Do you keep using your makeup past the expiry date?

Was hearing some horror stories about using old eye makeup and eye infection. I don't use a lot of makeup so have eyeshadows and liners that belong to the pre-covid era. Powders and concealers that are quite a few years old. Am trying to replace mascara every six or so months but that's about it. How does everyone else do it? Do you really get rid of your makeup and keep track of the use by dates?

@BusterGonad I've just been to find it and alas, it seems that I did get rid of my "Firebird" lipstick after all. I did, however, find a bottle of the Body Shop's White Musk perfume, which is of a similar vintage - photo attached!

I've also got an old bottle of Body Shop Eau de Toilette. Can't even remember what it's called as it's deep in a cupboard somewhere (naranja?) and there's only a little bit left. Sadly they discontinued it 😢

ThePoshUns · 30/01/2024 19:53

Make up has expiry dates? Every day is a school day.

Baldieheid · 30/01/2024 19:53

Only if things went or smelled rancid.

Mascara goes dry and flaky after 6, 7 months anyway. Everything else hangs about for decades. Never had a problem telling if something was no good. Gel eyeliner dries out but pencil goes on and on..

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/01/2024 20:12

I wouldn't use old mascara but I store my make up carefully so don't take any notice of dates unless the product is clearly suffering for it. I did recently wonder why my trusty pot of Sudocrem didn't seem so effective and realised it expired in 2018 😬. I've replaced it obviously. I have chucked lipsticks that start to smell or taste off. However I love make up so it usually gets used before that!

Rattai · 30/01/2024 20:47

Yes i would consider creams wet but strangely not pencils ( i know they can be soft but you can always sharpen them)

Garlicnaan · 30/01/2024 20:56

Ignore it completely. I only chuck stuff out of it starts to smell weird. Even my mascaras are years old. They usually last about 18 months but I have some heavier ones I only use occasionally which I've had for much longer.

TippiHedrin · 30/01/2024 21:00

Chuck mascara (and eyeliners where the brush touches your eye) every 3-4 months without fail. Chuck lipsticks, cream blush etc whenever they start to smell of crayons but in practice this can be 7-10 years. Just threw some out that I bought when I was pregnant in 2016. Powder products keep indefinitely, as long as you clean your brushes!

I also have a nostalgia shoebox of no longer usable but sentimental items (e.g. my first Chanel lipstick from 1990s) but that is a bit silly really

BurbageBrook · 30/01/2024 21:03

I think the 'use by' dates on make up are just a marketing ploy. I keep it until it runs out or dries up.

321user123 · 30/01/2024 21:09

What’s an expiry date? 🤔🤔😂😂

ok, jokes apart…. No, I do not replace them. Tbh even mascaras I throw them out when they run out..

MrsMitford3 · 30/01/2024 21:09

I used to use Touch Eclat and remember being on holiday in florida (relevant because I wondered if it was the heat) and it smelled rancid so I tossed it but I def have things in make up bag that are 20 years old...

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 30/01/2024 21:12

Mascara I use tonnes anyway, so that gets replaced about every six months.

I wear the same thing all the time so it all gets it's turn to be replaced.

The only thing I've noticed going off is moisturizers, such as body lotion, it can smell a bit rancid if it's too old.

Otherwise, keep it all going!

Powder products last forever imo, unless there's obvious build up or mould. Eye liners, pencil type can be sharped fresh, dip types probably need replacing more often. Mascara is best to replace often (I don't, maybe every year). Lipstick until it looks, smells or taste funny. Ime Mac ones go off faster than most. I've never had to bin eyeshadows. Foundations can separate or start to smell funny, or cause skin reactions. Generally you'd know if make up was off.

I’m surprised your Mac ones don’t last..?
My oldest Mac lipsticks are around 8yrs old and they’re just like the brand new ones 🤷🏼‍♀️

I also got some single eyeshadows from Mac and if I had to guess they’re at least 10yrs old.. also in perfect condition…

Wishitsnows · 30/01/2024 21:17

No, I’m not falling for that bollocks that make up has an expiry date!

mumgodloveher · 30/01/2024 21:18

Recently used a CC cream that was just over 2 years old, hadn't used it for a couple of months prior to that. I noticed it didn't have its usual pleasant scent when I put it on, didn't think more about it. Next morning my face was burning and raised bright red rash all over, took a couple of days to go down.

Maybe I'm over sensitive but they started tasting a bit rank. I'm not keen on the vanila fragrance anyway.

That’s so interesting..
never noticed anything like that.. I guess I should count myself lucky! ✌️

DappledThings · 30/01/2024 21:31

I only wear make-up about twice a year. I bought some for my wedding 12.5 years ago and still have it. Plenty left so still using it.

AndyPandyismyhero · 30/01/2024 21:40

New mascara every eight weeks or so and new eye shadow three or four times a year. I work in a school and unfortunately it is easy to pick up eye infections from the children. I also wash my brushes every other day to try to minimise the chance of infection.

I've found that wiping them down after using them with a alcohol wipe keeps them fresh. I know I sound mad, but I don't wear them often as they are bright and more of a 'going out' lipstick, think Ruby Woo etc. Also they went off when I was living in South East Asia so very humid and hot. The perfect breeding ground for mould etc. My everyday lipsticks I'm obviously not wiping down! 😂😂😂

Yes, clean brushes make a huge difference.

Funnily enough you don’t sound mad at all!

Those shades are exactly the ones I’ve had for 8yrs 🤣 as I wear it like once a year tops lol.

I do spray them with alcohol every now and then but not often.. maybe I should consider that! (More often).

I went to South Asia with some of my daily Macs for 6 wks and they barely stood up as were so melty 😂🫣 - think your hardest mattes being extremely smooth like a lipgloss LOL

BusterGonad · 31/01/2024 00:13

I only have 3 Macs now, Ruby Woo, Rebel and Girl About Town. My daily lipsticks are L'Oréal, the bullet ones in the gold tube. I adore them and they smell just like Lancome lipsticks, too me anyway. I also have some lovely Lancomes that I wipe down, as once again they are dark shades and reds so I want to keep them good for as long as possible, especially as they're £££. Of I'm not using a certain foundation I'll store it in the fridge, so my winter shades are in there now as I'm quite tanned at the moment. I'm not in the UK. I did have some lovely Revlon cream eyeshadow in a glass jar, they went hard. So sad.

LoraPiano · 31/01/2024 11:15

Thanks all, you put my mind at ease!

Foundations can go orangey if they're opened too long - I've learned the hard way not to save any expensive foundation 'for best'. Mascara gets chucked out once it starts getting clumpy, and eyeshadow crayons can dry out and break off, so they get chucked after a bit too.

I've got loads of powder eyeshadows, mainly MAC pots, that are years old, though. And blushers seem to go on for EVER.
