's 100% Lambswool and made in the UK. Bought it 2 years ago.

😂

mynameiscalypso · 19/03/2024 21:26

Yeah, I think it's just a few of their jumpers and some of their cashmere that's made in China

I refer to it as Amish Chic.

mintbiscuit · 19/03/2024 21:29

Fuck me. Just looked at website. Please tell me who is buying that?!

ZenNudist · 19/03/2024 21:30

Never heard of it but looks awful

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 19/03/2024 22:10

Me. I'm 64. I have a couple of dresses and the most beautiful navy drill full length coat which looks like something out of Jane Austen.

This is one of the dresses.

The pieces I've got are all made in the UK.

The black and white dress and the Jane Austen coat get compliments every time I wear them.

Telomeres · 19/03/2024 22:41

First time I've heard of it and, good god, looking at the website now I know why. It's exactly the opposite to anything I would choose to wear.
