Mine is that often when trousers are described as 'high-waisted', they are not at all high waisted on me. They just aren't hipsters!

Forgot to say, I'm also sick of waists being too high (and I'm short waisted!), and things being too long. I'm 5'6 so not tiny and I have problems with jeans being too long, and sometimes sleeves.

With all the comments on synthetics here, may l add that after processing, which is often environmentally damaging, cotton itself is on a long synthetic slope. Don’t kid yourselves about it being oh so natural; it isn’t.

Maybe not, but it's far more comfortable to wear and doesn't make me feel hot and sweaty! I do try to buy organic cotton, but will wear any in preference to the other ghastly fabrics.

StoneTheCrone · 01/02/2024 21:35

I agree with almost everything posted above.

The sea of beige and black - i like beige but enough now - I'd like some colour.

I'm also sick of frills, high necks, massive sleeves and florals.

Worse than this though is the sea of polyester. I dont mind Viscose as it can be dry cleaned and its breathable but polyester can fuck right off.

The problem is though that a lot of people put up with it because its cheap and they want something new to wear each week.

I also think clothing is a feminist issue. Men dont have to wade through a sea of shit fabric do they? They can still get tailored, nicely coloured cotton, wool and linen clothes that are finished and cut well. No massive sleeves or cut-outs for them! 🤔

Don't know where you are all shopping that is drab and beige because there's lots of colour in the shops I like- seeing lots of green, pink, bright blue etc. I've just bought this jumper from Oliver Bonas. https://www.oliverbonas.com/fashion/wave-stripe-blue-knitted-jumper-359428?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping%20UK&utm_term=39-250-702-100063&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzendj_CKhAMVOpmDBx1SMwXlEAQYASABEgL_WfD_BwE#selection.color=15
and this from Sezane
https://www.sezane.com/en/product/jesse-blouse/ecru-green#size-6

Agreed. I'm puzzled where all these terrible clothes are.

According to my husband men's clothes are absolutely awful compared to women's. There's nowhere near the same choice; clothes are mainly boring and high street is very poor quality.

Bearpawk · 01/02/2024 21:54

The shit quality.
Lost track of the amount of stuff that I returned to Zara for it falling apart. And many things advertised as wool (looking at
You, H&M) are only 4-8% wool now!

I see previous comments about poor hems and raise you: raw hems. I saw this linen shirt in Mango https://shop.mango.com/gb/women/shirts-shirts/multi-coloured-striped-linen-shirt_57040383.html and I like the colours and the stripe, but what's with the unfinished hems? It looks dreadful, like it's old and fraying. I'd have to get those hemmed up and then I think it would likely be too short - not that I know for certain, since they didn't bother to provide a measurement for length of item.

(Also it's terribly styled on the model - what an awful idea to have her stand so tilted to one side and showing off her bra.)

@FluffyFanny I was thinking excatly the same thing. There's certainly no shortage of wool jumpers out there. I got 2 from uniqlo.

I often buy men's. The colours are better with a wider selection available and the clothes are better quality.

FluffyFanny · 01/02/2024 22:24

I don't get all the hate for synthetic fabric. I'm sure it's a myth that polyester is not breathable- all the hi-tech breathable sports clothing- yoga wear, running tops, raincoats, fleece tops etc. are all polyester. I love cotton clothing, but I also love a snuggly fleecy top, love my opaque tights, love my waterproof coat from sea salt, love my microfibre underwear that is smooth and seam free,

I never seem to have a problem with sweating in polyester- and it's not always a cheap fabric- it varies massively! Good quality polyester hangs well, washes well, doesn't crease, doesn't fade or shrink, and it can look expensive.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/02/2024 22:26

Some polyester is engineered to be breathable in sportswear. Polyester dress fabric isn’t engineered.

I can’t wear it. It’s essentially plastic rods and makes me itch like crazy.

I find Uniqlo knitwear very thin and 'pouchy' in the stomach area. A bit like M&S.

The Fold- much beloved of MN when asked to suggest smart work wear.

Apart from a couple of silk dresses, all these some synthetic fibres.

This thread seems to be full of people shopping in cheap shops and complaining they can't find any quality. You get what you pay for.

You are not going to find high quality in Mango, Primark, H&M, Zara, New Look, Next, Matalan or River Island. Those sorts of shops have made mass market value their number one priority and to keep costs low they use cheaper fabrics.

The cost of materials has risen alongside everything else, so shops that have maintained their quality, now seem very expensive in comparison to the general highstreet- the likes of Jigsaw, Hobbs, LK Bennett, Me and Em, Sezane etc.

Synthetic fabric does not always equal cheap- I would prefer a good quality synthetic over a cheap cotton or viscose. I have had cotton clothing from low end shops that just twist and shrink and become unwearable after one wash.

Clotheswoe · 01/02/2024 22:43

this is interesting. I didn't know this. Do you have any link to further info about this?

Plus I hate the feel of polyester, and won't wear it for that reason alone.

That there are too many pairs of high waisted jeans / trousers out there. Uncomfortable and unflattering on those of us with long legs and short bodies.

This. I LOATHE high-waisted trousers.

Actually we don't all shop in cheap shops, and there isn't much difference in the stocked goods in higher end retailers. There's still too much polyester/viscose and I don't like wearing it - been there, done that, never again.
