Is this an excessive number of shoes and coats?

Dh is acting as if I'm Marie Antoinette 😂🙄

I have around 20 x pairs of shoes and 7 x coats and jackets

I have two coats so it sounds a lot to me. Haven't counted my shoes

RosesAndHellebores · 17/02/2024 17:49

I had to work this put and I have 12 coats and jackets and 15 pairs of shoes/boots.

I don't think either of us have an excessive quantity. Why is your DH even commenting?

Bananalanacake · 17/02/2024 17:58

Do you mean Imelda Marcos? She had lots of shoes.

EighteenBaldingStars · 17/02/2024 17:59

Thanks all - I don't feel it is excessive either.

As to why he's commenting - he's just been through our storage space getting it ready because we have work starting on our house on Monday... and he stopped to count my fecking shoes 🙄.

He is maybe anxious about the work (it's a few thousand quids worth of work so we obviously want it to go well) and maybe he is projecting his anxiety on to my coats and footwear. So thank you to @mathanxiety who pointed out that it may be an anxiety thing. He does have GAD which he has medication for.

I've moved a few coats and shoes into my car as a stop gap as I might get rid of them. He doesn't know I've done that as he's finished in the storage space. He's a bigger hoarder than I am by far so he has a bit of a cheek really

We all have SO many jackets and shoes/ boots ,absolutely loads.

Mairzydotes · 17/02/2024 18:06

You probably have way less than average of both .

But if they are kept in a communal area of the house , they might seem a bit of a nuisance. It might be the 'where' not the ' how many ' that is the issue.

I have a long, light puffy coat, a long, heavy puffy coat with a hood, a 3/4 length heavy puffy coat / jacket with a hood, a wool coat for funerals and formal wear, a long raincoat, a short rain / wind jacket, three linen jackets in denim jacket style (various colours), an embroidered velvet jacket (Nehru style) for formal wear, plus three coatigans. One tailored black jacket, one white. Two tweedy jackets, flexible wear (formal, casual).

One pair of knee high boots, four pairs of ankle boots, all with heels ranging from flat to 1.5 inches, all black, one in suede. They go with different outfits/ styles of clothes - casual, formal. I also have a pair of black Uggs and a pair of combat style leather boots, plus two pairs of snow boots (we get serious snow here).

One pair of white leather sneakers, one pair of gray suede, one pair of black Nikes for the gym and exercise, two pairs of ecco shoe/booties, one lace up, one zipped, two pairs of summer canvas sneakers (gray and pink), two pairs of espadrilles, one high wedge heel and one lower, two pairs of black ballet flats, one red, one pair of casual slip ons, three loafers - one gold, one navy, one silver. One pair of black slingback peeptoe heels, rarely worn.

Sandals - pink, black, yellow, tan, Tevas, huaraches.

Also a pair of Ugg slippers.

Men often have far fewer items of outerwear and footwear because their wardrobes in general are far simpler - suits, jeans, formal and casual shirts, sportwear, shorts...

tiggergoesbounce · 17/02/2024 18:11

Absolutely not, i have many, many more.

LadyLolaRuben · 17/02/2024 18:13

Define coat? Jackets, blazers, wraps, gillet, winter coat, coat dress, suit jacket.

As for shoes, let's start with boots, I've got 20 pairs. Horse riding, wellies, ankle of various fabrics and colours to go with my work suits. Then there's Chelsea boots and smart casual for jeans - cream, brown, burgundy. Calf length boots for denim skirts and dresses.

Nope you need to up your game op Grin

I'd say definitely anxiety.

Don't act on it. It's his issue to acknowledge and deal with.

He's probably anxious about the cost of the work you're getting done, the prospect of tradesmen in and out, and general disruption.

You can be compassionate and kind - but also hold your own boundary here.

GrandHighPoohbah · 17/02/2024 18:17

The coats sound normal, but you have way more shoes than I do. But then again I WFH so don't even wear shoes for most of my work day!

mynameiscalypso · 17/02/2024 18:18

I don't think I have a lot of clothes but it's definitely less than I have by quite a long way!

99victoria · 17/02/2024 20:25

I have about 20 coats and about 80 pairs of shoes/boots 🤣

Darklane · 17/02/2024 20:34

I have many, many, many more than you of both.
When I opened your post I was expecting you to be giving Imelda Marcos a run for her money.

TheOGCCL · 17/02/2024 23:55

I don’t think it’s excessive at all, provided you wear them. I made a determined effort to get rid of some of my shoes as they were just sitting in boxes taking up space. I think a lot of shoes are bought for occasions or because you fall for them but they aren’t that practical or comfortable and they don’t get as much wear as other trusty day to day options, so ultimately most people could live with a lot fewer shoes quite easily. But also we have such different seasons you need footwear for each, would be much easier if we could just wear sandals all year. Same for coats.

Imnotarestaurant · 18/02/2024 00:04

No, that’s not excessive.

I probably have more coats, but a few of those are 10-15 years old.

Definitely have more shoes, but if you consider all the different types- winter boots, pumps, sandals, beach shoes, heels etc., 20 is not really excessive
