my friend is thinking of opening a children's
shop nearby. nothing definite yet, she's just looking into it at the moment, but i hope to god she does. hopefully i'll get a friend's discount too

Basically I thought I'd ask a few questions on here so she knows what people are after.

What colours do you absolutely love/hate? For me i love red, yellow, orange, purple, turquoise, black, white. Hate blue, green, khaki, brown, beige, pink, grey. think they are dulltastic.

What sort of pictures/patterns do you hate/love? diggers, cars, trains, planes, helicopters, pirates, monsters, skeletons, camouflage, grafitti, cutesy animals, butterflies, hearts, flowers, glitter. i don't mind dinosaurs, bugs, lions, spacechips, aliens, astronauts, rockets etc though.

Any materials that you hate? - denim on littlies (under 12 months), nylon, fleece.

Any other comments? Love handknitted items and cord. Hate trackie bottoms, football shirts, trainers (unless being used to play sport) and anything with a collar for toddlers (shirts, polo shirts etc)

Oooh! just in case she does, what area will it be in?

avenanap · 23/03/2008 13:25

I don't want my son to look like a scateboarder. All the clothes I can find for him after he reached the age of 5 are either scateborder or army type clothes. It drives me nuts. Who says a 8 year old doesn't like to wear t shirts with trucks or cars on them?

Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:27

no white collar's or sleeves on realy dark clothes....

tis an absolute PITA for washing......should it be in the dark pile/light pile/whites????

hate hate hate collars and pockets on baby clothes......collars get soggy from dribble, pockets get stuff by older siblings and when baby falls asleep it is all uncomfy with the lumpy pockets!

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 23/03/2008 13:27

I hate dreary stuff for boys - why do they have to have sludge colours - yuck ! I hate logo type things - I love crisp nautical looking things, for boys and girls. I love proper start-rite bar shoes for girls - no patent leather, cute little boots for both..no nylon, agree that denim is a bit nasty on very wee ones...absolutely loathe sporty kit as in nylony football tops, tracksuit bottoms, those horrible trainers ( in fact hate trainers) with side laces, those head bands that baby girls wear...

saltire · 23/03/2008 13:28

I hate the fact that there are about 20 rails of clothes for girls and then 2 for boys. I hate the fact that jeans and trousers with adjustable waists seem to stop after the age of about 8. So tall DS1 who is 10, but needs 12/13 trousers can't get them to fit, as the waist is too big.
I hate the fact that all boys clothes - especially younger boys are military, skulls,or have hundreds of pockets etc.

malfoy · 23/03/2008 13:28

I HATE pink. I am so sick of it.

For babies, I love front fastening vests & babygrows- press studs, not buttons.

For toddlers, nice tracksuit bottom style trousers for both boys & girls -ideal for that potty training stage.

I love young children's clothes in grey & black, navy blue, chocolate brown.

themoon66 · 23/03/2008 13:29

Agree with psycho... white collers, cuffs, hoods on clothes that are dark, so you end up with a horrible sludge gray after washing.

Also hate massive logos or slogans.

themoon66 · 23/03/2008 13:30

What age group is she aiming for? There seems to be nothing in the shops for boys once they reach 11 or 12 or are tall and skinny.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2008 13:33

it will be in the west midlands solo.

she's definitely looking into doing clothes for up to about age 5 but possibly older.

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:34

oh, and to add for babys.....no lacy holey pretty flouncy stuff for girls.

the amount of times my girls got fingers caught in their clothes as tinies, and then I am driving and they are screaming in hidious pain with blue fingers!

and whats with lots of zips too........the only get yanked up too fast and then you catch bits of skin.

not that I have ever done that...........I dress mine with care and attention every time

nappyaddict · 23/03/2008 13:38

I have noticed on here a lot of people say they hate motifs on clothes. Do you hate all motifs or just particular ones like pirates, army, skateboarder, surfer ones etc?

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:43

I like motifs on some clothes.....but it seems that ALL clothes these days have to have something on, and to find anything plain makes the kiddies look rather 'american preppy' IYGWIM.

I like the styles of the clothes with motifs, just sometimes they are a bit too 'in your face'.

equally don;t like the slogan t'shirts for girls.

Kbear · 23/03/2008 13:43

I would like clothes for little girls to fit little girls, ie not hipster-style jeans, teensy waists, and sold by measurements not age so kids don't think they are fat because something in their age doesn't fit. H&M sell by measurements. I would like less rock chick stuff more plain and print and stripey stuff that you can mix and match.

Boys, my DS is 6 and loves t-shirts with Dinosaurs and diggers on but I wouldn't buy skull and crossbones stuff.

Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 13:46

ooh yeah.....another hater for little girls in hipster style bootleg stuff.

I mean......why.......their bodies are just ot the right shape in any way for clothes like that.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2008 13:51

Oh forgot to add that I also hate chinos and hoodies (zip up or pull over the head ones) but love tank tops.

I hate the fact that my 9 year old dd has to wear clothes that are designed for a young woman's body. She is still young but very tall. It is impossible to find a dress for her that does not make her look like she is out to find a boyfriend or worse... (I hesitate to use the word tarty but it sure fits the sizes that fit her...)

Finding a one-piece bathing suit was a nightmare this year. She is too tall for 140 cm but the next size was way too large at the top because it was designed for a bust...

Psychomum5 is right about the hipster thing too. I am tired of looking at bum cracks at dd's school...

Kbear · 23/03/2008 14:02

See my other thread about New Look = I was pleasantly surprised how nice their 915 range is. Nice swing tops with thin straps to wear with cropped leggings or combats that roll up, nice casual beachy kind of stuff (perfect for a holiday to Florida, did I mention my holiday????? .

TheAntiFlounce · 23/03/2008 14:04

I like cord, velvet, satin, gem colours, stripes, spots, cow print, fake fur, applique, chunky knits, felted wool, patchwork cotton, linen, nice buttons, fleece, elasticated waists, packs of seven pairs of socks that are all the same pattern

I do NOT like nylon, sludge colours, collars, rugby shirts, football shirts, jeans on non walkers, button flies, numbers on clothes, deliberate fraying, slutwear for girls, penwear for boys, "I'm a little shit" slogans, "I'm gonna be a hooker" slogans, unnecessary pockets, clothes that shrink, packs of socks with all different patterns

nappyaddict · 23/03/2008 14:05

what is penwear?

OP posts:
TheAntiFlounce · 23/03/2008 14:06

clothes that look like they belong in the state pen

nappyaddict · 23/03/2008 14:07

sorry not sure what you mean - i must be a right dunce!!

when you say jeans on non-walkers - even for late walkers? many children don't walk until they are nearly 2 and occasionally even after they are 2.

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 23/03/2008 14:08

I like kids' clothes that you can just bung in the tumble dryer and not have to iron afterwards...

TheAntiFlounce · 23/03/2008 14:21

I mean on lying down babies really.

lalaa · 23/03/2008 14:27

I like plain stuff - am always looking for reasonably priced good quality tshirts for dd. Hate tops with sparkle on them for girls. Like waterproof warm pretty coats in the winter - quite difficult to find coats that fit all three criteria that are not v.expensive.

champagnesupernova · 23/03/2008 14:31

I like collars - looks so sweet - but prefer them to be the same colour as the top (not something that's going to be a nightmare to wash.)
