Is this an excessive number of shoes and coats?

I have around 20 x pairs of shoes and 7 x coats and jackets

7 as a total combination of both boats and jackets seems reasonable. 20 is more than double the pairs of shoes/boots/trainers I have, but each to their own. If you wear all 20 throughout the year, fair enough.

Yes, 7 x jackets and coats total (3 x raincoats, 2 x wool coats, a really thick puffa coat and a denim jacket)

Sounds reasonable to me. I definitely have more coats than that - some are more than 10 years old.

I could definitely get rid of at least 4 x pairs of shoes and probably one of the coats too tbf. But they're stored away not bothering anyone

Totally fine.

I probably have 40 coats. Unlike tops for example, they don’t seem to wear/get damaged so I just hang on to the ones I like.

I'm going to get rid of some coats and shoes now, just to spite him 😉

He was totally incredulous about it. If he judged how many dresses I have I'd probably understand that more

What is behind his complaints?

Don't get rid of your coats. Don't get rid of your shoes. If he's anxious about something, he needs to address the anxiety, not extrernalise it.

I've got around 25 coats. That's outdoor only. No idea if you add in the sort of light jacket that can be indoors as well as outdoors.
Shoes around 60?

I've probably got about the same.

But if you asked me i'd tell you i don't have anything to wear 😂

I only wear one (maybe 2) of the coats because i'm not sure of how i look in the others.

And the shoes ... well i'm good at buying shoes but bad at bothering to wear anything other than whatever's in the hall trainers in the winter and my beloved flip flops in summer.

Gracious, I opened this thinking you were going to say 100...

I have a small wardrobe, don't spend much on clothes, and I have 3 coats and 3 jackets (4 if you count the one my sister gave me which I will make the right size one day).

The only reason I don't have 20 pairs of shoes is that I have wide feet and can't wear most stuff in the shops. My current total is 9, including gym trainers.

Don't get rid of anything (unless you're a 6EEE, in which case send them all over here)

Last time I counted, I had nearly 50 pairs of shoes, boots, etc. Some of them are very dressy and get worn once in a blue moon. One pair are my wedding shoes which I have only worn once.
Probably have about 10-15 coats, jackets, etc

Well then I’m lacking in coats as I have only 3. 😳 My shoe collection knows no bounds. I love a suede shoe.

Doesn’t sound excessive at all. 7 coats and jackets isn’t hard to get to - a big coat, raincoat, light jacket, smart coat and denim jacket and that’s 5 already.

With shoes there’s also a lot of types of shoe. And even if you did have more coats and shoes than average - so what!

Doesn’t seem like a lot to me. I wear a uniform and still have that many shoes. Coats are versatile and I find style changes are minimal for me as I lean towards classic silhouettes. Men don’t really have the variety of shoe choices so they rarely have as many unless they are a sneaker head. I have favorites every season I wear more /I usually buy something new /I resurrect an oldie and I donate one or two or get rid of if worn out. I keep them organized and clean same as my coats. I had an ex bf(a 40+ yr old) make fun of my shoe organization and how many I had-as he was “touring” his friend thru my house. It was an early red flag of his tight patronizing ways. It upset me at the time to be laughed at about using clear shoe bins…gee I should have patented that idea! Tell DH to clean out his own closet. One in one out is always a good rule if you want to lean down and stay that way.
