Who actually wears Cabbagees & Roses?

*please excuse the typo in the title!

Newbie here. I'm from the US but love British style and follow British fashion and culture. There's one question to which I can't seem to find the answer - who is actually wearing Cabbages & Roses clothing?

I've really loved Cabbages & Roses lately, but few in the US seems to even be aware of this brand. I know it's a very small brand. I'm also aware that it is not "in style" or even very practical. It would be considered really "out-there" in the US.

My question is - is this brand something that is actually worn by British women? If so, who is actually wearing this brand? Is it 25 year old "Fashionistas", "Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs?"
Rich middle aged women? Younger girls with good jobs and large available balances on their credit cards? Mom types?

Have you ever seen someone wearing one of their signature flowy/billowy dresses in public? What type of person were they? How would you describe them?

Thank you for any insight!

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I love how the Starlight blurb says its ‘soon to be iconic’. Gosh. If that doesn’t make you want to buy what will!

Batsheva seems about the price C&R was pre pandemic. Lovely fabrics.

I just saw this and realised I’m wearing an old pair of C and R trousers with a motheaten Sonic Youth T-shirt. 😀

That's a vibe 😎

ThePoshUns · 20/03/2024 22:25

Never heard of this brand

OnHerSolidFoundations · 20/03/2024 22:28

I do sort of see the appeal in that it's not sexualised in anyway. The dresses remind me of outfits my mother would pick for me in the 80s as a small child. Maybe there's some joy in all of that.

You know I’ve never thought about it but that would explain a lot!

I guess that’s why I also love Molly Goddard and Minju Kim if we can talk fashion shows rather than shopping.

I think the vibe is North London prep school mums but only when visiting their second home in Aldeburgh over May/June half term.

They do say “dress for the life you want…..”

I’m a 53 year old done-with-kids sheep farmer and sometime dressmaker but if I could be a 34 year old North London prep school mum who divides my time between town and country?? YES PLEASE.

Hello, I wear Cabbages and Roses.

I’m 53 (so old enough not to care what people think of the way I dress) and live with my husband on a sheep farm in the Scottish Highlands. I’m short and dumpy and live quite a traditional working class country life, no children.

I loved C&R from 2000 when they started up but couldn’t afford it. I sew so I tried making dupes but it never worked because the fabrics they use are really what makes C&R what it is.

In 2020 the pandemic made me think ‘fuck it, life’s too short to only own clothes I hate (jeans and t shirts) so I sold an absolute ton of my old stuff during the eBay boom that was happening at the time and spent the money (about £10,000) on C&R over the next three years or so.

I’ve calmed down now but don’t regret a thing. They’re beautiful and I’m glad I got them when I did because since the founder (and head designer) of the company died last year the styles have become too extreme for me. I love a big tiered dress with a pie crust collar but even I can’t bring myself to wear a yoke seam above the bustline.

I mostly wear the knitwear and wool wideleg trousers, then the tiered dresses and coats. I have a few very special pieces that are pretty unwearable, so I just go and stroke them.

Being a dressmaker I’m back to trying to make my own stuff now as the prices have gone out of my range this season. If all goes well though I’m planning on still buying the odd piece once a year or so.

For those wondering, every garment I have that is sewn is made in England, with the plain knitwear made in China and the fairisle knitwear made here in Scotland by JC Rennie. They haven’t done it this year though.

Edited

Oh you've done so well @OooScotland the quality and designs were glorious then! I wished they would keep a core archive collection going, the new stuff is not as good at all. RIP Christina Strutt 💓

Oh me too. If I’m honest I think its all going to be downhill from here. No offence meant to Violet at all, its just always such a difficult situation when a designer passes away.

The whole three years was spent collecting very carefully from different sources, I knew what I wanted - didn’t just buy loads new from those years.

