To counteract the ‘frumpy’ thread, tell me about an outfit you feel really good in

I feel a bit depressed about clothes after the ‘frumpy’ thread. I think that pretty much every colour, brand, clothing item and accessory ever created was at some point ‘frumpied.’

And yet I see so many women and girls wearing those styles, choosing colours and clothes they enjoy and looking great (or at least perfectly fine for the weather and occasion.) I’m fascinated by how people express themselves through clothing and feel a bit sad that clothes that make women feel good get dismissed like that.

I’m happy to start. I think my outfit might be a frumpy full house. I’ve got some olive green Seasalt cropped wide leg cords. I wear them with a Boden cream silk blouse with frills and an ancient tweed jacket. Plus brown leather knee boots and my maroon specs. I always feel put together, sassy and properly grown up.

Please share an outfit that makes you feel really good.

It rains a lot where I live so a smart coat with wide jeans and trainser just wouldn't work. Jeggings or straight leg jens with ankle boots and a parka is my autumn, winter and spring uniform.

This is also me for autumn and spring. Love straight leg jeans + parka + ankle boots. My summer "uniform" is knee length comfortable dresses + sandals.

Good thread. Clothes should be fun.

HaveringGold · 08/03/2024 03:20

I just bought the most gorgeous sky blue gazelles, I love them best with wide leg culotte jeans (Uniqlo) and a big linen shirt (seaside tones) in fairness it's very warm here. I love the giant oversized look that drives some people on MN bonkers.

Fabulous thread. I‘be enjoyed three pages of this more than however many pages the frumpy thread is. I proudly wear loads of things on ‘the list’ and frankly feel fabulous in them!

I have a number of ‘throw on and go’ midi dresses from Arket/Toast/Kemi Telford. I can swap and change accessories depending on season.

My go-to jeans are some crop wide leg jeans in ecru that I like wearing with long boots, chunky cropped wool jumper in ochre and a black and ecru tweedy duster coat from M&S I have had for years.

Another favourite outfit is black skinny jeans tucked into combat boots with a grey jumper under a long pale camel leather trench coat. I swap out the skinnies for blue barrel legs often but it’s a tried and tested look for me.

I wear...ssshhh....Boden jersey dresses. AND I like the prints.

WhereAreWeNow · 08/03/2024 06:38

I was thinking this @MissLucyEyelesbarrow - so many of the clothes/styles/looks that were described as frumpy on that thread were things that are also listed on the regular 'how do French women look so chic' threads.
Think of the super chic Andrea in Call My Agent. Skinny jeans, ankle boots, blouse.... All terrible crimes according to the other thread 🤣
I love the French chic look. I don't care if it's frumpy!

Being half-Frog, I was amused by the frump thread, given S&B's obsession with French style. Many of the items decried as frumpy are absolute French staples. It may actually be illegal not to be wearing a scarf in some régions. And the French bloody love a ballet flat.

I’m half French too and I reckon my very stylish maman could cross the Alps in her ballers flats. And my very cool Parisienne nieces are rocking their ‘frumpy’ Lucy and Yak dungarees after a pilgrimage to Brighton at Christmas 🙂

Love ur outfit op! Great Post!!
My go-to wide leg trousers with cashmere jumper and either pointed boots or NikeAirs.

Would love cropped cords/ jeans but have not managed to find any that suit my already short legs!!

Skyellaskerry · 08/03/2024 07:02

I didn’t get far with the other thread, but this one is joyful!

I love my tunics, Nordic socks over leggings, handknits, crops with birkies, eBay cashmere bids.

Weirdly I feel very attractive in my work clothes. I suit tailoring, classic cuts, dresses and muted colours. I don’t look exactly like Yvonne Strahovski but I have that ‘kind’ of look and colourings and am tall. I find casual outfits hard to put together and feel scruffy in them.

This is probably me too. I wear a lot of dresses, in neutral colours and big up the footwear and the jewellery. Love it.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 08/03/2024 07:16

Pleather mini skirt, opaque tights, v neck jumper and biker boots.

The trend for pleated satin Midi skirts is my idea of hell, they don't suit me and I do look frumpy.

I’m off to a work event today in this lovely dress. From a small, ethical producer. With a Boden cropped cashmere cardigan c.2011.

Is it the epitome of sexy, understated style? Er, nope.
Does it feel good, keep me warm and me and make me happy? yup!

