Do you keep using your makeup past the expiry date?

Was hearing some horror stories about using old eye makeup and eye infection. I don't use a lot of makeup so have eyeshadows and liners that belong to the pre-covid era. Powders and concealers that are quite a few years old. Am trying to replace mascara every six or so months but that's about it. How does everyone else do it? Do you really get rid of your makeup and keep track of the use by dates?

I only bin things that are not going to ever be used again or have gone off. Mascara tends to smell strange very quickly, so get binned after a few uses because I hardly ever use it.

I used to blithely say "god yes!" but in my late 40s developed awful dry eye. The optician was extremely stern about make up hygiene. At the very least pencils get sharpener regularly, brushes get washed, and eye shadows sprayed with an ethanol solution. And I'm scrupulous about taking every last scrap off, and wearing much less. I wish I'd realised years ago.

Eyelashes are there to keep dust and other things out of your eyes but we coat them with gunk to make ourselves look more attractive.

I can, and do, sanitize my make up (I just don’t use it up fast enough, so I have to, due to health issues).

This is the guide I use:
https://www.byrdie.com/how-to-sanitize-makeup-4688798

But it also doesn’t contain all tips (how to sanitize a pencil, what to do if a cream product has already had fingers in it), so this list covers the extras:
https://www.spectrumcollections.com/blogs/the-latest/mua#!

It basically comes down to isopropyl alcohol 70% and lots of it.

Last month I finished up a product that still had its price tag on the bottom. In Deutschmarks. So yeh, can't say I'm a stickler for dates (in fairness though, it was long before any best before dates were printed on things either!)

It would help if there was a space to write the date you bought it. I put on a lip balm today and I suspect it’s years old.

I have a Geminesse powder eye shadow palette that my mother bought me for Christmas 1980! I don't wear eyeshadow often and I still use it!!

Apart from that I wear: foundation, concealer, blusher, highlighter, Mascara, lipstick every day. I use it all and replace. I have 5 lipsticks on the go at the moment. They sometimes last for 4/5 years but I use them all up! Eyeliner pencils, I tend to lose or break.

Most of us do.

I still have a (hideous) eye shadow duo pot from 1976; kept it as a souvenir from New York and if it wasn't such a dayglo green I reckon it'd be fine😂.
I do bin liquid make-up when it gets a bit rancid.....

If I tossed every product when it ‘expired,’ I’d have to remortgage the house. Besides, it’s not yoghurt – a bit of old mascara won’t kill me (I hope!). If it looks good and doesn’t smell like a chemistry experiment gone wrong, it’s staying.
