Mine is that often when trousers are described as 'high-waisted', they are not at all high waisted on me. They just aren't hipsters!

I feel like it's fairly easy to find decent basics if you know where to look - many of the brands mentioned here do good t-shirts, jeans, wool/cotton trousers and sweatshirts plus wool jumpers, but whenever I look for more "exciting" items like a dress for work, or a "going-out" top, the quality drops and i am back to wading through a sea of thin, flimsy polyester. And yes, those are sold in the upper-end high street stores like Reiss and Whistles. I popped into a Hobbs a few days ago every outfit looked like it was designed to be worn at a local authority job interview (nothing against LA jobs, I used to have one)

NonPlayerCharacter · 02/02/2024 13:40

Hobbs has gone down the pan.

I agree, and in unexpected places. Bon Marche are not exactly fashion forward but their T shirts are thick cotton. My white Uniqlo T-shirt is the thickest T-shirt I own. It's such a pity that the other colours they do are either wishy washy or sludgy, none of which suit me.

This brings me to my other bugbear. I often see something I really like, but it is only available in brown, olive green or beige. I want red, gree and blue, not sludge.

That there are too many pairs of high waisted jeans / trousers out there. Uncomfortable and unflattering on those of us with long legs and short bodies.

This. I LOATHE high-waisted trousers.

Thank goodness for the high waisted trousers

The low rise were so uncomfortable and not high enough.

Kalevala · 02/02/2024 16:34

Another dead end. I filtered by short sleeve cotton then there were none in a round neck.

zaxxon · 02/02/2024 16:35

Thanks @moggerhanger , I'll give those a try!

ImInACage · 02/02/2024 16:46

Shoulder seams. I'm tired of every women's top having the shoulder seams midway down the arm. It makes the whole cut unflattering as there is no shape from side to halfway down the sleeve, just a big flappy bit of fabric. What happened to having the shoulder seams at the edge of the actual shoulders?

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 02/02/2024 17:00

Cargo everything including cargo maxi skirts and cargo dresses. See also parachute trousers, parachute skirts and parachute dresses. Why? I don’t ever do anything that involves shipping cargo and am not about to jump out of a plane.

I have broad, square shoulders and those make me look soooo sloppy. Do they look good on others, maybe very slim types 🤔

Even 10 years ago polyester was commonplace. Not all suits in Hobbs would have been wool then- just because yours was doesn't mean that all were. You can still get a wool suit at Hobbs- yes, they are expensive because wool is a premium fabric and has been for decades now. Suits come in a range of fabrics to suit different needs- summer suits probably won't be wool- they will be lighter fabrics, polyester makes them easy to care for so there will be a market for trousers that don't need dry cleaning like wool does. I still find Hobbs great quality- natural fabric doesn't equal good quality. River island was never in the realms of hobbs, even back in the day.

Like a saddo I checked Hobbs' website at that time (spring 2011) using the internet archive, and yes, of course there was polyester, but the number of pure wool suits was much higher. The prices were slightly higher compared to today taking inflation into account, but not massively. I don't have as much against polyester as some posters, and it definitely has its place, but it's just not true that natural fabrics are as easy to find as they were in decades past. Not just that, but it's the glorifying of "contains wool"/"cotton blend" etc. etc. which is faintly insulting, as though it's a massive luxury to pay more for something not as good as you could have got from the same shop a few years ago.

I don't think anyone's saying they expect top quality from lower end brands - just that quality has declined across the board, apart from very high-end places. I can see this in my own wardrobe - I have things from cheap shops that were bought years ago and have been worn and washed loads of times and are still in good condition, whereas newer things from the same shops have deteriorated faster in terms of both washing poorly and sloppy construction, like buttons not being sewn on firmly or hems coming down.

A couple of examples - last summer I bought 2 dresses, a dress for a party from Warehouse and a work dress from Oasis, both companies from whom I've bought loads over the years and have many older garments in good condition. Both dresses were at the more expensive end of what those shops were offering. The Warehouse dress looked great on the website - brightly coloured chiffon given shape by a belt. In real life, the fabric didn't hang as well, the hems and stitching were rubbish, and the "belt" was just made from the dress fabric with no interfacing, so it creased and folded over itself - totally unfit for purpose and spoiling the look of the dress. The buckle felt like it was going to break at any minute, the belt holes were badly edged, and there was no way of securing the loose end so I had to hide a safety pin in it. The Oasis work dress again looked nice online - a nice pattern and a sturdy-looking fabric. In real life, the fabric was terrible - too stretchy, not sturdy at all, and you could tell it would get raggedy and fuzzy from washing. I handwashed it and it still got raggedy and fuzzy, so I soon didn't feel I could wear it to work.

