To counteract the ‘frumpy’ thread, tell me about an outfit you feel really good in

I feel a bit depressed about clothes after the ‘frumpy’ thread. I think that pretty much every colour, brand, clothing item and accessory ever created was at some point ‘frumpied.’

And yet I see so many women and girls wearing those styles, choosing colours and clothes they enjoy and looking great (or at least perfectly fine for the weather and occasion.) I’m fascinated by how people express themselves through clothing and feel a bit sad that clothes that make women feel good get dismissed like that.

I’m happy to start. I think my outfit might be a frumpy full house. I’ve got some olive green Seasalt cropped wide leg cords. I wear them with a Boden cream silk blouse with frills and an ancient tweed jacket. Plus brown leather knee boots and my maroon specs. I always feel put together, sassy and properly grown up.

Please share an outfit that makes you feel really good.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I'm so envious, that dress is to die for!

dudsville · 07/03/2024 20:22

Lovely idea OP! I love plaids and checks, and houndstooth patterns in fabrics. I also love cotton, linen and wool, and I'm a big the long swishy dresses with pockets and barrel leg cord trousers with wool jumpers and cardigans. I don't have a lot of shoes but they're all pretty clumpy, sturdy, comfortable.

Sometimes i get it wrong (by my own eye) and think i look like I'm about to harness the team to plough the back 40 or am selling newspapers on a NY street corner in the 20s, but even then I'm loving the colours, patterns and fabrics so much i don't care.

My clothes being me a lot of joy, something I'd been missing for at least a decade until the pandemic came and i realised i hadn't been dressing for me. My look is different to everyone around me, but i have a couple of close friends who can say the same, the 3 of us have each embraced our own preferences and can enjoy each other's choices without replicating it.

Frumpitydoo · 07/03/2024 20:23

@FinallyFeb Well done! That's awesome!

I know exactly what you mean - except it's not getting it wrong.

Namechangeforadhd · 07/03/2024 20:26

Your outfit sounds lovely OP!
I've got some unfeasibly trendy cargo baggy jeans, which I pair with a charity shop vintagey sports top (and sadly a pair of trainers - I've got bad feet 😂). I feel proper young and cool!

WhereAreWeNow · 07/03/2024 20:27

@Marlaysydney12 that sounds like a great outfit.

WoodBurningStov · 07/03/2024 20:28

I've been told by my dd that I need to 'style' my clothes and not just 'wear them.

I think she might be right.

I always feel more put together in a pair of dark bootcut jeans, heeled boots and a white shirt. If I put makeup on, do my hair, put jewellery and a belt on plus a scarf I suddenly feel all stylish

megacat · 07/03/2024 20:32

A midi dress with a sweater, tights, fake docs and a fake leather bomber jacket make me feel great.

A floral tiered midi with ballon sleeves is apparently a heinous fashion crime but I love one in the summer.

Granny chic is my favourite style and I give not one shit if it's frumpy.

FreeTheWeatherfieldOne · 07/03/2024 20:36

I went out on a date last weekend wearing the outfit below.

Felt like an absolute badass even though I am over 40, not skinny and a mum 😱

Have never paid any mind to what I "should" be wearing for my age/size etc. I just wear what makes me happy and I think that that in itself brings it's own level of confidence 😊.

Love this idea for a thread!

Doc martens and tights, handknitted socks, an ancient satin skirt covered in autumnal flowers, a charity shop cashmere cardigan tucked in, a necklace made out of an old copper coin, red lipstick, an enormous handkitted lace shawl wrapped around my neck.

A black sundress, an old pair of birkenstocks, a handcrocheted crop top, an art shop canvas bag, huge cheap sunglasses.

Life is too short to wear anything that isn’t 100% you 😊

I've recently brought some wide leg diamanté jeans and I love them, especially when the sun shines on them. I don't think they are frumpy, if anything I was worried they were too cowgirl/90s but I had to remind myself that no one cares, and I like them!

henlake7 · 07/03/2024 20:49

This is more like it!😃 It takes confidence and individuality to go againest the masses and be true to yourself.
Makes you a person worth knowing IMO!

semideponent · 07/03/2024 20:50

sage green horseshoe jeans, a fine knit, close fitting Eric Bompard polo neck, Adidas trainers

This sounds fantastic! You reminded me of a pair of jeans i wore several years back that had embellished back pockets. They took me right back to my childhood and i enjoyed wearing them so much!

