Who actually wears Cabbagees & Roses?

*please excuse the typo in the title!

Newbie here. I'm from the US but love British style and follow British fashion and culture. There's one question to which I can't seem to find the answer - who is actually wearing Cabbages & Roses clothing?

I've really loved Cabbages & Roses lately, but few in the US seems to even be aware of this brand. I know it's a very small brand. I'm also aware that it is not "in style" or even very practical. It would be considered really "out-there" in the US.

My question is - is this brand something that is actually worn by British women? If so, who is actually wearing this brand? Is it 25 year old "Fashionistas", "Cottage Core" girls, the so-called "Turnip Toffs?"
Rich middle aged women? Younger girls with good jobs and large available balances on their credit cards? Mom types?

Have you ever seen someone wearing one of their signature flowy/billowy dresses in public? What type of person were they? How would you describe them?

Thank you for any insight!

Oh that's adorable @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle. The woman's jacket is especially gorgeous. Are they relatives of yours?

And I love that navy coat you posted above. I'm a sucker for a curved hem.

No. They just came up on a search for pre WWI wedding outfits.

HothouseFlower · 02/04/2024 14:53

@mm47 however you want, bare or not, would be the answer 😁but I think probably just like an apron? I found this link on Pinterest:
https://thenewworldordernyc.com/vintage-comme-des-garons-apron-skirt
Is that the skirt?

This wedding outfit could be straight out of current Cabbages and Roses. It's from 1917.

Oh my, that outfit is so like the one in the family photo I mentioned upthread! The groom is in military uniform too. I'm not going to post it as my grandfather's on it - he's long dead but it wouldn't feel right somehow.

mm47 · 02/04/2024 17:33

(No hothouse, the skirt you have turned up is even cooler. And I certainly wouldn’t try to get that copied, it looks rather complicated. Definitely drool worthy, though!)

Apologies I’ve just realised I have posted in the wrong thread (should be on Parisiennes)! Idiot (!) sorry

No worries. Although I have no idea how you would wear it.

I got married in a gold silk Droopy & Brown dress, hat & stole, so delighted to hear both the gossip behind the scenes & love for the actual clothes.

Looking back, working as a young woman in the 80s/90s was often awful. I've got teenagers (who sometimes wear my D&B as 'vintage') and it's made me look at the crap I was expected to put up with quite differently.

Anyway, despite being happily married, I'm well up for taking one for the team if it means a Cabbage outfit.

And as a random aside 'My Fair Lady' with Cecil Beaton's wonderful Ascot gowns is on Amazon Prime via a free trial on Paramount. It's every bit as wonderful as you might remember and it was joyful to watch my DDs seeing for the first time.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/04/2024 10:11

‘Cloth of gold’ sounds utterly glorious @CatNamed.

(Did Harriet Vane wear a hat with her gown? I’ll have to google, as not at home.)

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 03/04/2024 10:14

‘off-the-face head-dress‘ apparently …

CatNamed · 03/04/2024 12:26

I think Cabbages &Roses could cover all of these events...

I've never seen any dresses of those types where I live, not on any age group. I am coveting their dungarees though but alas just make women of my size look fat or pregnant

LoveFairIsleJumpers · 03/04/2024 16:46

Love Cabbages and Roses of old, but I think they have gone off a bit recently. Have you seen Justine Tabak . . . also a quintessentially British brand and I think quite well known in USA - lovely Instagram (justinetabak.co.uk) . Lots of Irish Linen and Liberty Tana Lawn in the collection I think.

I was constantly recommending the velvet (or was it cord?) JT dresses over Winter, @LoveFairIsleJumpers - even though they’re really not quite my thing!

londonmummy1966 · 03/04/2024 17:40

@LoveFairIsleJumpers thank you for that - one JT skirt heading my way!

Mirabai · 03/04/2024 18:45

I’ve got a really beautiful fair isle stole from them.

I like their furnishing fabric and some of their clothes but I’m not into massive floral tents.

I love Justine Tabak - I live in the cord dresses in winter and the linen dresses in summer. Quite a 'bohemian' / Laura Ashley vibe perfect for wearing everyday. x

FAB - I hope you enjoy it . . .I love her clothes.

CatNamed · 03/04/2024 19:43

JT - thankyou, I absent myself, I have a website to attend to.

Peak frump

The past two years were mostly peak frump. They had a couple of decent fabrics (corduroy and poplin) but even that is gone. Wool is worse than what one can purchase in average shops. But more than any of that, their customer service is absolute drama. I suppose they advertise it as a "lifestyle", while some customers were more interested in decent fabrics and tailoring. More recently, the "lifestyle"description has taken over without actual fact. Fabrics have gotten worse, no wool mark, made in China, etc. Really would not recommend, and especially not with all the transatlantic fees. Years back, they were almost as good as getting tailored. Now, it is actually better to pick one's own fabric and actually get stuff tailored (the price is the same).

GettingStuffed · 12/08/2024 17:41

I would if I could afford it

I have a few Cabbages and Roses items- all made in the UK. I had a look on the website- all the coats and jackets are made in the UK. I didn't check every dress but all the dresses I checked were made in the UK.

I found customer service was excellent.