I wasn't expecting either of these to be future heirlooms, just nice-looking dresses that would fulfil their function.

Sorry, this is really long, but I think it's odd to deny what so many people are saying about the decline in quality. We're not imagining it. It's also fine not to like the current widely available fashion trends, and not to be happy about having to spend loads of money to get something decent, in interesting colours, in nice fabrics, and so on, when that wasn't the case relatively recently.

stringbean · 02/02/2024 18:17

My gripe - apart from most shops not stocking shoes bigger than a size 41 and the plethora of man-made fabrics everywhere - is the volume of stuff in shops and on websites. I had a look at the Boden sale and there were 718 dresses. Who needs that kind of choice?? I don't want to/have time to wade through that many. Give me a choice of 10 or 15 well-made dresses in different styles and decent fabric and I'm far more likely to find something suitable. The problem with too many choices is that you are always left thinking there's something better out there and you've likely made the wrong choice. Which probably leads you to make another purchase. And another....

Alongside the above is the increasing number of 'drops' every shop now has to have each season. Just give me one season's worth of decent quality items that stay in the shop for months - please!!!: I can have a think about it, save up for something that's worth paying extra for, and be genuinely happy with a purchase, rather then be rushed into a poor decision because it will sell out or disappear to make way for the next 'drop'.

All the joy has been taken out of shopping. It's like TV - 300 channels and nothing to watch. Right, rant over!

Agree! I cba to look through 700 dresses and set umpteen filters to try to find stuff.

Ballroom pink - which shops are the elegant shoes in please?

Brands like Sezane, Bobbies, Anonymous, Russell & Bromley etc. all do lovely low/mid-heeled summer shoes/sandals that aren't sparkly/occasionwear, more shoes you could wear for work. But so expensive! Boden also I guess.

Clarks often a reasonable option price-wise but last year all their stuff was not quite right. 10-15 years ago M&S used to be a reasonably-priced work shoe go-to but now all their stuff looks so plasticy and cheap.

Basically I want the sort of shoes sold by the first list of brands, but for under £100 😂I love Birkenstocks and DMs but they don't work for my reasonably formal London office environment.

TheOGCCL · 02/02/2024 18:40

Just on polyester, I don't really sweat, always very cold. I use minimal natural deodorant. Natural fabrics I could wear for days, they just don't smell after being worn. But as soon as I wear polyester, I smell by lunchtime.

ballroompink · 02/02/2024 18:44

Now I have moaned, I have realised that there are actually quite a few examples of the shoes I'm looking for in the sales right now, therefore within budget.

Same, cotton t-shirts I will wear up to three days in winter but I've had to put polyester fleece pyjamas in the bottom drawer to get rid of as they smell so quickly.

Kalevala · 02/02/2024 18:52

I don't wear my work supplied uniform fleece jacket either (optional) as it's just so sweaty when I'm not even hot, it doesn't breathe.

MyFirstLittlePony · 02/02/2024 18:55

So many brands I used to like and could rely on…

not now

Hush 10-15 years ago was great, good quality, nice natural fabrics. Now it’s expensive and crappy thin shapeless polyester

even the same item, their harem pants, one from 7 years ago still going strong, one from last year thinner and baggier and sadder

i think they think we won’t notice….

Kalevala · 02/02/2024 19:06

Can anyone recommend 100% cotton crew neck t-shirts, full length, available in a range of strong or natural colours? I mostly like the purple-blue-green spectrum and some neutrals like oat and chocolate.

I never look on their website. I go into the shop. Website stock is often different from shop stock.

Usually basics in particular are available online though, I don't think I'd risk a trip to the city with associated costs on the chance that's not true for this store.

I find this too - especially what I call my PE kit (running tshirts etc). It absolutely stinks after use and I need to wash it with antibac stuff. But exercising in cotton is a miserable experience, so I put up with the stinky kit.

Women's fit or unisex? I swear by Fruit Of The Loom or Gildan for unisex.

Women's, I have some men's as I find those much easier to find colours I like but some women's fit would be good.
