my friend is thinking of opening a children's
shop nearby. nothing definite yet, she's just looking into it at the moment, but i hope to god she does. hopefully i'll get a friend's discount too

Basically I thought I'd ask a few questions on here so she knows what people are after.

What colours do you absolutely love/hate? For me i love red, yellow, orange, purple, turquoise, black, white. Hate blue, green, khaki, brown, beige, pink, grey. think they are dulltastic.

What sort of pictures/patterns do you hate/love? diggers, cars, trains, planes, helicopters, pirates, monsters, skeletons, camouflage, grafitti, cutesy animals, butterflies, hearts, flowers, glitter. i don't mind dinosaurs, bugs, lions, spacechips, aliens, astronauts, rockets etc though.

Any materials that you hate? - denim on littlies (under 12 months), nylon, fleece.

Any other comments? Love handknitted items and cord. Hate trackie bottoms, football shirts, trainers (unless being used to play sport) and anything with a collar for toddlers (shirts, polo shirts etc)

I don't want to see my children looking like clowns in bright clashing ott colours ie. orange, purple, red etc. Red trousers should be outlawed. I like tastefull colours olives, chocolate, dove grey, white, cream and navy for boys.

I don't want boys jeans to be horrible old fashioned ones like my father wears, baggy skater styles are more comfortable and more appealing. Shirts should only be worn for school and cords shouldn't be seen on trousers for anyone under 40. A cord dress can be nice for girls.

I don't want my daughters to look like teenagers, but neither do they have to look like girls from the 1940's. My 8 year old wears skinny-ish jeans - perfect she feels that she's trendy and I'm happy that they're not too tight. Also fat-face jeans are great for both girls and boys. Older girls want to be fashionable and this can be done without being inappropriate.

Tracksuits should only be worn playing sport. Slogans are terrible. Logo's can be ok, but you have to be careful.

TheAntiFlounce · 23/03/2008 14:45

I do see your point scanner, but I am talking about clothes for under fives - of course as they get older things should be more fashionable for them, but preschool children should be able to wear preschool colours - my sons have a choice of blue, khaki or grey unless I spend a mint!

JackieNo · 23/03/2008 14:46

(state pen = state penitentiary, I think, ie, prison)

peasoup · 23/03/2008 14:49

I'm interested to know why we have to be careful of logos, Scanner I'm feeling a little nervous as there are some logo clothes lurking around somewhere in our back bedroom i think

MrsBadger · 23/03/2008 18:01

hoods on indoor clothes

dresses with sashes that make a huge knot at the back

tshirts sold as a set with pinafores that don't popper underneath so keep riding up

stuff that doesn't tumble dry

vests with bold patterns that show through tops

OverMyDeadBody · 23/03/2008 18:05

I hate that they are not self-cleaning or stain resistant.

I hate that holes in the knees of jeans don't grow back and 'heal' like skin. How useless is that?!

MrsBadger · 23/03/2008 18:07

oh and pink

but also (conversely) things that clash with pink

and things that ONLY go with the things from the 'outfit' they were bought as part of

MrsBadger · 23/03/2008 18:08

and 'outfits' full stop

mix and match is the way to go

scanner · 23/03/2008 19:01

I guess I think some logos are more tasteful than others, which is purely personal. I like the funky look, which others obviously don't like at all.

When mine were under 5 I stuck to the same principals, dd1 was only seen in pink after about 12 months when I was fed up with people thinking she was a boy. My pet hate with baby clothes was anything with fastenings at the back, poor things are lying on their backs so poppers etc must press down. A relative bough us some lovely french babygrows, but all with poppers in the middle of the back, I just didn't want the babies to wear them.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2008 22:23

MrsB - when you say indoor clothes do you just mean tshirts or for example those sweatshirts with hoods on or zip up ones cos my ds wears those in spring/autumn instead of a coat.

Thanks for info...unfortunately too far away unless she does mail order!!! now there's a thought.
I don't like tarty girls clothes - things that are too high or too low, or baby trousers with pockets, they so don't need pockets. I like little girls to wear little girls dresses. Love hand knits.
All colours in the right context IYSWIM.
I like all kids clothes to be tumble dryer compatible, especially vests and grows.
Hate nylon or polyester.

kitson08 · 23/03/2008 23:01

little girls clothes that are tarty
Lowriders for little girls ffs
I like classic clothes even on boys in nice light colours with no brand written all over it. less is more I think.

bethoo · 23/03/2008 23:06

used to love dungarees on my baby but as he got older nghtmare to have him sit still long enough so i can button everything up!!

but i hate endorsing cartoon characters so avoid them like the plague and there is a make of clothes that are a nightmare as cant get armsin and they shrink in 30 degree wash!! think it begins with a p.

Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 23:06

h I don;t mind 'hoodies', especially as I use them in leiu (sp?) of coats on chilly-but-not-cold-days IYGWIM.

what I do hate however is zips, toggles, pockets, buttons all on one item.

I do love the ability to adjust the wiast's on many pieces of clothing.

Maidamess · 23/03/2008 23:21

I hate it when people dress their toddlers or even worse, babies, in tee shirts with 'The Ramones' or 'the Clash' on the front. Yeah, we all know you were cool once.Leave your children out of it!!

Psychomum5 · 23/03/2008 23:26

just out of interest, (and obviously on topic but not IYGWIM), how do you feel if DH wants to dress their DS's in the football team of choice's strip????

I HATE it, altho I allow it as the girls dance and have lots of ballet stuff so feel it is all very much 'his kids/my kids otherwise.........but......I really really hate it.

not helped now by DS1 foregoing DH's 'team' and choosing another, meanig many mote footy strips........

did I mention I HATE it!!!!!!

MrsBadger · 24/03/2008 08:29

nappyaddict what I relly mean is hoods on baby clothes they end up sleeping in

hoods on fleeces / jumpers etc for out and about fine (and v useful for the chilly run from house to car), just not on tshirts or dresses.

MadameCh0let · 24/03/2008 08:50

Mrs Badger said it for me.

A skirt that ONLY go with one top is not much good.

A good mixture of patterned colourful stuff with neutral stuff.

No slogans.

I would like to be able to buy more oragne and yellow stuff for my son. He's not a blue sort of boy. He needs to be dressed more colourfully imo! Hard to get enough orange and yellow for boys.

LedodgyCheapEasterEggsAreASin · 24/03/2008 09:14

I like the boot cut/flared jeans on my dd who's nearly 5. She has very long thin legs and a tiny waist.I usually get the gap long and lean style which aren't hipsters but they have a boot cut leg or a flared leg my dd suits these and normal jeans without a boot leg or flare look daft on her shape. I wouldn't buy her low rise though that is a bit strange.

I too would like more colours for boys other than blue and beige etc and on the same line More bright plain colours for girls not just pink or flowers but not gareish (sp?)either like Oililly which I hate. I also hate that thing that Next seem to do which is ruin a perfectly nice stripey top by having a flower print over the stripes just leave the stripes the flower has no place!

I also hate branded stuff I will buy pajamas with Thomas the Tank on etc but not normal clothes.

Lizzzombie · 24/03/2008 09:23

I hate the fact that some childrens clothes are made from nasty synthetic materials. Why would anyone buy a nylon nightie for their daughter in this day and age? I used wear them in the 1970.

MrsBadger · 24/03/2008 09:30

nightwear is tricky

there are flammability regs which cotton doesn;t meet unless specially coated
hence the difficulty of finding decent cotton nighties for girls

Jellyjuice · 24/03/2008 09:53

I hate skull and crossbones on boys clothes - and there are so many around at the minute! Adjustable waists are excellent, belts are a pain.

She should think about sizing too, I once looked for pyjamas for my 4 year old DS and struggled to find age 4-5, they seemed to jump from 3-4 (too small) to 5-6 (too big)and he was right in between!

BoysOnToast · 24/03/2008 10:00

i love the boys to be comfy. so jersey , jersey and more jersey (they have lots of trackies, and the 2yo has a few almost leggingy things).
the 3 adn 4yos wear a uniforn at school/nursery (eh?? looks cute tho) so we are comfy all rest of time...

like bright colours and stripes and pics/logos that arent too 'i am a boy. ug' iyswim (why cant boys like owls and rainbows and treees and stuff, its all tractors and diggers??) not that im militant about it and we have fair share of diggers/trains/tractors/power smeggin rangers...lol

i like putting little tank top jumpers on them - not too mnay sleeves to get wet, and keep em warm and comfy. plus they look cute.

BoysOnToast · 24/03/2008 10:01

nightwear should always be jersey - the cotton 'proper' pjs with the buttons etc only look good ironed and who the hell can be arsed to iron a 3yos pjs??

BoysOnToast · 24/03/2008 10:06

i love the adjustable waist on boys ttrousers - but having 3 boys, ive noticed that the rubber in the elastic does not seem to age well and they stop being adjustsble when handed down (endlessly!)
notthat theres much you can do about that, but just thought id mention it!
