Underwear and Wedding outfit if overweight - just want to cry

I’ve been unwell for a while and gained a lot of weight. My normal is 160lbs and I’m currently 190lbs. I’m 5 foot 8 and 25yo usually wear anywhere between a 14 and an 18 but usually 14 on the bottom and 16 on the top. I’m getting married next month and just want to call it all off.

I hate the way I look and don’t feel happy in anything. Now I’m feeling better I’m obviously making changes to my routine to help me lose weight but it won’t be fast enough for the wedding.

I was thinking some flattering, slightly special underwear may help (nothing OTT, no extra holes or anything) but have no idea where to look. Current bras are 32HH and fit quite well but are plain.

Additionally any advice for dresses? I’m not going for traditional and was considering something like this… https://www.phase-eight.com/product/julissa-ruffle-wrap-midi-dress-22180560008.html. Maybe in the green..
Budget of £500 ish. I’d do anything to feel slightly better

Sorry about your health.

as someone with BIG boobs the single most important thing to me is a bra that lifts. I don’t like to make recommendations as every woman is different, I never find recommendations work for me as I have extremely heavy boobs, I now go with what feels good. One trick I have found that works is those bras that feel like wire is cutting your shoulders, I now use these shoulder supports, they are a game changer.

Ok not flattering underneath but I’d rather do a quick sultry underwear change before the big night than be uncomfortable all day. I remember my wedding day wearing big comfy full briefs and no regrets.

As someone with a round tummy I also find wrap dresses so it and miss. I have a lovely one I found in TKMax I like but the only time I ever suited one was when I was tiny.

For me fitted or fit and flare make me feel my tummy is less noticeable, like what I’ve attached. I’m an 18 in this pic (5ft2”) but the dress size is 20 I’d lost a bit of weight from when I bought it. I’m also 38HH. The dress it self is TKMaxx so no help but it’s a style I stick to as I know it flatters my figure.

Could you buy something bigger and have it adjusted to fit you better? I’ve don’t this before, bought something that fits me well on top and had it tucked in.

Also look at chunky belts, not something I’d considered before but I ended up wearing one last summer with a dress and it made a big difference.

I used to work in this area.

Bras yea a good bra can make a big difference but I am going to suggest a corset. Just because you aren't going traditional with the dress doesn't mean you can't have fun (and support from) the lingerie. Plus it's really hard to feel unsexy in a corset!

I am a similar size to you but much shorter. I've several corsets that I wear either under garments or for just... fun Wink

I wore one on my wedding day too (I did go traditional) being sceptical at first it was great actually as meant I didn't have to worry about a bra moving about, straps slipping etc there are some very comfortable ones available too.

I have this in the purple

www.lovehoney.co.uk/lingerie/plus-size-lingerie/basques-corsets/p/lovehoney-plus-size-treasure-me-purple-push-up-basque-set/a40915g74546.html

But if you're wearing a dark colour anyway the black would work fine. Super comfy, can manage the boobage, easy to put on (just zips up the front) and has comfy straps too

AliceMcK · 09/03/2024 01:18

I’d feel this would definitely be flattering to my curves!

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 09/03/2024 02:41

good undies and the corset idea are great (spanx's) does some interesting stuff.
in one month you potentially could loose 10lbs at your current weight (certainly depends on meds) and 10 lbs less would also boost how you feel about your appearance.
pay attention to shoes and accessories so the look is polished.
congratulations and happy undie and dress shopping!

I know it's all personal and subjective but apart from your long black dress there's not a single dress on here I'd ever contemplate wearing or would make me go up to someone and say "fantastic dress". That black dress is so much nicer than anything else. I'm not sure why a dress in that style is now unwearable. It's so much nicer than the purple, dipped hem ruffled one.

You said you have a budget of £500 and you don't want traditional bridal so I'm not sure why you're getting suggestions of cheap bridesmaids' dresses.

If I were you I'd go to the websites of Liberty, MyTheresa, Net a Porter, Matches, Harvey Nick's, Browns and set the filters to your size and budget.

There's a world of beautiful, eye-catching non bridal dresses out there.

Here's Liberty, MyTheresa and Net a Porter.

Wrap dresses are flattering for a large bus but only when they’re cut with enough room. This dress is similar to what you posted. I’m hoping that this collection is cut as generously as her bridal gowns. They worked for me and I’m a 32J. The link shows it on a plus size model.

I second Elomi. I have a very nice basque from them. When I really need the girls to send to attention, I wear two bras and it’s not as awful as it sounds.

@WeddingNight - even though you don’t think you want anything ‘bridal’ I really would advise you to spend your whole budget and get something as special as possible. Of course countless women get married in jeans or any old dress - but don’t dress down because you’re not happy with your body; you'll have an entire lifetime of looking back at the photos and regretting that you didn’t make more of such a special day.

I all also think there are alternatives to a wrap dress - something more youthful and fashionable might bring you a lot more joy.

How about this shape - since you have the height to make it splendid:

Doesn’t have to be that dress of course. (Slightly over budget but - it’s your wedding.) I just think, as has been mentioned above, there’s a world of beautiful, fashionable, youthful looking dresses you could choose from, that will make you feel fabulous on the day.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 09/03/2024 04:51

How could anyone look at the wonderful Halfpenny site above and not immediately want to order one of these - maybe pre-owned if beyond your budget?

I think this one would look lovely but the one you've chosen is great too. When I'm larger (I yo-yo) I always prefer less material around my chest and sleeves 💐

Autienotnautie · 09/03/2024 04:56

You need a thicker material to give curves quiz or coast do lovely dress. I'm a fan of a 50's style dress with netted skirt as it hides many sins!

Ohh I forgot about Marina.
spotted this one in budget!!

I would recommend a trip to Rigby and Peller. Yes, it is expensive but the service and knowledge you will gain, and transformation by wearing the right underwear is worth every penny imho. It will last you a lifetime.

MumofSpud · 09/03/2024 06:59

When I got married I didn't wear a traditional white wedding dress as I thought it wouldn't suit me (I wore a grey suit - I was v happy with this at the time) and nobody told me any different!

I cane to regret that I made that decision based on what I thought I would look like (I had gone a major diet aswell)

It wasn't until I went to a wedding a few years later that I realised that the bride will always look fab

I agree you need a good bra - I went to rigby and peller in London but they have places over the UK now - I have the same boobs!

Have you tried any dresses on? Avoid halter necks though!
