To counteract the ‘frumpy’ thread, tell me about an outfit you feel really good in

I feel a bit depressed about clothes after the ‘frumpy’ thread. I think that pretty much every colour, brand, clothing item and accessory ever created was at some point ‘frumpied.’

And yet I see so many women and girls wearing those styles, choosing colours and clothes they enjoy and looking great (or at least perfectly fine for the weather and occasion.) I’m fascinated by how people express themselves through clothing and feel a bit sad that clothes that make women feel good get dismissed like that.

I’m happy to start. I think my outfit might be a frumpy full house. I’ve got some olive green Seasalt cropped wide leg cords. I wear them with a Boden cream silk blouse with frills and an ancient tweed jacket. Plus brown leather knee boots and my maroon specs. I always feel put together, sassy and properly grown up.

Please share an outfit that makes you feel really good.

I bought some navy Hobbs ankle grazer trousers at a fashion show at a bargain price in the autumn and a bright checked jacket to go with them, and love them. I can't wait for it to be warm anough to wear ankle grazers again.

Thank you for starting this thread. I thought the other one was horrible and sneery and full of posters who enjoy putting other people down.

Frumpitydoo · 07/03/2024 17:33

Your outfit sounds delectable OP, I love it!
My go to is, unfortunately, my knock-off Oodie right now.

WhereAreWeNow · 07/03/2024 17:37

Great idea. I too was depressed by the other thread.
I feel good in my skinny jeans, ankle boots and chunky jumper. Terrible crimes according to the other thread.
I also feel good in a nice deep V blouse with a cropped teal cardi. Also a terrible crime!

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 07/03/2024 17:43

It’s not what you wear but how you wear it.

there used to be a lady I saw regularly round here who looked sensational- but she only ever wore jeans and a T shirt or sweater. Whereas other woman could look so dull in that outfit she looked fab

I wear a lot of outdoorsy stuff as it suits my active lifestyle. Some people probably think that’s frumpy but I don’t care 🤷🏼‍♀️

LaChienneDesFromages · 07/03/2024 17:45

I’m currently wearing several items that would be judged as crimes against fashion by the frumpy police. Although my daughter’s neon pink ski socks with cropped jeans could be seen as pretty directional, in some circles.

My outfit of choice is cargos, cosy jumper and knock off uggs at the moment.
Although TBH since going from a size 24 to a 12 pretty much every outfit feels awesome!

SomersetTart · 07/03/2024 17:47

I love the sound of your outfit OP.
I read the other thread whilst wearing my favourite outfit....White Stuff denim cropped dungarees, Sea salt navy and white Breton top, Fat Face round neck olive green cardigan, olive green spotty silk scarf, brown knee high boots and my glasses. A complete full house of frumpy mumsy Bingo according to the other horrible thread. I still love my outfit. It makes me feel happier just to put that lot on.

RampantIvy · 07/03/2024 17:47

It rains a lot where I live so a smart coat with wide jeans and trainser just wouldn't work. Jeggings or straight leg jens with ankle boots and a parka is my autumn, winter and spring uniform.

FinallyFeb · 07/03/2024 17:50

A Chanel esque jacket, my size 14 skinnies that now fit (I’m so happy) and trainers.

I have been wearing this on recent nights and bouncing around because I’m so happy.

Did I mention they now fit, size 14, just saying?

Smittenkitchen · 07/03/2024 17:50

I agree re. the other thread. One PP had such a long list of frumpy items that I honestly don't know how she manages to find enough things that she would deem non-frumpy with which to clothe her whole body.
I have recently had a colour analysis done so am obsessed with "my colours" and currently feel really good in a salmon (a shade I never would have chosen before) Uniqlo shirt with some slouchy trousers (black, not in my colour palette but oh well!) And I'm embracing gold jewellery as that's what suits me best. Usually some small-medium chunky hoops.
Lovely idea for a thread.

GoodnightAdeline · 07/03/2024 17:57

Weirdly I feel very attractive in my work clothes. I suit tailoring, classic cuts, dresses and muted colours. I don’t look exactly like Yvonne Strahovski but I have that ‘kind’ of look and colourings and am tall. I find casual outfits hard to put together and feel scruffy in them.