Palava Beatrice Cap Navy Cornfield Dress

The Beatrice dress from Palava is classically elegant in its simplicity. It features a boat neckline with pretty v-neck back, summery cap sleeves, an elegant tie belt & deep pockets. It is fully lined with the softest light-weight organic cotton. T...

This thread is giving me so much inspo - especially the date outfit.

My problem is I wfh and don't see the point of wearing clothes that will be a pain to wash or iron, or risk wearing them out when noone will see them. I need to get over this!

Living in sport socks, leggings and hoodies.

Echobelly · 08/03/2024 08:09

I bought so tan corduroy boot cut trousers, liked the shape wasn't sure about the colour (online purchase) but they actually look great and I enjoy wearing them with a chunky earthy coloured jumper and some new chunky boots made of interesting patches of tooled, coloured leather.

Me too. I don’t understand the obsession with anything that isn’t ‘fitted’ being frumpy/scruffy/terrible.

MorrisZapp · 08/03/2024 08:16

I'm past caring about my winter wardrobe because I'm truly over cold weather dressing. I'm all about anticipating the liberation of summer! My absolute favourite summer look is a maxi dress, cork wedges and my vintage Wrangler denim jacket. Sunglasses for the full effect.

Denim jackets are a design classic, I own five, from various eras of the half century I've been alive. I've often thought if I had time to write a book it would be about the history of the DJ.

RunnerDown · 08/03/2024 08:17

I love wearing cardigans which the other thread generally derided. But I’m in Scotland and layers are a definite requirement. I have a camel mohair one that I l enjoy wearing with straight leg black jeans.
The other thread was really horrible. How can 1 woman decide what’s wrong style wise for all other shapes and sizes and lifestyles.

SquashPenguin · 08/03/2024 08:20

Black band tshirt, black skinny jeans, black DMs. Maybe black mesh sleeves underneath if it’s cold.

Floisme · 08/03/2024 08:40

My favourite outfit at the moment is wide leg jeans, a fitted 1950s jacket, a men's paisley scarf, a Miss Marple brooch and loafers.

That said, I really believe (even if I don't always practise it) that the most effective response to online wind up merchants is to withhold your attention.

I love Palava. I have at least half a dozen dresses from them. I'm very jealous about that one as I dithered about getting it and it sold out very quickly. I'm hoping they will repeat the pattern.

Great idea. I too was depressed by the other thread.
I feel good in my skinny jeans, ankle boots and chunky jumper. Terrible crimes according to the other thread.
I also feel good in a nice deep V blouse with a cropped teal cardi. Also a terrible crime!

I found it funny that posters were saying all women looked frumpy in skinny jeans. If a woman has good legs and wearing something that accentuates them how can it be frumpy? With the right footwear like nice ankle boots (I prefer chunky) they do still look good.

4610J · 08/03/2024 09:07

I have a jumper dress I always feel nice in which I wear with boots. It fits me perfect.

Meadowfinch · 08/03/2024 09:15

I bought a pair of bronze coloured cigarette pants with a very fine metallic thread through them, in a Pure sale, and a boat-neck cream cotton, long sleeve sweater from Boden that also has a very subtle sparkle. Worn with my favourite pair of ballet flats.

I'm quite tall & lean, and they suit me, fit perfectly, are comfortable and just right for evening drinks, a casual meal in summer etc.

honeylulu · 08/03/2024 10:47

For work I really love fitted dresses from pre-Boohoo Karen Millen and LK Bennett. I know other posters have expressed a dislike for fitted clothes but these really suit and flatter my figure and I feel "the business" when I head into a meeting. I wear them with heels too which I know are seen as ageing and "try too hard" these days but I don't care because I feel good.

For more comfy days I love Dancing Leopard shirt dresses which I've seen get a few sneers on the S&B threads but so comfortable, flattering and suitable for both office and out and about. The long ones look great (to me) with plain black trainers too, another bonus.

I also love skinny jeans and leggings. I don't think they look frumpy (much less so than those godawful mom jeans that make everyone's arse look long and flat) but if anyone does think i look frumpy idgaf.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 08/03/2024 12:17

It’s how you wear it!

My friend wears all the Popsy patterned dresses that were slated on the other thread, but she rocks them! They would look “frumpy” on me though!!

Just saw a lady today in brown trousers & a khaki top. She had grey hair despite being middle aged (under 50) - I would look deathly in that but she looked super stylish.