So there’s a fairisle slipover, one of the early ‘patch’ jackets, a blackwatch tartan ‘Faversham’ skirt (see picture), a navy ‘Howard’ coat, the much sought after ‘swirl’ coat from 2016…a blue gingham Peggy pocket dress, a Bunty from 2021 and so on. After 20 years of wanting these specific items I hoped for an archive collection that would perhaps be worthy of auctioning as a whole one day.

There were a few things that seem to have got away but I’ll keep looking. If anyone has a brown cord ‘Kilty’ coat from 2020 you want to sell, you know where to come! 🫣

Who actually wears Cabbagees & Roses?
RoberttPostesChild · 21/03/2024 00:20

Yes! The Kilty coat! Cult! I have the Athena which I love but I really want a Kilty or a Howard. I used spend too much time on the website and swoon and swoon and swoon, especially the winter collections! Always something fresh and different but just right. Exquisite quality. Durable. I decided I was not looking for/shopping for clothes anymore, I'd just save a buy C&R and wear them for ever. That and Penelope Chilvers, done. Now C&R is different and PC don't do half sizes anymore, damn.

Perhaps, but they're not entirely asexual. There's a hint of Nastassja Kinski's Tess and the Flake girls in the poppy field, the wildflower field and the gypsy caravan.

Floisme · 21/03/2024 07:40

Disappointing to hear it might be going downhill. I'm wishing now I'd paid more attention to them a couple of years ago when I was still working and had more cash to stock up. Is the new designer taking things in a different direction or is it the quality and the detail that's in decline?

Floisme · 21/03/2024 08:28

Sorry I think you probably answered that question upthread @OooScotland - it's a more extreme look and no longer all made in the UK?

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 20/03/2024 22:00

Hmm, sits back and contemplates Batsheva being the affordable option 😲

I'd vote Aligne as the less flowery and more affordable option

Oooh thanks @NerdWhoEatsMedlar ! I've never heard of Aligne.
Am also loving the older model with the long grey hair!

HothouseFlower · 21/03/2024 10:05

Some fascinating posts on this thread!
The ivory and black tartan from winter 2021 was stunning. Traditional and modern at the same time, in several dress lengths and a coat 😍
In fact, the whole winter 2021 collection was gorgeous

Love this thread. Absolutely agree with @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle above, re: the aesthetic. There was a definite, but quite niche, trend for this kind of thing in the mid-90s too. I actually think even Topshop got in on the act - I remember buying oversized cable-knit chenille jumpers, lace up chunky boots, and one of those tartan-print wrap skits that used to blow open unless you pinned them halfway down. Another great example of it is the Rowan knitting pattern books featuring a very young Kate Moss (see pic, I hope it's worked.) I thought this was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen, at the time.

This takes me back. In the mid-late 90s I used to wear sarongs with jumpers and DMs with rainbow laces.

Can I just say you all write beautifully? Especially @PaeoniaPlease @OooScotland and @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

That is one of the rare photos I've seen of Kate Moss where I've thought "I like that look"

She has a beautiful face but the heroin chic/ skinny jeans/ rock chick stuff leaves me cold.

localnotail · 21/03/2024 14:18

Never heard of this brand and never seen anyone dressed like this in real life. I'd imagine this would be a suitable look for an extravagant Japanese fashion student.

Some of their stuff looks generic and maybe one item like just pants or top on their own would not be noticeable but the whole "look" as shown on their website is hideous and weird.

"Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs? - did you make these up?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/03/2024 14:38

Or a 54 year old sheep farmer or a 64 year old solicitor.

Floisme · 21/03/2024 14:49

Here's a pic of my jacket, very wearable, nothing outlandish but with an interesting asymmetric shape front and back.

There's also a detachable tulle frill that fastens to the back for a kind of bustle effect that would take you from work to wedding.

And a beautiful lining.

I've worn it loads and the only thing I'd mark it down for is that there's no inside pocket.

Why do some people feel the need to add such negative pointless comments to a thread? OK, so it's not your thing. Move along!

This is such an upbeat, interesting and cheerful thread otherwise.
