Who actually wears Cabbagees & Roses?

*please excuse the typo in the title!

Newbie here. I'm from the US but love British style and follow British fashion and culture. There's one question to which I can't seem to find the answer - who is actually wearing Cabbages & Roses clothing?

I've really loved Cabbages & Roses lately, but few in the US seems to even be aware of this brand. I know it's a very small brand. I'm also aware that it is not "in style" or even very practical. It would be considered really "out-there" in the US.

My question is - is this brand something that is actually worn by British women? If so, who is actually wearing this brand? Is it 25 year old "Fashionistas", "Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs?"
Rich middle aged women? Younger girls with good jobs and large available balances on their credit cards? Mom types?

Have you ever seen someone wearing one of their signature flowy/billowy dresses in public? What type of person were they? How would you describe them?

Thank you for any insight!

Oh wow, that lining is wonderful!

It truly is!

And the asymmetry is a delight to the eye.

Have you worn it with the detachable bustle, @Floisme? (One of the most shameful failures of my life was the reckless abandoning of a floor length red canvas Dries van Noten skirt with a bustle you could pin up or let down. Circa 1998/9.)

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/03/2024 15:32

The lining is amazing. My black and white dress has it too.

Floisme · 21/03/2024 14:49

Here's a pic of my jacket, very wearable, nothing outlandish but with an interesting asymmetric shape front and back.

There's also a detachable tulle frill that fastens to the back for a kind of bustle effect that would take you from work to wedding.

And a beautiful lining.

I've worn it loads and the only thing I'd mark it down for is that there's no inside pocket.

Beautiful jacket.

MissandeiofNaath · 21/03/2024 15:55

That is a lovely jacket. Their coats appeal to me. Though they wouldn't fit with my life. ( If I was actually Missandei, they would!).

Well I just love everything about this thread so thanks to all. @PaeoniaPlease I would love to hear the reaction from your fellow townspeople when you wear this out and about!

I'm in SF and still don't see a lot of 'fashion' - it's either all athleisure or of course the naked folks. So I reckon you'd still raise eyebrows even in a city Grin I love clothes but don't tend to be very bold so you are inspiring me to be a bit braver in my choices.

I'll definitely update everyone on the reaction of the townsfolk. to be honest, I never expected this kind of wonderful thread to emerge from my question and I have SO much confidence now about liking these types of styles.

@noodlezoodle , I'm surprised that in SF, you don't see more fashion. I used to travel there frequently when I worked and it had a very unique vibe, and lots of cool fashion people. This was of course, pre-covid. San Francisco is one of my top cities in the US. A must-see for those who may be interested in traveling here.

On a serious fashion note, it appears as though Aldi is now in the fashion business. They have declared that anyone wearing their "fashion" is Best-Dressed! So, I don't think any of us on this thread have a chance now.

This, of course puts me at tremendous ease. If people are seriously willing to wear Aldi branded sweatshirts in public, any and all "fashion" standards have gone out the window.

This is one of the most awful dresses I've ever seen. Nobody could look good in this.

So don't buy it and don't wear it then! Simple!

HothouseFlower · 21/03/2024 18:19

@PaeoniaPlease That's so funny you have Aldi fashion over there too! In the UK we also have Lidl fashion and, possibly the worst option, Greggs fashion - which is a sausage roll and sandwich shop on every British high street!

Give me that flowery nightie upthread any day!

noodlezoodle · 21/03/2024 18:26

@PaeoniaPlease I think we just haven't recovered from the Covid sweatpants phase. Or possibly I'm just hanging out in the wrong places!

HAHA! Thank you for the link and laugh!

If Greggs is a sausage roll shop, I think they are on the right track with those mens underpants! 😂

In your opinion. I like it.

Floisme · 22/03/2024 09:19

Have you worn it with the detachable bustle, @Floisme?

Only once or twice @BlossomBlossomBlossom, it really needs a great big long, pouffy skirt to show it off properly! Day to day I wear it without and I love how at first sight it's just a nice but fairly plain, tailored wool jacket and then the more you look, the more detail you see. Someone put a lot of thought into it.

If I'd realised at the time how few copies they produce I might not have been quite so hard nosed in tracking it through the sales. But I held out as it went from 30% off to 60%, briefly thought I'd lost it but then pounced when a last minute return came up.

And as @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle says, it was delivered with a wooden hanger and a suit cover thingy, even though it was bought right at the end of the sales.

It reminds me of something a 95 year old nanna would wear on her deathbed.

Well you’d better start stocking up so you’ll have one ready!Grin (Or are you hoping not to live to 95?)

But my DM is over 90 - extremely stylish, and C&R isn’t her sort of thing at all - so I doubt that a taste for voluminous retro-romantic frocks is age based …

CommeIlFaut · 22/03/2024 09:53

People in East London, Cambridge and Brighton. It would look odd and like dress-up in my posh but quite conservative Essex village, but would blend right in at work in Cambridge or at lunch or a gallery in East London. I was at the Whitechapel gallery last week and felt very underwhelmingly dressed in jeans and a cashmere tunic.

OK, we get it. Yawn. It's not your thing.
Maybe take a look at the Greggs link I posted upthread?

timoteigirl · 22/03/2024 10:40

@localnotail "Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs? - did you make these up?

I have heard both of these already years ago. Cottage core is name for a way of dressing like Dark Academica. Prairie. Cardigans, faded pastels, small floral prints. etc. Turnip toffs is a term I have heard around the stately homes in Norfolk.

Do you really have nothing better to do than come back repeatedly to a thread about clothes you don't like just to be rude?

How sad.

There's several threads about jean styles. I don't even bother opening them. I have nothing to add to them.

There's a thread about "what body style would suit this dress" Opened it, the dress isn't my thing. Close thread. I've got nothing to add to that thread by posting on it.

Think you might find wearing whatever you like and not following the norm very liberating.
I lived in Oklahoma 😁 for a while as a Brit abroad. I stuck out from the rest who were all immaculate in clothes and loads of makeup or Indigenous Indians basically stuck there. With My no make up, flat boots, short hair with early greasy and not clingy clothes I didn’t even need to open my mouth.
But who cares!
Did anyone vilify me…no
Did people make comments….occasionally but not rude. Just a ‘you’re not from round here are you’🤣🤣

Who cares what others think, liberate yourself from convention and be you. It’s far more interesting and surely everyone prefers interesting.

ps. love cabbage and roses but I tend to make a lot of my own clothes these days.
ps. never heard of turnip toff, wonder if that’s what Americans think we call the country set. I’m in said country type and that’s a new one on me.

Sorry.
not early greasy 🤯. Yuk
I meant early greys. ie grey hair.

Justpontificating · 23/03/2024 19:44

I’ve been buying from C&R for about 15/20ish years.
Mainly their coats, Jackets and trousers.

I love the attention to detail and fabrics.

For the purposes of working out what types buy from them I’m thinking maybe arty.

Im an architect country type.

As an aside thanks for the thread it’s made me open the website and I see there’s a big sale on🥳

craigth162 · 23/03/2024 19:50

Gonna have to google these now

triggers34 · 26/03/2024 17:59

On the back of this thread I've just purchased a blue tartan wool dress with velvet collar from Vinted . It was pricey for me so I really hope I like it!

HothouseFlower · 26/03/2024 19:03

That Klements website is 😍@BoringBoris ! Loving the combination of metallic ziggy-stardust leggings and flowery dresses!

I love the attention to detail and the approach. Same goes for C&R, although it's very different. I love looking at well-made clothes and interesting design, even if I'm not going to wear it myself.
Anything that's a change from the beige norm.