Inlimboin50s · 07/03/2024 17:57

I'm in Seasalt cropped cords, a white Fatface linen shirt, a long oatmeal colour open cardigan with Hotter ankle boots. Feel very stylish today's usually I'm in joggers as work as a cleaner.

Floralovesflowers · 07/03/2024 18:06

I've not seen the frumpy thread yet but last time I read one, my whole outfit was name checked yet had a number of RL comments on how nice I looked!

My current outfit I feel good in is whistle's barrel jeans cinched at the waist as bit big, clumpy boots & uniqlo striped polo neck jumper tucked in. Thats probably on the frump list too!

ThePoshUns · 07/03/2024 18:12

My bright pink Oliver Bonas corduroy jumpsuit

ThePoshUns · 07/03/2024 18:13

I haven't seen the frumpy thread. Couldn't care less if it's frumpy or not!

Yorkshireknitter · 07/03/2024 18:13

They’ll have to pry my Boden Breton stripe top from my cold dead frumpy hands! I always feel good in a denim jacket, as that means it can’t be raining on us that day 😎 Perhaps some culottes and then some chunky sandals because I’ve now committed to this lovely pretend summer look!

ConflictofInterest · 07/03/2024 18:28

I am Queen of the Frumps. I always feel good in oversized Seasalt organic cotton tunics and leggings, with a soft merino jumper over the top in this weather. Or floating about in linen dresses when it's warmer. I've been collecting them from Vinted with great enthusiasm recently. Like pp said it's not just what I wear, it's how I wear it, so you do have to picture this being worn by a short, fat, frizzy haired, middle aged woman gardening in colourful wellies to really appreciate the full impact. Also I only suit muddy colours.

Cantonet · 07/03/2024 18:30

These outfits all sound great & not frumpy at all. It's how you wear them.
My 19 year old dd looks great in ironic little Damart Cardigans from the charity shop. Whereas I would look a mess.

I'm currently wearing green cropped M&S cords, brown Crush Cashmere sweater, big mustard cashmere scarf & tan suede boots. All sludgy/frumpy colours to some, but as a soft Autumn it suits my colouring.

As Jean Paul Gaultier said: ‘Elegance is a question of personality, more than one’s clothing.’ I think the same is true of ‘frumpiness’. If you give off vibes of being downtrodden and not enjoying life, that is what makes you look frumpy imho. And I don’t think it’s fair to judge people like that - who knows what a woman is having to deal with in her personal life or in her head, which has stopped her enjoying life?

You’re so right to ask ‘what do you feel good in?’. Because feeling good about yourself is the key to not looking frumpy, not the individual items worn. Think about some of the ostensibly frumpy/geeky looks Alexa Chung puts together for example - nobody would think of her as frumpy though!

Like most people, my interest in clothes and looking after myself has waxed and waned at different points over the years. I have had times when I’ve lost my way and felt frumpy. Getting back out of a slump like that requires me to feel good about myself, so I usually start by looking after myself physically (nutritious food, fresh air and exercise, plenty of water and sleep etc). I’ll spend a bit more time doing nails/hair etc and slowly I find I’m enjoying thinking about clothes again and the frumpiness quickly disappears! Even if they are the same clothes. I guess I just put more effort into styling outfits rather than throwing something on. Using my wardrobe properly, thinking about accessories, keeping shoes clean, clothes pressed etc.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 07/03/2024 19:25

I'm wearing this dress. I love it. It's warm, it's lined, it's got pockets, it swishes and always gets compliments.

The dress is Cabbages and Roses and I'm never "frumpy".

I'm wearing a navy satin midi bias skirt, with navy fine knit jumper. Gold jewelry, tan ankle boots, plus a beige trench when I was out earlier. Feeling very cosy, comfy and put together.

Lots of truth in that.

For me, it's anything that fits properly - a constant battle as I have a narrow frame but large boobs (might sound good - trust me, it isn't). Everything hangs off the norks, and looks like maternity wear, and tops that fit my shoulders are way too tight on the boobs. When I occasionally strike gold with a top that fits well without making me look like Bet Lynch in her heyday, I'm a happy woman.

That’s a beautiful dress. I love how it’s styled in the photo too.

Wide leg jeans that are either full length or cropped with a nice blouse and Mary Jane’s.

Frumpitydoo · 07/03/2024 20:20

Go @henlake7 You are awesome and an inspiration!
