To counteract the ‘frumpy’ thread, tell me about an outfit you feel really good in

I feel a bit depressed about clothes after the ‘frumpy’ thread. I think that pretty much every colour, brand, clothing item and accessory ever created was at some point ‘frumpied.’

And yet I see so many women and girls wearing those styles, choosing colours and clothes they enjoy and looking great (or at least perfectly fine for the weather and occasion.) I’m fascinated by how people express themselves through clothing and feel a bit sad that clothes that make women feel good get dismissed like that.

I’m happy to start. I think my outfit might be a frumpy full house. I’ve got some olive green Seasalt cropped wide leg cords. I wear them with a Boden cream silk blouse with frills and an ancient tweed jacket. Plus brown leather knee boots and my maroon specs. I always feel put together, sassy and properly grown up.

Please share an outfit that makes you feel really good.

Loving hearing about everyone’s feel-good outfits. Such different pieces being mentioned - it’s great we are all so different and wear what makes us happy!

I’m off to a work event today in this lovely dress. From a small, ethical producer. With a Boden cropped cashmere cardigan c.2011.

Is it the epitome of sexy, understated style? Er, nope.
Does it feel good, keep me warm and me and make me happy? yup!

Ah, that's lovely, bit beyond my budget, though. 'Fraid I'll have to remain a peasant in my cheap, frumpy Roman dresses. 🙄 😅

I'm ready to rock out at a gig tonight, in dark blue t- shirt, navy leggings and black Ridge Riders, like the middle aged style icon that I am. 😉

I bought so tan corduroy boot cut trousers, liked the shape wasn't sure about the colour (online purchase) but they actually look great and I enjoy wearing them with a chunky earthy coloured jumper and some new chunky boots made of interesting patches of tooled, coloured leather.

Those sound awesome! I love a pair of cords.
One of the things Im sad about is that I threw out most of my skinny wardrobe when I got fat thinking Id never get into again....
I had a lovely corduroy blazer and waistcoat combo in a deep wine red colour. I would absolutely be rocking those again with a fitted t and some flared jeans in true 70s style!😄

I’m feeling really good in my workwear at the moment! I did a big post-maternity clear out of all of the things that didn’t fit, and I’ve been slowly rebuilding my wardrobe with good quality basics and thinking about how I put outfits together so I look smart and professional. I’ve also lost 10kg over the last year and I feel so much better for it.

this was last week: denim shirt is Howies (Vinted) trousers, belt and trainers all M&S.

I’m wearing a cardigan (gasp) from white stuff (gasp) and I am not deluding myself it is the height of fashion but it is gorgeous colours and really warm and I love it

BuddhaAtSea · 08/03/2024 14:12

Jeans and white shirts (preferably linen). It never fails to make me feel good.

baubletits · 08/03/2024 14:14

I have these lovely black palazzo trousers from Tesco, that are a pleated material. They are really wide on the leg, stretchy, high waisted and the pleated material means that they hang over my lumpy bits instead of highlighting all my cellulite and huge tummy. I wear them with a cream fluffy jumper or a few skin-tight white long sleeved top tucked in.

I feel horrendous and uncomfortable in most of my clothes and am trying so hard to lose weight (which is happening so so slowly) but this outfit makes me feel so confident. I wear with a pair of white trainers. I never normally wear trainers anywhere other than the gym as they don't look "cool" on me, but I think they look lovely with the trousers

baubletits · 08/03/2024 14:16

@MotherWol that is the type of outfit I'd love to wear but right now would look awful on me. You look great, smart but not overdone. And comfy, which is the most important thing in my opinion 😁

NoddyfromToytown · 08/03/2024 14:17

One day time and one night time… absolute opposite ends of the spectrum but was definitely feeling myself in both…

Looking great @MotherWol

I just bought (another) breton top in defiance of that thread!

Really love that outfit, so cool for work

Snap @Floralovesflowers! I love my whistles barrel leg jeans. Currently wearing with a red cashmere jumper tucked in and feel ace 😊

XiCi · 08/03/2024 14:26

I'm past caring about my winter wardrobe because I'm truly over cold weather dressing. I'm all about anticipating the liberation of summer! My absolute favourite summer look is a maxi dress, cork wedges and my vintage Wrangler denim jacket. Sunglasses for the full effect.

Denim jackets are a design classic, I own five, from various eras of the half century I've been alive. I've often thought if I had time to write a book it would be about the history of the DJ.

This is my fave summer look as well!

Thanks for starting this thread OP. I had to click off the frumpy thread it was so depressing.

Tootytoot78 · 08/03/2024 14:31

I love wearing my ancient boot cut (Oh the horror!) Levis, that have washed to a gorgeous faded blue.
They are paired with a white cotton shirt which used belonged to my then 16 year old son.
Tan ankle boots and a saddle bag which has got to be 30 years old.
I honestly do have newer clothes! but this is my favourite casual outfit.
I have to give thanks to the Mumsnetter who gave the tip about spraying shirt collars with hairspray to stop foundation marking the shirt collar. Genius!

saturnspinkhoop · 08/03/2024 15:22

I have a pair of wide leg navy trousers and a pink stripey vest top. I know it doesn’t sound good, but it works as an outfit and it works on me. I wore it last year to a gathering and usually I get dressed up and then start to feel over or under dressed, or uncomfortable, or I realise too late that there’s a design flaw or that I just don’t look right. In this outfit though, I felt good all day.

Shopper727 · 08/03/2024 17:02

@LaChienneDesFromages that’s a lovely dress what colour was the cardi and did you wear tights? Shoes? I love watching people and seeing all the different styles out there, am currently going through stuff with my son so feeling a bit ‘not me’ overweight etc so I enjoy these threads, hearing what others wear and it gives me a bit of inspiration. I love clothes and shoes and putting an outfit together.

Catsandcuddles · 08/03/2024 18:48

I always feel my best in the summer wearing a cute dress with vans/ converse or chunky sandals. Leather jacket thrown over the top in the evening. It's comfy and I feel good in this look.

I'm really struggling at the moment what to wear on a night out though, I've grown up in the era of 'skinny jeans and a nice top' for so many years and even though they flatter my body shape, I feel dated in them . I bought some wide leg jeans from the Rita Ora collection recently in an attempt to be fashionable but I don't think they do anything to flatter me! 🙄

Craftycorvid · 09/03/2024 18:07

Today I’ve been wandering the streets of our nearest sizeable city and saw so many cheerfully individualistic outfits. It was lovely. All very different styles but all good. 🙂

Idontknowwhattodo78 · 09/03/2024 18:24

I have a jumpsuit I bought from M&S about 10 years ago. I never buy anything from M&S, ever, but this thing is magic and makes me feel a million dollars. It’s machine washable, hides my fat bits when I’m feeling chunky, is comfortable and really flattering. Depending on time of year, I wear it with a denim jacket or (brace yourselves) a faux fur coat that I bought from Primark about 15 years ago. That coat is the only thing I’ve ever bought from Primark and is also bloody magic, it was £15 and people ask me where it’s from all the time!

Craftycorvid · 10/03/2024 11:04

Sounds fab @Idontknowwhattodo78 Those ‘make it all better’ outfits are gold.

Today it’s raining in’t’northern regions where I live. I’m rocking a long waterproof coat and sturdy layers.