It's autumn (but still feels like summer) where I am and I'm wearing linen a lot. Plain dresses if it's hot, otherwise boxy tshirts tucked into Levis Ribcage jeans or a satin midi skirt.

White, natural (a kind of oat colour), khaki or charcoal/black with tan leather accessories. I feel quite chic!

LunaTheCat · 07/03/2024 21:03

I too felt destroyed by the frump thread!
I think that you can wear anything! .. it’s the attitude that counts!
I have some coats I love… my favourite is a 1950’s red velvet coat… I wear it over anything and I am immediately transformed.
I also have a pair or Tracey Neuls brogues in platted leather red/black am white… capable transforming a plain black dress into something magical.

Being half-Frog, I was amused by the frump thread, given S&B's obsession with French style. Many of the items decried as frumpy are absolute French staples. It may actually be illegal not to be wearing a scarf in some régions. And the French bloody love a ballet flat.

Cotswoldmama · 07/03/2024 22:18

I've got a thing about short shorts atm so my vintage American apparel cord high waisted black shorts with sheer opaque black tights, with a cropped tight fitted stripey polo neck and a cropped fluffy jumper (another thing I have a thing for I have the same fluffy jumper in 4 colours!) worn with my chunky heeled Chelsea boots.

krustykittens · 07/03/2024 22:26

I have a black bias cut, long sleeved Ozzy Clarke dress from the last time the brand was reincarnated. It is so long it touches my toes, has long sleeves, a key hole back, has a high neck line with a key hole opening to show cleavage and cold shoulders with a ruffle around the trimmed with gold. It is very 70s and I feel like a million dollars when I glide around in it!

Craftycorvid · 07/03/2024 22:35

I was amused and bemused as to the epic list of things deemed ‘frumpy’ - pretty much everything, apparently. 🤷‍♀️. I love the sound of all your individualistic outfits! I regard clothes as the adult version of the dressing up box. Who on earth doesn’t want to play when the world can be such a bleak place?

Pudmyboy · 07/03/2024 22:37

Thank you @LaChienneDesFromages for starting this thread! Tonight I am in super-warm fleece lined leggings and fleece top to keep the heating bill down but tomorrow I will be wearing a sage/olive patterned long-sleeved jersey dress, relaxed fit, below knee, slight cowl neck, with knee high black boots and a necklace from a charity shop which matches the colours in the dress really well. It's comfortable and suits me and I feel good in it. Will pick the coat once I know what the weather is going to do!

I'm half - Frog too. I agree.

UnctuousUnicorns · 07/03/2024 22:57

I went to see my favourite band in concert last Friday, and I'm seeing them again tomorrow night. Last Friday, I wore a long line v neck dark blue t shirt, over a black, above knee skater skirt, with opaque black tights and my trusty Reebok ridge riders. Ftr, I'm 53, 5 foot nothing, and currently weigh around 7 st 12 lb, which equates to around size 12, due to my stocky, 29 inch waist, Celtic (I've got to blame it on something 🤷‍♀️) build.

Tbh, I wouldn't have cared what I was wearing, so long as I was comfortable; I spent the whole evening singing my heart out and feeling like a teenager. 😅

Day to day wear is t-shirts and thick, sturdy leggings, occasionally dresses, again with my trusty opaque black tights.

Lucky for me that I long ago learned the art of not giving a fuck. 😅

olderbutwiser · 07/03/2024 22:58

I treated myself to a bright pink oversized cashmere wrap from rise and fall and feel fabulous whatever it’s slung over. I had my colours done again recently and have finally found a shade of lipstick that suits me, and that gives me a real boost too.

Geneti · 07/03/2024 23:17

I love this thread.

I have a thing for ugly clothes.

My two favourite outfits at the moment are a goldish massive chenille jumper over satiny brown and purple baggy trousers (my only 2 colourful items), worn with massive naked Wolfe white trainers

And gray black/sludge coloured, ankle grazer, high waisted baggy trousers (kind of zebra print I think they are meant to be), with a grey/beige ish cropped tshirt and an incredibly ugly men’s vintage cardigan that is baggy and wool in a mix of brown ish shades.

I wear a mix of metals for jewellery and a lot of earrings.
